I've got a Football Manager save going atm where Southampton's manager for a few years (I'm in the 2030s) has been David Wagner and he's taken them to multiple top 4 finishes and Europa League glory.

In real life, given he was shit with Norwich last season, I'd say no, but maybe the computer knows best

At least the training ground allotment would be very productive with all of the crop spraying and weather controlled by the authorities.

He isn't coming - but considering how fans are so upset at Martin's style of play I don't understand why replacing it with a very similar style of play is a good idea. It's as if some of our fans haven't ever seen his team's play football and are guessing at a sexy name.

We'd be more difficult to beat, possibly, but pretty much as boring.

Potters style is similar but with more attacking intent. He's certainly been more successful.

I don't think he'd make enough of a change for us to turn anything around though. What we need is someone to drastically shake it up and get the players out of their comfort zone, doing something totally different that at bare minimum will take teams by surprise when they play us compared to what we've done so far.

More attacking intent. That's really marginal.

Brighton fans were delighted when Chelsea took him.

I asked it "Which manager should Southampton FC hire to replace Russell Martin that is realistic and would give them the best chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season?". It came up with this;

  Quote

Marcelo Bielsa

Pros:

  • Tactical sophistication: Bielsa has a well-established reputation for his high-intensity, pressing football. His tactical acumen could help Southampton regain their attacking identity.
  • Improvement of young players: Bielsa is excellent at developing younger talent and could get the best out of Southampton’s emerging stars.
  • Passionate leadership: His high-energy style might provide the kind of motivation and enthusiasm Southampton need in a relegation dogfight.

Cons:

  • Bielsa’s high-pressing style requires players who are fit and committed, and it can sometimes leave teams vulnerable defensively. His tactics might require more time to implement effectively, which could be a risk in a relegation battle.
  • His recent experience in the Premier League with Leeds was mixed, and his style of play is not always suited to every club.

Verdict: While Bielsa is an exciting and high-profile candidate, his approach may require more time and adjustment, which could make him a gamble if Southampton are looking for an immediate impact.

Expand
  Quote

Slaven Bilic

Pros:

  • Premier League and Championship experience: Bilic has managed in both top-tier and second-tier leagues, with his most notable spells coming at West Ham and in the Championship with West Brom.
  • Adaptability: Bilic has shown an ability to adapt his tactics to suit the team he’s working with. He’s also known for his fiery leadership and ability to motivate players in difficult situations.
  • Defensive improvement: While his teams like to play attacking football, Bilic is also capable of tightening things up defensively when needed, which would be crucial for Southampton in avoiding relegation.

Cons:

  • Bilic's time at West Brom showed some issues with consistency, particularly in the Premier League, although he did well in getting teams promoted from the Championship.
  • There could be questions over his ability to maintain a solid Premier League status in the long term.

Verdict: Realistic and could bring a balanced approach to Southampton, though he would need to prove himself at the highest level again.

Expand
  Quote

Chris Wilder

Pros:

  • Premier League and Championship experience: Wilder is another manager with a solid record in both divisions, most notably leading Sheffield United to an impressive top-half finish in the Premier League.
  • Tactical pragmatism: Wilder is known for his well-organized, disciplined teams, which is vital in a relegation fight. He can also get teams playing attractive football, especially with a more limited budget.
  • Proven ability to manage under pressure: Wilder has a reputation for getting the best out of teams fighting relegation, and he knows how to grind out results when things get tight.

Cons:

  • Wilder’s style is very reliant on a specific system, and while it worked well at Sheffield United, the players at Southampton may require a bit of time to adjust to his tactical demands.
  • His brief stint at Middlesbrough wasn’t particularly successful, which raises some concerns about his ability to succeed in the Premier League with a team in difficulty.

Verdict: A good candidate with a realistic chance of stabilizing Southampton. His experience with relegation battles could be crucial.

Bad Wolf’s other login perhaps? Another ultra fan putting the manager above the club. Definitely on a wind-up but I can’t be bothered, especially given the puff piece Rasmus gave to BBC Football tonight.

Enjoy SMS with 14k rattling around it next season you loyal SR troopers. Be warned it sure looked empty in 08/09. Hey, if the husk of a club left gets Man U in the 3rd round of the FA Cup the 7k STH zealots can wave their season tickets.

1984 - A resistance agent is sent back to stop the plastic Martin-800 from terminating promising coach Marco Bielsa.

2026 - Discovering the head of Martin-800 in an old box of Lego, Rasmus has his next idea to break the mold of football...

Just a bit of "fun" but:

If (and it's looking increasingly unlikely) they decide time's up for RM, then could they be considering Carsley? Plug should have been pulled after Bournemouth but possibility they've been holding out for this International break. Of course he wouldn't get to work with the players (other than THB and Ramsdale!) over the 2 weeks but Lallana could keep things ticking over, then the FA would probably release him if a PL came calling....and if he'd want it.

Coached at Man City and coach/interim boss at Brentford. Ticks boxes for Ras. He even experimented with England against Greece (disastrously) in a Saintly-no-striker ploy.

For me, it requires a Moyes-type to sort this mess.

It wouldn’t surprise me, although the stories this morning about a new SR DoF you’d hope are a clear sign Dragan as the one signing the cheques is fed up with Rasmus and sees how far out of his depth he is. Last night’s puff piece on the BBC suggests otherwise though and that Rasmus is doubling down on Phil Giles’s hard work operationally at Brentford (his political sort always take the credit for others’ work). Hence Carsley would not be a surprise at all.

The fans will clearly see it’s another Rasmus folly and unless Carsley pulls off some FA Cup type shock victories at Anfield, Old Trafford etc in the PL, the very frustrated fans will be gunning for him straight away as he will just be a continuation of Jones and Martin so Rasmus keeps the train set despite all of the derailments.

Agree that we need a no-nonsense figure but fat chance until Dragan restructures SR to dissolve the Danish duo out of it.

Until we fix the (clearly) broken process of choosing managers there's no point firing Martin. I would rather continue with Martin and get some kind of continuity than simply repeat the same doom loop again. Considering that I really think Martin isn't going to succeed at Saints with his current approach.

As for Carsley, that would be another desperate uninspiring appointment. Almost Lego Head II , but without the hair, beard, (and charisma ???).

Obviously 80-90% of people want Russell Martin gone now.

Big question, who would you want in?

Who is realistically going to take the job of a Championship based squad and try to keep them up?

Would Sport Republic give them money to spend?

Are they after a yes man that has to work with the shambles that are already there?

We are a lot less exciting a proposition now than we were two weeks ago.

Equally we do have a lot going for us as a club if there are patience. But now is weighing up the balances - how much do you spend to stay up? Do you throw everything at it? Do you conserve some of your money?
