Saints 1-1 Ipswich - Match Thread

I just don’t get Martin’s obsession with this system which clearly is very limited. If you watch Man City which is the most successful side in England recently, they go long quite frequently. They mix it up. This suicidal passing in defence is not a long term strategy for success and it seems Martin is too blinkered to adapt.

Thought we were second best for most of that half and Ipswich could have had a few but I'll take it. So important to go in at half time one ahead.

Agree. Could do with Lesley on but Lallana having an excellent game and Fernandes having good moments on the occasions we actually move the ball quicker. Does Martin risk us still being ahead at the hour mark when Adam fades? We need to go a bit more direct today, had some joy over the top.

The goal is hiding what is actually still a poor performance. 1 shot on target (thankfully falling to Dibling) and a shit ton of unnecessary wastage and errors from the back.

I disagree. Pretty decent. Not great, not poor.

We need to take a few more risks up front: Fraser in particular. I'd sub him off if I'm honest.

Somehow we had more possession, but we didn't control the game at all.

A couple of good saves and some poor finishing mean we go in ahead, but we need some change in game plan at half time.

I thought Ramsdale goal kicks worked well mixing them up last week. Inexplicable why we have decided to mostly play short this week when we didn't do it previously. Makes no sense and a better team would have punished us already.

We have one shot on target, at home, to Ipswich. That's pretty decent is it? They have 4.

I'm not impressed at all.

Agree with the Fraser assessment though, I never think he should start to be fair, good sub option.

Even a goal has not helped the confidence. We look so nervous and apart from Dibbling no one is prepared to take a player on and the ball just keeps going backwards and sideways.

And get the ball there quickly, more often, mix it up more. Ipswich are watching for the predictable triggers at the back for starting the pointless passing triangles and picking it off. They aren’t any better defensively but are more pragmatic and varied in their patterns of play.

Yeah, I don’t get the tactic at all. As you say makes no logical sense.

What a half !  A symmetry to way both sides playing. High press, aggressive midfield war... we've taken turns to dominate. I see plenty of signs that Martin is allowing more variety. There have been plenty of longer balls when the pressure tightens.

Beautiful to see Lallana showing his worth for us once again. Worldie pass for the goal.

If we can pull this off, it's going to be a much happier week ahead. And I think we can pull this off. Archer to score our second, from a Fernandez pass. Their pace is exciting....

I very much doubt it's going to stay 1-0 but if it is at full time I would take that 100%. The worry is that one of these Ipswich chances is going to get buried and I can't see us creating much. My dearest wish is for Archer to get a goal.

Should have started Big Les as we are so weak in midfield. It's a no brainer.

In place of who? You take Lallana or Ferndandes out, we don't score that goal - Lesley wouldn't have taken up Fernandes position in the box to feed Lallana, and nobody other than Lallana is playing that ball into Dibling.

Very important that we improve second half and get a win as the table will look so much better and we have tougher games coming up. Worried that Their manager has more nous than Russ but we'll see.

I mean, Archer's chance is as close as you can get to on target!

Would have played 4231 with Downes and Big Les as the pivots. Lallana, Fernandes and Dibling as the three and Diaz or Stewart through the middle. We are getting over run because Downes is getting no help and will struggle to hold out in the second half.

Assuming var would have got their offsides, weve had the best chances of the match.  We've had less possession which should please some of the moaners on here, and we're winning. What's not to like?

They've had two dominating spells, we've had two dominating spells.

All to play for second half, and we have the edge...

So Lallana or Fernandes down the left? Neither of them are tracking back and covering. You're solving one problem and creating more.

It's just my take on how we should line up. Not suggesting it's not got limitations but think it would give us a better balance.
