If it’s gonna happen then it needs to happen soon. We don’t want another transfer window getting players in for Russball and then give him the boot, leaving the new man with tippy tappy possessionists! I think that RM would probably get us out of the championship but isn’t close to the master tactician he think is he is in the Prem.

Sammy the Saint would do a better job than Martin. You still can’t see it?!

We would be better off with no manager at all than we would be keeping him in charge.

I think Steve Cooper or preferably Danny Rohl would be capable of getting us out of the Championship next season and both are more realistic targets than Potter and Moyes.

Ah ok fair enough.  Let me revise that statement:

I don't believe a Director of Football Operations who has spent four years in football and sixteen years in Rugby combined with Sport Republic will make sensible and impactful appointment for the betterment of Southampton Football Club.

Lee Carsley. Pretty perfect learning slope to get some low pressure Prem experience then win the Championship.

 

 

Then take us into the Champions League.

Somebody will always want to manage a PL club, even in our position. Maybe the sensible decision is an experienced PL manager with a contract until the end of the season. Then review in the summer after we're likely relegated - but at least we might show some fight in games. Then again, this is SR so who knows!?

Personally I’d have thought he’d be a more realistic option at the end of the season. 

I think your last sentence is not far off the money. If Wednesday stand on their tiptoes and really stretch, they might just be able to tickle the b*llocks of the playoffs but they wouldn't be my bet for promotion. In summer, if he has two Championship clubs to choose from, you'd have to say we were the better bet for promotion.

Credible and available appointments for me are Benitez and Cooper.  Potter and Moyes I fear not credible, although could have been if Board hadn’t been negligent and acted after Bournemouth debacle all those weeks ago.

Please, not a philosophy manager. I am sick to the back teeth of that shit. The only philosophy I’m interested in is one that might win us a game or two.

I’d be happy with Rohl in the summer to be honest. Just hope we don’t get ourselves lumbered with the wrong appointment now, to take us into next year. A decent caretaker with an option would be the sensible way to go in my book. But unlikely to find one.

In a way, our hopeless position may work to our advantage in the immediate future. We're still able to offer a decent wedge to anyone willing to come in, and at least when we inevitably get relegated that person can legitimately claim that the damage was already done and only a miracle would have changed the outcome, meaning their reputation won't be tarnished. It all depends on whether or not they are willing to stick around and build again from the championship next season, because the last thing we need is yet another change of manager in the summer.

I just hope the new manager stops Downes pressing on their 18 yard line and bypassed to give free run at defence . Spurs first goal he was on wrong side of player and did all night he is our one defensive midfielder yet pressing on their box is madness gifts midfield

This has been a crux of our problems, our players are always out of position,  not just Downes but pretty much every position on the pitch, this IS down to piss poor coaching, look at Villa goal as a recent memory, THB getting involved and getting in Woods way when he should be holding position and reading the situation

I do agree about Robbins, and amended my post on reflection. But I fear Robbins will be a ‘great job at ….’ insert club, and dine out on that for the rest of his career.

What he did at Coventry was tremendous, but he built the club up from L2 (I think) so had the momentum and made it his club. Rather like Adkins for us, albeit over a shorter period, but never repeated elsewhere.

I would prefer a good appointment (to state the obvious) and one that we want to be here next season wherever we end up. I'm not sold on the idea of an experienced PL manager on a short term basis just incase we can stay up. Get it correct now, give everyone some optimism and even if we're 10 points adrift at the end, I want to have shown some organisation and fight led by someone we can have faith in. Not more summer change. Rohl appeals.

Not sure Rohl would come, even if we offered him a significant pay rise. His stock is high currently, and the Wendy fans love him. I know money talks and all that, but he would be mad to leave there now while he's still building a good reputation to take a job at a basket case club like ours.

It is harder think of reasons why he wouldn't. As Saints even if relegated can offer a...

Better squad

Significantly bigger budget for transfers and wages

Bigger wage for himself

We'd be funded by parachute payments and player sales after relegation that blow Sheff Weds out of the water. They can't compete with us financially.

Why? He could be Wednesday manager for the next 5 seasons and achieve nothing more than top half finishes the club is a mess off the pitch. If he joins us this time next season he could be top off the championship about to take us back up with a shot and managing a team he has built in the biggest league in the world.  Saints are an opportunity for an aspiring manager Wednesday are not going to get him to that level anytime soon.

It’s similar to Selles leaving Reading for Hull. Doing well at Reading but a mess off the pitch. Given chance to go up a league but to team bottom and he’s taken the chance. Yes they aren’t adrift but managers surely back themselves to turn struggling teams around?
