Sounds great. Now if we could just sell a few players we could make it even okayer ready for summer.

Probably right, no point signing anyone as anyone that can make a difference will be very expensive. Were best off trying to send Cornet and Leslie back, trying to flog the likes of Bella-Kotchap, Sulemana and anyone else we can and bring in a couple of loans. Keep our powder dry for the summer when we sell anyone half decent as well

Would it be too much to ask to recruit players who look and are fit and with body parts all in the right proportions? I just feel we have strayed away from this basic requirement for too many of our acquisitions in recent Windows.

Deadline dates 1st January to 3rd February so plenty of time to get rid of dross and bring in a load of new blood, at reasonable cost and ready for next year's assault on promotion!!
I hope!!

You can have players who look fit OR are fit OR who have proportioned body parts. Might as well ask for the Moon on a stick to expect more than that. 🙂

So... Anyone know if Juric has any 'favourite' players that tend to follow him from club to club? i.e. any realistic potential loan options in January that we could link to him?

I’m assuming if we unload cornet/lesley we can reuse those premier league loan spots?

I still think there is something in Les - I'd be keen to see what / how he would do in a different system.

10 days to impress I guess.

Some big powerful athletes who can run, jump, tackle and get about the pitch would be a start - if they can play a bit of football as well even better 🙂

Seemingly it'll be a defender who suits his style of play but isn't actually an upgrade on what we have to slot in with James Bree and Nathan Wood

Juric is only here six months and we're going down anyway so we need to be careful so we should only be giving him a transfer fund of maybe £75 million or so

Kevin Danso being looked at.

Onuachu offered 3yr deal at Besiktas.

It's peak Saints that we're actively trying to offload the player that's come in and caused problems for the opposition and actually looked like he gives a shit, rather than the chancers who have proven themselves incapable of performing at this level over a couple of years.

While at Torino he signed midfielder Ivan Ilić from Hellas Verona.  He didn't follow him to Roma though.

Defensive midfielder. Maybe the big Les replacement in January?

Good player. He'll do. Serbian too, so Dragan will approve...  Get him on the bus 🚍:)

I will be upset if we let Tall Paul go, he gives me hope and great entertainment. As you say it will be typical blinkered Saints to let someone who could score 5-10 goals between now and the end of the season

I had a thought recently ( few and far between I know) but along the lines of if ABK wants to continue his career sooner or later he’s going to have to knuckle down, get rid of the petulant little boy act and start playing football. Given that he has been selected for various stages of the German national team there must be a footballer there somewhere.

Instead of getting rid of him I wonder if someone like Juric could be the manager to resurrect his career, to get him playing to the standard he once was capable of. To my way of thinking it could only benefit us if that were the case.

Big as ABK is I think if Juric told him he's got to get back out there and start working to show he's worth a place in the team he wouldn't argue 🙂

What's the situation with Bella Kotcha?
Is he actually training?
Presume he still gets his £60k ish a week wages?

Nice work if you can get it.

A reminder that on Friday 26 July 2024 the club made the following announcement:

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that it has agreed personal terms with two current São Paulo players; Welington and Juan.

Both players have signed pre-contract agreements with Southampton that will see them join up with the club in January, when their current contracts with the Brazilian Série A side expire.

Welington is a 23-year-old left-back who has already made 150 appearances for São Paulo, including victories in the Copa do Brazil final in 2023 and the Supercopa do Brazil final in 2024. He has also represented Brazil at Under 20 and Under 23 level.

Juan is a 22-year-old forward who has scored eight goals in 80 appearances for São Paulo and has also represented Brazil at Under 19 level.

Here's hoping that they are more of a Mateus Fernandes type of signing than some of the other questionable SR acquisitions ...

Note that Welington spells his name with only one 'L' - presumably to avoid confusion with the Wimbledon and Waterloo versions

So our left back options including those on loan:

  • Taylor
  • Manning
  • KWP
  • Larios
  • Welington
  • Shoehorn
  • Bree
  • Wee Man

Surely KWP will be sold next month to try to recoup some funds

I can't see anyone shifting Manning from left back. Juan looks like he's bringing the firepower we've needed for so long from a proven striker. Oh, wait.....

He does look prolific!

A 1 in ten ratio suggests if he over performs he might score 2 goals before the end of the season

Clearly he was sporting a Carlos Valderama hairdo and the gaffer had chewed him out. The swim hat was an aerodynamic compromise 😁

I'll be gutted if we don't see the swim hat discussed on Match of the Day next month

He only came here for Smallbone, he’d previously been restricted to admiring him from afar, now he can be a proper favourite!

Will be interesting to see what we do with the loan slots now Jurić is in. As I understand it, Cornet already has a move set in Jan

He also gives me hope and entertainment, however if we are going to be playing a pressing game, he just isn't suitable. He'll run out of puff within 10 minutes.

Thought Juan was on loan in Turkey for the season?

Anyway, he's nowhere near as good as Göztepe's top goalscorer, Rômulo Cardoso, who is on loan there from a Brazilian club until June. Now, he really does look the business. I wonder if we could swap one of our current so-called strikers for him, but I guess Göztepe wouldn't be interested in any of them as, thanks largely to Rômulo's goals and assists, they are currently the 3rd highest scoring team in the Turkish Super Lig, behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

I was interested to see how Fofana did there, but he has been a bit of a disappointment.

There is value in the January market still, with the right scouting. Last January Villa signed Morgan Rogers for £8m and Jhon Duran for £14.75m the January before (The same January we signed Sulemana and Onuachu). While Bournemouth also picked up Semenyo for £10m, again the same January where we spent bigger money on worse players. The key thing is though, is getting the scouting right.
