ecuk268 Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Former Saints reporter for the old Football Echo (The Pink). His death was announced at half-time yesterday. In the pre-internet days the Footy Echo was required reading on a Saturday evening. I grew up in Romsey and used go with my dad to the newsagent and it was usually there by 7.00pm. In later years used to do the same with my son until they moved it to Sunday and, not long after, it ceased publication. I always found Bob's reports to be a bit through rose-tinted glasses. We'd get stuffed 0-3 at home and the headline would be "Unlucky Saints". 8
The Kraken Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Ah that’s a shame. Many years ago I used to know his son Mick, he used to post on here as SonOfBob. RIP. 1
Wade Garrett Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Used to love the Football Echo. RIP Bob. 6
Gloucester Saint Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Sad news, a key part of the matchday experience early 1980s onwards for me and our family. Remember Bob’s articles well. 1
derry Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 RIP, I miss the Football Echo. I remember Bob well, Peter East was always ringing me up.
Eric The Red Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Yes very sad news, I always thought Bob gave a pretty measured view of things, though I'd agree with a bias towards Saints. That was OK by me though as I'm biased towards Saints as well! 3
Badger Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Shame to hear this. As others said the Sports Echo was an essential part of your football routine in a bygone era, and standing outside newsagents waiting for it 6.30 onwards as I recall, was part of the Saturday ritual very often. One recollection was how due to printing times, the match report was heavily weighted to the first half (perhaps two thirds on the report ) then the second half would be condensed into a couple of paragraphs no matter what happened and who won ( final paragraph : Saints then scored five goals in the last ten minutes to win 5-4 after multiple sendings off in the 80th minute for opponent . Okay, that's an exaggeration but an indication of how little detail of the later stages was provided). 2
The Kraken Posted 22 September, 2024 Posted 22 September, 2024 Genuinely remarkable how they got it written, printed and delivered to newsagents all over the area within a couple of hours of the game finishing. 2

Sometimes the Pink was being sold as you walked back in to town and as a young lad, I could not always get my head around this futuristic ability. RIP 🙏 Edited 22 September, 2024 by Yorkshire Saint 2
