The managers who have been approached (assuming they have) were probably told you need to play the same way as Martin and said "thanks for the offer but I am not setting up a team to play like that"

Then probably laughing at the suggestion once away from the meeting

I think you have it pretty much right. I have no doubt whoever eventually replaces RM will have been told that they MUST play the current style of football but with better results. Basically coach the errors out of the team that there are currently and turn them into a goal scoring machine. I know Christmas is approaching but i for one don't believe in miracles!!

I think this is completely wrong, it was sold by Wilcox who also tried to implement it at utd the 1st week he was there, that probably got shut down by ETH. SR and RA appointed mad Nate and he certainly wasn't possession based, I think its literally RM has his feet cosily tucked up in the club with no upstairs football knowledge or anyone to question it so it keeps rolling on

Whatever we do, we do not want another manager obsessed with possession football.

The outdated possession game played in your own half is a suicidal tactic nowadays because every manager (except ours) knows how to beat it, even when it's played by top teams like Man City. To continue with it, as we are doing, is completely and utterly pointless. So the longer this 'project' is prolonged, the worse it will get.

Surely this can't be the case - I mean even the stats show we've been complete crap this season! Someone said Phil Parsons once played for Woking? That's a level at which he should have a pretty solid knowledge of the game at least from a playing perspective....

I wouldn’t, things can change very quickly in football. Club could get sold again, SR restructures, SFC DoF finally appointed as Wilcox replacement out of the blue. Lawrie returning in 1994 to sack Branfoot and bring in Bally happened without warning.

Wonder if he fancies supplementing his pension with a bit of DOF’ing  at the moment.
Nothing semi-permanent even, just come in, sack Lego and done. Bit of extra money before Christmas and make up the deficit of losing his winter fuel allowance.

I draw huge parallels with our situation now and our situation then.

We really need a Bally type bounce back.  It probably won’t be enough to avoid the drop but it will hopefully give the fans a team that has a go to get behind.

Loved Bally’s tactics.  Whenever we get the ball give it to Le Tiss.  He can play football, you lot can’t 😂.

Should do the same now, but substitute Le Tiss with Dibling and Fernandes.

I think that Lawrie initially came in to support Branfoot. He was a big fan. If you read his Diary of a Season he says that when he was thinking of taking the Leeds job Branfoot was one of the people he would take with him. However, when he was back in the club he saw what a mess Branfoot had made and there was no way we could survive if we didn't sack him.

It sounds basic but we could do a hell of a lot worse. We are extremely lucky to have a talent like Dibling. He is basically the only player we have who makes things happen every time he gets the ball and that the opposition are clearly afraid of. Telling the other dross to just give him the ball and let him run at people would draw the opposition towards him and create space for others (like Fernandes), and let us win more free kicks in dangerous areas and just generally have teams on the back foot more.

We’re so average everywhere else that we should absolutely make him the focal point of everything we do going forward, as he’s not going to stick one in the top corner from 40 yards like Le Tiss did (though who else could do that), but he’s the only real potential game changer we’ve got, and the only one who repeatedly runs directly at people and gets them backing off which can actually to damage to a defensive shape.

Trouble is that Rustyball requires that free kicks in dangerous areas get passed sideways and then back to the 'keeper under pressure rather than being put into the opposition penalty area.

Just been listening to Talk shite with so called expert analysis, Crock, White and that well respected ex-manager Deeney, blows my mind when they talk about IDENTITY ,Wtf is that all about? All the ex players and pundits alike say that clubs are loosing their identity, for me from a fans perspective these things seem so far away as an excuse to the root of all teams problems .Too much money, poor recruitment, poor coaching, and managers trying oh so hard to re-invent the simple game. Will we stay in touch with a few of the other floundering relegation teams who knows, but we need an IDENTITY.................LOL.

What it says in his book is that he was initially brought in as an unpaid director to move Branfoot on by Guy Askham. He knew both men well from the 1970s and 80s, but says Branfoot fell out with him afterwards and blamed him even thought Askham had wanted rid of Ian for a while. He later fell out with Askham over the ‘reverse takeover’ by Secure Retirement.

My understanding was that Lawrie recommended Branfoot for the job in the first place. That was told to me by a journo who covered Bournemouth at the time.

Perfectly possible, he liked him although Branfoot’s Reading teams played very much long ball football and was as fixed on his way of playing as Russell Martin is on his. Mind you, the style didn’t put Lawrie off working for Graham Taylor in the England set-up.

I worked at the Dell on matchdays, helped run the Travel Club back in the 70's/80's and was quite well in with a number of people there at the time. Ian Branfoot, who was then, I think, Youth Team Coach, was very highly thought of by those in charge. I often heard it said that he would make a really good manager. How wrong could they be??

Approached a few but they declined.

Only hope we have is if O’Neil and Cooper are looking to get back into management ASAP.

Wont sack RM until we have someone else ready to come in.

If anyone thinks Potter/Benitez or even Moyes will come in then you need to stop smoking pot.

Sorry I don't buy that. Why continue with Martin when it can't get any worse? Every game will just be toxic. Just put Calderwood or Lallana in charge FFS.

Lallana as interim. Probably worked out he’d get the gig by Xmas having seen the state of ‘training’.

There's no point sacking him if we can't actually find someone decent to replace him. I'm hoping we can pull another Ralph out of somewhere in Europe but there're pretty long odds on that I fear.

There's every point in sacking a manager who has feebly managed the team to 5 points.

I think some of you are overestimating Adam Lallana's management prowess just a tad. Five points is sh*t but it's nowhere near as embarassing as zero.

I'd be happy enough with O'Neil. Has been shafted by his last two clubs. Won't be a massive change of scenery / profile for him against the backdrop of certain relegation and is a good candidate to sort us out next season.

Two people above mentioned him specifically and until we appoint someone else it's him and/or Calderwood in charge. I'm not saying I want Martin to stay, I'm saying there's no point in binning him for the sake of it IF we don't actually have a replacement lined up.

So the damage RM is doing to the club, the players and the fans doesn't matter then.

There's every point in replacing a dead duck manager who is contributing to an every decreasing spiral of poor performance and a toxic environment within the club and the fanbase. A do nothing strategy is not feasible any more.

There is every point in getting him out of the club. To suggest otherwise is complete and utter stupidity. SR fucked up by not getting rid after the Bournemouth game.

For the first couple of home games certainly, but didn’t the atmosphere deteriorate again after it was realised Selles didn’t have the answers?

It's not going to help either, if there's nobody half decent willing to replace him. By all means give GO'N a go but he's got to actually want to take on a basket case relegation certainty. Paying off Russ however million it's going to cost and then sticking the next Dodd/Gorman/Wigley/Kelvin/Selles in for the rest of the season isn't going to help matters.
