BARCELONASAINT
Commonwealth heads of government are preparing to defy the United Kingdom and agree plans to examine reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, the BBC has learned. Downing Street insists the issue is not on the agenda for the summit of 56 Commonwealth countries, which begins in the Pacific island nation of Samoa on Friday. But diplomatic sources said officials were negotiating an agreement to conduct further research and begin a “meaningful conversation” about an issue which could potentially leave the UK owing billions of pounds in reparations. Ok, I know this is a sensitive subject for many and i will make it clear straight away that what happened in the past was wrong then and it's wrong now. However these events did not happen during our lifetimes and no one alive now should have to pay for what happened well over a hundred years ago and more. Where do we stop?? Should we go after the Denmark, Sweden and Norway for the Vikings invading our lands and taking slaves? Do we go after the Italians for invading our lands as part of the Roman Empire and taking slaves? (what did the Romans ever do for us?) No one alive should be apologising for historical events of the past. By all means acknowledge that these things were wrong by our human standards of today but apologise, NO. Those alive today have nothing to apologise about.

hypochondriac
Not even worth discussing really. It isn't going to happen (although as usual the big brained genius David Lammy said something years ago not considering that it would come back to bite him if he ever fluked his way into power.) and it's a waste of time getting angry about a fantasy. Lighthouse
Another case of people choosing the exact interpretation of the exact moment in history which they feel they’re the victim of. As has been pointed out we can reasonably demand reparations from many European nations, not to mention the Catholic Church, so where does it all end? If we can trace homosapiens back to east Africa, are they ultimately responsible for the whole worlds colonialism?

Also, whilst some Britons were making money from the transatlantic trade, it was Africans who were capturing and selling the slaves. Hows that going to work
The Kraken
I always find apologies for these sort of things to be a bit pointless. Maybe apologising "on behalf of the Government" goes somewhere towards acknowledging a wrong, but it's a bit meaningless in terms of being a personal apology if it was generations away. Sunak had it right when he ruled out reparations. So did Starmer when he repeated that line. It would be nonsense to even consider it.

badgerx16
Probably 90% of the country is still owned by descendants of the Norman invaders. On behalf on my Anglo-Saxon forebears I demand that our land is returned to us, so that we can then pass it back to our Celtic ancestors from whom the Saxons / Angles / Danes / Jutes stole it.

Gloucester Saint
You’d also have to deduct all of the tens of billions international aid and overseas R&D. A non-starter. More likely to be helping the more stable Commonwealth countries with better access to re-financing facilities.
badgerx16
In one episode of "Who Do You Think You Are ?", Ainsley Harriot went tracing his lineage back to the plantation where one of his ancestors was a slave, only to find another was the plantation owner. I suppose he could pay himself.

The argument seems to be that we need to pay reparations because the slave trade was not done on such an industrial scale before and that that's our fault. Completely insane of course. It’s unworkable even if someone did support it - where would you start and draw distinctions? It’s confected for domestic audiences to keep some leaders and Heads of State in power.
