Play a strong side imo, with a few changes to protect most important players / give others (edwards / dibbling) a chance to shine. Should be no fatugie concerns this early on and we need to find something.

McCarthy

Suga THB Bednerak Edwards Taylor

Lesley Fernandes

Dibbling

Archer BBD

RM's presser

  • Lallana available for selection
  • Stewart in full training but not ready for this one
  • Sulemana just got back into training and being monitored for these first few days
  • Fernandes and Ugochukwu will both play in this game

Russell Martin on Tyler Dibling: "I don't want to build him up too much and create pressure but we love Tyler. He is probably unlucky not to be starting after his pre-season, he is a beautiful footballer. He is a special talent and needs to play well tomorrow."

What Happened to Phil Connors After 'Groundhog Day'

Even got the famous number of weeks line in. "Adam Lallana is back in the squad for Cardiff tomorrow. Ross Stewart is in full training and will be playing in the next couple of weeks. Kamaldeen Sulemana training too but one to watch over next few days."

Must be an in joke now.

Does anyone have the date of the last time Stewart was just a couple of weeks away? Might be worth starting a timeline with quotes.

There’s an old joke:

A doctor says to a man, “I’m afraid you’ve only got two weeks to live”.

The man replies, “Oh dear. In that case I’ll have the last two weeks in December”

Confirmed 11 changes on the Echo.

Lumley
Bree - Edwards - Wood - Taylor - Manning
Fernandes - Ugochukwu
Dibling - Archer - Edozie

My guess at it, although I'd rather Dibling in midfield and SAA in for Manning at RW.

We shouldn’t be playing 5 at the back away at Cardiff.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the competitive starting debuts. It seems like it will be a complete change to the Premier League side to give squad players a chance:

https://twitter.com/SaintsExtra/status/1828550115487031669

I think the only reason we will play 3 at the back is if we want to put ABK in the shop window after his injuries + failed medical. Larios doesn't look match sharp yet from his U21 appearances, I'm not sure that he will play with Manning and Taylor both needing minutes.

                 Lumley
Bree Edwards Woods Taylor
             Ugochukwu
      Dibling        Fernandes
SAA                             Edozie
                Archer

Ok, punt at the line up:

Lumley, Breezy, Edwards, Wood, Taylor, Lesley, Dibling, Fernandes, AA, Archer, BBD.

The more I look at our squad on Wikipedia the more I think we are so weak in an attacking sense.

RM said there will be 11 changes so no AA or BBD. Imagine Edozie and SAA will play and we'll see Lallana come off the bench.

I hope we go with the innovative 'U' shape formation.  Even those not picked regularly need to learn this fascinating new system.  Anything less than 78% possession will be as good as a loss for me.

i remember stuffing the ball up my jersey to keep possession, have they tried that yet? 100% success.

Anyone else a bit more interested in seeing the team for this than the forest game? 90% of the 11 for the last game we already know about their strengths and limitations and we knew roughly how they would perform. Quite excited to see the likes of Edwards, Dibling from the start, lesley, Fernandes, Archer etc.

I'm in two minds. Part of me thinks that playing a second stream team is a bit of a wasted opportunity to field our best 11 players (on paper) to give them chance to gel. Russ has stated that he's showing loyalty to the players that got us promoted at the moment, but that could change if/when any said players are struggling to maintain the same levels of form in the Premier League.

So, with that hat on, I'd probably have gone for a line up along the lines of:

McCarthy

Suga - THB - Bednarek - KWP

Downes - Ugochukwu

Fernandes - Dibling - BBD/Armstrong

Archer

(Would that be our current strongest starting 11 on paper? MLG caveat: Yes, I know I've listed 12 players but can't decide between BBD and AA)

But, as I say, I'm in two minds, so I also see the merits of playing all the fringe / new players too.

Will we learn much from seeing Adam Armstrong score against Cardiff though? Or kwp tear them a new one?

No, but that wasn't the gist behind my thinking. As I say, it would give our "best" 11 players chance to gel as a unit. Arguably better to integrate new players in a cup game rather than in a league game? Anyway, as I say, was just me thinking out loud and I can also see the benefits of alternative approaches to this match.

I call it the Y formation. As in WHY.

Fair enough. Personally I'm not sure that gelling was the issue in the previous match, it was the tactical setup. Maybe it would give them a chance to tweak things but I'm not sure how possible that is against Cardiff (and isn't that what preseason is for???).

Maby Amo-Ameyaw for Lallana

Manning, Lallana and Smallbone won't start. It'll be:

Absolutely it is the obvious thing to do which guarantees that Martin will ignore all our good advice and waste a valuable opportunity. Nothing at all to be gained from our youngsters and journeymen being humiliated 3 or 4 - Nil by Cardiff's second string. Only in Russland is that an important learning step. They will of course have been brave and have had 96% possesion and Russ will be very proud of his palyers and really. really love every one of them, what else matters?

Forgot that Taylor hasn't started in the first 2 games. You are right, he'll start.

Don't think Dibling will start, think russ will squeeze Manning in, maby as a DM.

Think one of Smallbone or Aribo will start.

11 changes Russ said so I'm assuming it'll be:

Lumley, Bree, Edwards, Wood, Taylor, Lesley, Fernandes, Manning, Lallana, Dibling, Archer

Forgot Edozie. He'll probably slot in somewhere, maybe Lallana in midfield ahead of Manning and then Edozie wide.

Manning for Taylor who came on as sub Saturday and think that’s the team as will want Manning to get some game time

Not sure Lallana will be fit enough to start. It'll probably be Edozie for Lallana.

I got the impression from the presser that Lallana is raring to go. Certainly more so than Sully or Stewart.

Fairly certain Lallana starts this, hopefully he gets 60 minutes but might only be a half. Likely to be in behind 2 strikers at the top of midfield diamond.

Really looking forward to seeing Les start, options at are six crucial for us.

Would also like to see Dibling alongside Fernandes in the eight rolls.

It's a classic Saints season. Start slow in the league, crush an opponent in the cup and build momentum before surviving by the skin of our teeth. Or start slow in the league, get outplayed by lower league opposition in the cup and set our sights on being relegated with 5 games left. Something like that anyway...

Hopefully we can get our first win of the season tonight in the cup and take the momentum into Saturday. As RM alluded to there will be eleven changes for this fixture:

Lumley, Bree, Edwards, Wood, Taylor, Manning, Ugochukwu, Fernandes, Dibling, Archer, Edozie

Lallana to get 45 mins along with Sam Amo. I'm pretty sure RM said last week that ABK might be in the squad too.

3-1 to us tonight with Dibling, Archer and Taylor scoring COYR 😊

To have a shot at goal?

To score a goal?

To win a match?
