Jones got more shit because of the way he came across in interviews. In actual football terms Martin is probably worse.

Jones got sh*t because of this. I’m not going to defend Martin on this thread but let’s not rewrite Jones, his tenure here was detestable garbage.

Nathan Jones is just much better than the fraud that is Russell Martin

On a serious note, take away style of football, nice hair and hipster cucks.. Jones achievements as a manager, pound for pound, far outweigh anything RM has achieved.

That’s so obvious it doesn’t need writing.

Martin has better PR and a band of defenders & press that want to show their superiority over the plebs. They understand the “process”, they have the football intelligence to comprehend his tactical approach. Unlike the dinosaurs who look at irrelevant things like, results, they appreciate what he’s trying to build.

They’ve drunk the Lego Kool-aid, there’s no helping them.

There is some horrible revisionism going on here. I know we're all frustrated but Nathan Jones wouldn't have got us promoted last season, look at Charlton, one of the biggest teams in League 1 and a bigger budget than most, but stuck in mid table.

Jones was woefully out of his depth with an established Premier League team.

I don't see Martin being hopelessly out of his depth in the same way. Yes he's made mistakes but sorry it is chalk and cheese. Martin with a better squad would do alright.

At a glance, one of the few sensible posts on this thread was written weeks ago in October, but Nathan Jones is still being comfortably outshined by his successor Ruben Selles who is operating on a shoestring budget to get Reading into the playoff places.

One of these managers will be managing in a higher division than League One sooner or later.

Here's a hint: It is not going to be Nathan Fucking Jones.

[edit - didn't realise my words would actually come true this afternoon 🤣]

So Everton have lost to two of the worst Southampton sides to ever stink up the Premier League... talk about embarrassing.

SR have been responsible for hiring the two worst PL managers of all time. Of that there is no doubt. How can you get it so wrong?

I’d have Jones over Martin though.

And that's fucking saying something.

Fuck me, SR have hired some shit in their time here.

This is a bit of the counter argument, in my eyes the root problem needs to be sorted before we change again or buy players again. The root problem is a lack of footballing knowledge in the DoF or scouting department, none of them have any idea what football is about. Sadly Martin's position is now simply untenable, so it has to happen, but I wouldn't expect a good call for the next manager with the current setup behind the scenes.

So, scrap all of those, go and snap up some of the scouts Brighton let go and hire a reputable director of football. At that point we may be able to start making the right decisions, but until that happens I don't want SR spending another penny.

That’s the only reason I can think of for the delay, they are getting rid of the whole lot. Seems little point in just sacking the manager when those above him are clearly clueless.

so SR sacks Jones after 3 points in 8 matches, but sits on their thumb while Martin goes 5 points in 15 matches?

are they even wanting to stay up this go around?

That strange camera-lit meeting at SMS on Weds night was clearly meant to be seen. If it wasn’t confirming RM’s departure (I still think it was related to it) then it was something significant relating to SR’s structure.

Dragan if he is vaguely sane cannot be looking at Rasmus’s performance with SFC and Valenciennes and thinking ‘things are going OK’. Ben Chorley is very unpopular as Rasmus’s DoF puppet there. If he must be involved in SR, limit it to Goztepe and get big names as DoFs for Saints and Valenciennes, profiles that can start to rebuild the rubble of SR’s relationships with the communities.

Difference is Martin was successful in his first season in charge so I get the impression they got carried away with the promotion and thought they had found the new Pep. SR have nailed themselves to his mast and probably know it’s a case of make this a success or they are screwed. The problem is there is no DOF, they were probably wanking over the possession stats when everyone who knows football could see that his style of play would be a struggle in the Prem.

He deserved a shot at it but a competent DOF would have known the likely result of him not changing his style and had a few options lined up. Russ should have got the bullet at the first international break and the new man brought in the next day.

I was under the impression that relegation last time out was when we were supposed to have the refresh and a new direction. We appointed a DOF and then never replaced him which is frankly just weird.

This is the problem, we have owners with zero direction or idea for what they want to do. Like you say, they went full on DoF and everyone bought into that, and by January he was gone and they didn't feel it was fit to replace him. I think we've got a former rugby head of performance in the equivalent role now.

SR need to figure out their plan and stick to it, they keep wobbling all over the place.

Not sure about anyone else but I thought we handled the relegation summer really well and Wilcox in particular made us seem like a serious club again. Just nonsensical to basically shrug our shoulders when he left and do nothing to replace him.
