image.thumb.png.6e60074638ea450bd5dd8452651e6600.pngI think this set up would suit Saints. And the type of players we have. If you get to watch the highlights all the goals are very “ Saintsy”. It’s a 3-5-1-1 basically. Insert whoever players you like in it but I think it might be interesting…

No thanks to anything with 3 CBs, we have tried it various times over the years and it has never worked for more than as a change up for one or two matches.

I think our squad could suit a 4-4-2 diamond. Something like this.

----------------Ramsdale

Suga----Bednarek----ABK----KWP

--------------Ugochukwu

----------Downes----Dibling

--------------Fernandes

------------Archer----BBD

Yep that’s what I would do, except swap Fernandes and Dibling around.

maybe NOT.

Dibling  likes to run with the ball from deep and, from the little we have seen of him,  Fernandes can at least shoot on target.

This is Premier League and 4 at the back is the waste of one man, whereas the 5 in the middle should become attackers (alternative) defenders

depending on where the play is  / who has possession.  We don't use the width enough, and starting all attacks on the left has become predictable.

Yeah I was thinking Dibling and Fernandes could easily swap places. As could Ugachukwu and Downes.

I'm sure there's another thread about 4-2-3-1 but can't see it so dropping this in here.  England are playing very fluidly and assertively in this system and I'd like to see Saints try it out.  The key is who plays in the Grealish role, the free-roaming 10.  I'm thinking Fernandes.  It could be Dibling but I think he'd work better in the Saka role.  BBD/Cornet/Fraser on the left and either AA or Archer up front.  Given the back 4 probably picks itself (Suga, KWP and two out of THB, Jan and Jack) the other decision is who plays the Mainoo role (assuming Flynn is our Declan).  I know nothing about big Leslie but assume he'd be first choice in that role.

Apart from the half a season which led to our highest league finish in 30 years?

I don't think there is a specific thread for 4-2-3-1 but quite a few including me have been suggesting it's the way to go. If you look at the most successful teams in the Premier League the only side who don't is Arsenal. Liverpool didn't under Klopp but they do now. Why would a team not adopt the same formation as the best which includes Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Villa, Spurs, Bournemouth, Fulham, Brighton and West Ham? Do we think our way is better? Makes no sense to me.

Not how I remember it TBH. We played it for a few games at the start of January after a poor run (Bertrand playing CB left of a three and Targett left back), then reverted back to normal by February.

Perhaps I'm misremembering. I thought we largely stuck with it for the rest of the season.

My memory tells me Hoddle tried it in a pre season match. We were rubbish, and he binned it.

I quite like this other than the cbs. Janny still makes me very nervous and i don't believe he's suddenly good enough for the prem. Would rather THB.

Yeah but you need to have defensive prowess to play CM and Dibling hasn't shown that. Not at all. I appreciate people are excited about him and want to force him into the team by any means atm but a regular central midfielder alongside Downes he is most definitely not, regardless of whether he likes to run from deep

From what Ive seen of Dibbling,he has that Le tiss swagger and vision(still work in progress) and eye opening vision to be that floating no 10 ...IMO. with the right coaching could be the game changer we so desperately are seeking to find,or at least to play a bigger part of the project.

A very bold team selection but Martin does not do bold.

Play a double pivot and then Dibling could be one of the three in front of them.

He's still quite young to be picked for the first team anyway, but in the form he has shown so far, it's certainly worth giving him a run of games ..

who knows? ..he might even score a goal or two , and that's a skill we need badly just now.  Whether he can play further on into the season is

purely academic but right now I think RM is trying to find a solution that might get us even one point.
