Bournemouth 3-1 Saints - Match Thread

Although we never were in this game, it was disappointing how, after getting a goal back, we then hardly created another chance.

It's noticeable that when we get a throw-in, it takes 20+ seconds of fannying around and then it's some crap pass backwards; when we get a free kick 10 yards inside their half, it's a 2 foot tap sideways. Get the ball in the middle. All sorts of things can come of it.

Agree entirely, when you see the set up of most teams there is a definite 'shape'.

Tonight, my first 'viewing' this season, showed how completely ill prepared we are for Premier League football.

Potter would need to be down to his last ten million before considering any offers.

The more I watch the more I'm convinced there isn't a shape or setup as such, I'm convinced the number 1 focus is ball retention, with the daft belief that if we keep the ball we'll win games - which is all well and good, but when you've not really got a shape or setup it's all a bit pointless because you're forced to keep the ball in harmless areas or make silly mistakes as the players aren't where they 'need to be to receive the ball. For PL teams this kind of approach is food and drink, teams won't even have to break sweat.

There's a fuck load more to football that 'posession' and Martin doesn't look as if he's grasped that at any of his clubs.

Absolutely fucking embarrassing from start to finish.

Can't even be bothered to analyse it.

I've really tried to give Russ the benefit of the doubt, and have advocated for giving him time, but we're getting worse not better and unfortunately he just has no idea how to win games in this league. So many awful, mad decisions tonight.

The players look confused and lost, and Russ looks lost too, so it's best for everyone if we leave it there, get someone in who can coach a defence, and try and build something that is at least a step up from humiliation every game.

Martin on Sky….

their first goal disrupted everything.

we knew they would play a quick free kicks and run. We did the same against united. I am so hurt with the first half.

they were in self preservation mode. It was too late in the 2nd half. It is on me, we have not learnt, we were too soft.

forget style of play, this was about the fight. It is going to be a problem.

i have to question myself and not the players. I thought I questioned Bournemouth enough, but I will never blame the players.

I did not recognise my team in the first half. I would not have got this far in my career without talent, but this is my problem to sort out. I asked the players at HT to show fight in the 2nd half.

I don’t feel emotional now, it is clear what we have to do. Joe aribo was outstanding, Stewart wanted the fight. We have the characters to fight, some need to be back on the pitch. The day last year we beat Leeds and went 25 games unbeaten, the 2nd half today has to mean something….

he is clearly a broken man.

RM to Sky...

We’re learning about ourselves all the time. It’s been interesting, really enjoyable. We feel we’ve deserved a little bit more at times.

The first goal disrupted everything. We started really well. We switch off and concede. And then in the exact same way as we did against United we don’t react. I’m so hurt by the first-half performance. I didn’t recognise my team.

It’s on me. I need to give them the tools to respond to the setback. We were soft. If you don’t want to run and fight then it’s going to be a problem.

I thought even after the goal, we’ll be fine, but we weren’t. It’s my problem to sort out. I didn’t like so much of it. I feel sorry for the supporters.

So he means Stephens then.

He’ll be the first name back on the team sheet Saturday. Saka and co. will be shaking in their boots !

Yet only a couple of weeks back he wanted to move away from the 'trusted' guys from last season.

He hasn't got a clue what to do.

Predictable bollocks about the 2nd half then. We should not be reading anything into it, the most predictable 2nd half ever as Bournemouth stepped off a bit as the game was won. Of course we'd look better on the eye, it's irrelevant though.

I note his comment ''we have the characters to fight, some need to be back on the pitch'' - welcome back Jack Stephens?

How do you even analyse that? I thought, out of hope rather than anything, we may get a result tonight.

We look absolutley light years away from Bournemouth, not even in the same universe. For us to say that it equates to absolutley disgraceful management of this club for many years. Bournemouth, with their stadium, size and resources should not be a universe better than us - but here we are. No match to their quality.

Onto the next one? Whatever.

I don't even bother reading much into that 2nd half, I know the narrative from the club will be that we 'fought' in the 2nd half and that we were better etc etc etc - but bullshit to that, it was better because Bournemouth stepped off it slightly as the game was done and dusted. Not even a contest, so I don't want to hear any bollocks about us being better in the 2nd half.

The fact is that we've been absolutley trounced by Bournemouth, fair and square - light years better than us, it's not even close.

I don't know where we go from here, but it looks pretty inevitable that we are embarking on the worst season we're ever going to experience in our lives. How we recover from this season will be the story.

Absolutely this. Martin can’t survive that and to ask him to face Arsenal would be cruel and neglectful even by SR standards. Lallana caretaker for that and let’s see who is up for a massive task.

I’d like to see Moyes on a long contract - manager this season, get us competing ala Luton/Blackpool, enjoy the games again, and Adam Head Coach with Moyes running all football aspects at SFC next summer. Direct report to Dragan and give David the SMS keys basically. When he has had that at Everton and W Ham he was very successful with fit, organised, highly competitive teams. The academies got a chance too, not loads of spreadsheet second rate tat from Rasmus’s spreadsheets clogging up the payroll.

When a manager describes getting beat every week as enjoyable something is seriously off.
What about after the 2nd goal, no thoughts to actually intervene or is that undporting

Personally I think he should focus on coaching the players to 1) be in the right positions to receive the ball when we are passing and 2) defend the edge of the box a hell of a lot better than we have been.

There are huge flaws in his coaching, there were last season, but there is nowhere to hide in this league and managers are eating him for their dinner and then spitting him out.

If I don't watch us at our worst I don't feel entitled to enjoy us at our best.

Feel sorry for the away fans today. Somewhere within tonights performance and the cancelled train there's a "train wreck" joke that I'm not able to formulate.

Everyone was so defeated from half an hour in. Really resigned to it being a complete shit show of a season, if they weren’t already before kickoff

Strangely, on the single occasion that we did that tonight, we scored.

We have always been rubbish at throw ins. Nobody ever comes to receive the ball and the thrower is left having no idea who to throw it too. Kills the momentum.

I've already accepted relegation, so at this point I am curious to see just how badly Martin can fuck this up, yes.

PSR. Basically stops relegation by default. We were just unlucky enough to go down as it came in.

Clubs that get relegated get wrecked by the turmoil it causes, then get promoted and can't spend the same as the worst surviving prem club. And clubs coming up from lower leagues (that avoid that mess) don't have the infastructure to really threaten because it takes years of funding to establish squad depth, commercial revenues, and quality training / academy setups.

PSR is one foot into the world of removing relegation.

If we bought 4 quality players rather than 8 squad players it would help. All we did was bloat out the squad with championship standard players. Ramsdale was quality and it clearly shows. Nobody else we bought was proven prem quality. Also shows.
Budget team, budget manager. Absolutely no hope of staying up. Leicester and wolves will both beat us.

Great. I think relegation is very likely, considering our squad, but I won't fucking enjoy it or find it interesting in the process.

Much like I didn't enjoy losing to Millwall or Cardiff last season. It hurts.

I do like Martin as a person & truly wished something would change for the better for him.  Sadly, It just hasn’t happened & he’s had a decent amount of time to put things right.  The very sad thing is we seem to be going backwards!  Failed miserably in defending & attacking departments.

Get the right man in right now before it’s too late - big kick up the arse & lift, sort out CB Defending as a priority & I’m confident that the rest will fall into place & we’ll have a chance of staying up

There may well be plenty more things in life to be infuriated and depressed about than Saints losing at Bompey.

Erm... Well, duh... That's how this game they call football works, Russ...!  One team scores and the other team is then supposed to mount a comeback rather than go: "oh, bugger, that's messed things up somewhat... Hey ho... Never mind, there's always the next game"

What a bizarre statement to come out with...

If he goes my guess is that it will be before the international break. No point putting someone else in charge with Arsenal away coming up. I suppose they could give Lallana a go as caretaker manager but we need to get the Arsenal game out of the way because that could be brutal.

There is indeed. Shall we revel in all of it here, on this Southampton FC dedicated forum?

What shall we talk about first? Child poverty? The migrant crises across Europe? Israeli aggression in the Middle East?

We are making Sheffield Uniteds 16 point haul last season, seem a good effort. The manager,a decent human being, but a clueless manager, will be similar odds to Ten Hag to be first premier manager to go. Having seen the Ipswich goals, how do they get Delap and Clarke  and we end up with BBD and CA.  Bompey   have recruited well,we have very little idea. The club has become a total joke from top to bottom, very, very sad.

A lot of people probably won't agree but I do. He's a very good manager and will at least make us harder to beat. Isn't a long ball manager either.
