Good news. Means he will stay if we do go down and he's proven himself to be a decent cb at championship level. Bednarek, Stephens, Edwards and wood are a decent championship Central defence.

Agreed. I'm looking forward to next season already! :)

Well if we stay up this year then it will be likely that he will have proven himself to be good enough to keep us up. If we go down then he's proven himself to be decent in the championship. So it's good news all round.

His 'turnaround' in the past 18 months has been fantastic. Glad he has a new contract; been very good for us.

Was he disruptive during the latter stages of Ralph? Or just voicing his concerns?

I'd heard he fell out with Ralph after Ralph dropped him for the FA Cup game v West Ham and then claimed he'd been dropped because he was distracted by an up and coming Poland game.  All of this without speaking to Bednarek directly about it.

I was told it wound up several other players that Bednarek had been singled out for criticism in this way (partly because Bednarek was fairly popular in the dressing room and partly because the players thought any one of them could be subject to similar).  We then went on a terrible run of form.

There's usually more than one side to any story and I've probably only been told one side, but I was led to believe the players didn't like the fact that Ralph increasingly singled out players in public for criticism towards the end of his tenure...

he’s in good company then as quite a lot of the team who have started the season aren’t

if we were to sell him with his new contract in place he would fetch say £15million and that’s generally where we shopping at present so seems a sensible move to me

As someone said last year, if we had just signed a 28 year old CB with 150 odd Premier League appearances and 62 caps for Poland (FIFA rank 26) on a free, most of us would feel it was very good business.  We need a cohort of centre backs in this league in terms of adapting formation and better the devil you know given our current standing - he gets picked ahead of Jack Shoehorn every time for me. Good news and best of luck Janny B!

Not only this (and I'm very pleased he has signed) but he goes from being worth nothing on 1st June 2025 to being worth ~£15m. It's excellent work getting him to re-sign.

Plus if we stay up, we can upgrade and we have a decent third/fourth choice CB.

Maybe not the best CB we've had in the last decade, but aside from the " Aston Villa loan fiasco "  he's DAJFU and is now probably the most

consistent name in the back line.  Went through a bad time when Mark Hughes was "managing"  and wasn't even given a place on the bench.

If he reaches the 10 year period he will be in line with Jose Fonte who partnered 7 (?) other CB's during his time with Saints.

A contract extension like this ....might suggest he'll likely become captain... after Jack's contract runs out next summer.

The Bednarek redemption has been pretty incredible. Hated him two years ago, Nathan Jones brought him back in and now he's a definite starter in the eleven and it's a question of who he partners at the back.

If we're to progress as a club then we can do better and Bednarek should be put in the Gardos/Yoshida role in the future, but for where we're at now we need him to put in consistent performances each week.

No idea what you mean. Would you care to explain?

Even if you don't think he is good enough for the premier league.

Even if you think he should never play for Saints again.

The fact that he has signed a contract has just added about £12m to his value to us!

  • Sell Bednarek in January - he's worth ~£3m
  • In June Bednarek is out of contract and he walks away for nothing
  • Or get him to sign a contract and we get a "28 year old CB, with 150 odd Premier League appearances, and 62 caps for Poland (FIFA rank 26)" that we can choose to sell for ~£15m or play him.

Bearing in mind since his return from Villa he has easily been our most consistent and reliable central defender; clearly still values playing for us and wants to stay, and has effectively given the club ~£12m I would call that "Good News"

In fairness it is not just this comment: There's plenty more on Twitter and elsewhere on SaintWeb that are also worth the odd helmet emoji.

Also his signing might persuade KWP that he would be better to sign a new contract too; rather than risk his career going the way of Ings & JWP. Bednarek came close with the loan to Villa and clearly has decided which side his bread is buttered.

If we did go down

New keeper /bazunu

Bree/new rb Edwards/Stephens bednarek Taylor

New dm Smallbone

Armstrong Lallana/new am bbd/SAA

Archer

That's a very good championship team even before reinforcements and you'd hope we wouldn't have to sell too many

Bednarek is a good redemption story in the wake of that ill fated Villa loan.   It's a pity he's not, say a 15% better player - give me a Fonte or a Toby instead and things would be more comfortable.    I've still got this fanciful notion that RM is going to showcase his man management skills and bring ABK back into the fold coaxing the best out of him.

I’d imagine the scramble to get tickets for Big Jan’s testimonial will be on a par with Oasis. There will be plenty of dynamic pricing involved that’s for sure.

It will be nice to see something dynamic about our team.

Is that really all you've got?

Villa sadly are a bigger club than us, and have deeper pockets.

Is that really all you've got? Helmet emoji thingy.

There are plenty of teams in the PL eg Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, Forest who don't have deeper pockets and none of which would consider Bednarek as a good choice for a CB in the PL

What are you getting at? You literally quoted my answer earlier!

You saying that you didn't think our most consistent international centre back signing a contract extension was good news.

I think this statement is that of someone with very little understanding of football finance. That it also insults one of our senior players warrants you getting one of these.
