Chance of a cup QF to at least give us some cheer this season. Hopefully we put a full(ish) strength team out for this.

Indeed. Not only to maximise our chances of progressing but to hopefully give our 'first choice' 11 the chance for a moral boosting gelling session. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Russ makes at least 5 changes from yesterday's starting 11....

P.s. I had assumed Russ's touchline ban would be for the next league game, but I read earlier that it will be for this match.

With Palace's win vs Spurs this afternoon as good as confirming our relegation we genuinely should start to focus on this competition,  make something of the season and give the fans something to cheer.

There's something gloriously unglamorous about this fixture , a nice antidote for those of us disillusioned by the Premier League. Whole Kingsland stand closed, plenty of seats left in Chapel and Northam , about 800 away fans tucked away in the corner, lovely stuff.

I get the impression Martin isn't that fussed about the cup so he's probably not too fussed sitting it out.

I hope we go pretty strong too - playing Tuesday means we’ve plenty of time to recover.

Think it’s standard to rotate keepers which I’m fine with. Don’t think we should risk anyone with a knock or returning so thats Suga and Smallbone.  I’d be tempted to rest the young kids more than anyone, as much as a mental break than a physical one. And if Lallana can’t play every game, save him for the league. I mean, we’re down anyway but we can pretend.

McCarthy

KWP Stephens Bednarek Taylor

Aribo Downes Lesley

ArmA Archer Sulemana or Cornet

SAA and Taul Paul among the subs.

Going to Saints U21 v Leipzig at Eastleigh fc instead as the trains are just useless. LCFC game on way hone bus took 1 hour to get from soton train station to Bedford place/London Rd. Let's hope Saints beat Stoke and don't do another Grimsby! I suspect it will be a changed side but at least not too many U21s as they will be at Eastleigh fc!!

Hadnt realised that's on the same evening. Tough opponent for u21s, could limit the opportunities for the youngsters to be involved in the first team squad for Stoke.

Last four meetings at St Mary's

April 2024 - Saints 0v1 Stoke

March 2018 - Saints 0v0 Stoke

May 2017 - Saints 0v1 Stoke

Nov 2015 - Saints 0v1 Stoke

Have we tried scoring a goal to see if it helps?

Dunno?

Our offensive league stats say we have had 9.6 shots on goal with 3.6 shots on target (a touch generous in my opinion) 😁

Our offensive cup stats say we have had 12 shots on goal with 6 shots on target (probably correct) 😃

In summary, Just **cking pull your fingers out ya ***tards and win a game for once 😇

No confidence that we’ll win this. Russ will put out a significantly changed side of strangers who will not know their roles. Stoke on the other hand will be the polar opposite and will score goals. Hopefully with Russ in the stands the players will just do their own thing and actually win a game of football.

Martin: "We'll play the strongest team we have available. I think it's the most important game we've had this season."

“Definitely won't be 11 changes. There will be some, I think, such is the nature of it and we have two big games after that. But this is the most important one, so we'll play the team that we feel is the most ready to win.”

I don't want to rag on him for absolutely everything, but in what world is an EFL Cup last 16 game against Stoke's reserves more important than the Everton and Wolves games?

When it's already accepted that relegation is a near certainty so might as well have some fun in the cup. That world

I'm pretty excited at seeing Stephen's playing in the hole behind BBD.

The Carabao Cup quarter-final draw will take place live on Sky Sports following Spurs v Man City on Wednesday evening. The ball numbers are finalised on Wednesday morning.

All last eight ties will be played during the week commencing Monday, December 16. That'll be a few days after Saints face Spurs at 7pm on a Sunday! Stoke City to beat first.

This is just the normal presser bullshit. "The team we feel is most ready to win" is like saying there will be changes. There are so many other things he does wrong, this is not one of them, in my opinion.

You would hope it would be the Thursday as we are playing very late on the Sunday and again Sunday afternoon, but I've given up expecting common sense or fairness from the administrators.

It’s not that I was querying, it was the bit about the Stoke game being a bigger game than Everton or Wolves.

Still presser bs in my opinion... "the next game is allways the most important"

Sorry, not looking for an argument, guess I just can't take anyhing said in these serious when the real problem is what happens in training and on matchdays...

Sorry to be critical. But it's madness to not have more Stephens in there.

On the contrary, depending on the FA Cup draw this is quite possibly our last chance of seeing a home win this season.

Now let that sink in!

Thank, that makes me feel better 🙂

I shall miss the Chelsea and Tottenham games in December because I’m going somewhere warmer. I used to do everything possible to make sure I went to home games but I’ve lost a lot of interest in going since this way of walking football has taken over.

Unthinkable to lose this. OK, its only the Carabao Cup, but for me it is great to have a good run in any cup and it gives confidence and fringe players some pitch time. If he takes it seriously, then we should win, but it is by no means certain as we all know what Saints are like with ties like this.

Going for an edgy 1-0 win.

What does this term 'being brave' even mean? I heard it a dozen times on the Radio Solent broadcast last Saturday.
To me, its one of the annoying expressions that have crept in to the modern game

Yep! It appears to mean recycling the ball around the back line again as nobody wants to take responsibility and lose possession with a difficult forward pass.

HTH!
