MOTM for me was Rubin Colwill.  Looks like a flipping great player in the making.

He looked useful when we played there in April, not outstanding by any means but certainly had something about him.

Still only 22 but absolutely bossed the middle tonight. It was only a game of reserves v reserves but he definitely stood out. One to watch I reckon.

Lallana is not my favourite person by any means but fair fucks, he was excellent when he came on.

If he can stay fit, play a part and not encourage all our promising youngsters to leave then maybe over time he can still work his way back into my good books, which I'm sure will inspire him.

Nice of everyone to finally catch up.

i said he was something special when i was visiting friends in Exeter in 2011 and we went to watch Axminster Town as my friends son was playing there. A gangly, mini shin padded attacking midfielder was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch, he remind me of a young Matt Le Tissier, and a VIlla youth team player i had been tracking as part of my COT role.  i knew there and then he was be a great player. I actually told Nicola Cortese about him when i bumped into him in the Corriander Lounge and a few years later he was ours.

It’s needs putting into context (again) but it was Cardiff reserves. In the second half as they tired.

A good showing tonight but some of the “this should be our first team” guff written throughout match is laughable.

Let’s enjoy the result. Fernandes showed he’s got something about him but none of these other lads are beating down the first team door based on that.

When I saw him play for Millwey Rise FC at the age of five I thought, there’s a young lad whose style is just like that of an older lad I’ve seen called Jack Grealish who I’m sure will play for England one day.

These games are always useful to see who can step up.

Great shift from Tyler Dibbling. Enjoy him the vultures will be circling. We aren't allowed nice things.

Archer and ABK showed their class. They are Premier League players no doubt there.

The squad is definitely starting to take shape.

I’d suggest Cam Archer staked a claim

RM has some huge decisions to make in terms of selection for Saturday's game against Brentford. I wonder how brave he will be because there were quite a few tonight making claims for a start.

I remember it well - a chilly night on February 17th, 2006. For reasons I shan't elaborate on here, I just happened to be present in the maternity ward of Royal Devon and Exeter hospital as a young Tyler Dibling emerged fresh from the vag. As my gaze fell upon the screaming newborn, I clearly recall muttering the words: "Hmm, oddly reminds me of Jack Grealish." His talent was clear for all to see even then.

Oh I know. You can only play what's in front of you though, and with the caveats that it was against very weak opposition he was good, as were Dibling and Fernandes.

We've been shite against shite opposition so many times though, that I'm taking a bit of encouragement from it.

Edozie should definitely be a long way down the pecking order for first attacking sub after that performance. SAA shrugged off the ball quite a few times, but much more composed and used it better, even aside from the fantastic finish.

Yes maybe. Nice finishes, he seems like he’s decent on both feet. A few raw moments but that’s expected. Don’t see him and Adarma in the same starting lineup IMO.

As did Big Les and Tyler Dibbling. Lallana was superb and it was a good cameo from ABK. SAA was also very good but probably still not ready to feature much in the Premier League although he probably deserves minutes off the bench.

On coach going home after weird game and different to some on here.

Bree and Taylor were very good defensively.

Edwards composed and did well in his position not so in midfield poor move.

Wood poor on ball and liability.

Big Les will be some player as will Fernandez alongside Flyn.

Archer was sharp and SAA looked positive and good goal . Edozie should really have done better on 3 occasions not sure where he is going at moment.

ABK , Lallana good subs controlled well.

Dibling at times tried too hard but he is some talent.

Surprised Cardiff took off Colwill who was excellent for them.

good win and enjoyable drive home on coach now

Much more composed finisher than AA. Seemed better at holding it up as well.

Dibling and Amo-Ameyaw need to start together in league games. They are training partners and bring out the best in each other, as we saw in pre-season and tonight. When you have two very good players with an understanding like that, you don't separate them, you build your team around them.

I was the gynecologist who artificially inseminated his mother and could see straight away from the svelte-like way his spermatozoon moved that he was destined to follow in Grealish's footsteps.

Matty Fernandes has been a nailed on starter all week I think listening to RM. 50/50 whether Big Les gets a start for me.

4-3-3 means Archer between BBD & Arma.

Thought ABK did ok, but he did misplace a pass that would have been deadly in the PL.

Edwards playing 6 at the end when he was already knackered was asking a lot. On the face of it a frustrating game for him, but you could see he is a higher standard than Wood.

If it hadn't looked like going to penalties I think we would have seen SAA & Tyler subbed off, as both were knackered, but as it was they were left on to take them. Turned out ok due to Bree's Thunder Bastard. They both look excellent but for the next few months I see them as subs to get 20-30mins per game so they don't wear themselves out and get injured.

Glad Archer got on the scoresheet.

Assists for Fernandes, Taylor & Dibling (2)

We’ll see! AA needs to break through his glass ceiling but “that” goal at Wembley plus a big amount of career goals suggest he’s decent and knows what a composed finish is. But truth is Cam Archer and AA have both got to prove they can do it at the top level.

No.

Training partners? Do they train separately from everyone else?

Both excellent talents but both proved tonight they need minutes and not starts just yet.

I just happened to meet his parents right after their 20 week scan, and distinctly recall telling them that now we knew the baby's sex, we knew which Saints team the baby would be a success with.

They thanked me, reminding me that waiting until then was more appropriate than my interruption when the baby was conceived, shouting about the baby's  future in football.

That's a lie because I was there when he was conceived naturally. His dad wearing just a pair of socks round his ankles beautifully delivered the assist straight up the middle and I knew from that moment a special talent was going to be born

Agree with this. Loads of positives. I thought Fernandes going off was a little bit of Martin going to be involving him at the weekend. The others will be getting game time, but really aren't starting PL level across their game yet. Archer excepted perhaps.

Well, that was more enjoyable than some of the second team run outs in the cups in the last two seasons. Looking at Gillingham and Grimsby.

Players:

Lumley, had some good, had some bad moments and cost us a goal.

Bree, was going to say you know what you get with Bree. Solid, yet unspectacular. Yet, he scored the best goal of the night when it looked like it was heading to penalties.

Wood, yeah, this man isn't a Premier League player. Haven't done too well off Swansea after Martin.

Edwards, slightly disappointed with him, had some really poor moments, expected more, but he's still got time on his side.

Taylor, did a good job at left-back.

Dibling, wow, what a talent. Sign him up to a new contract quickly, two assists, really forward thinking and exciting to watch. A player who is going to entertain us a lot.

Ugochukwu, plays with a swagger, goes about his game effortlessly and always in control. Can probably replace Aribo soon.

Fernandes, man of the match. He's the perfect Martin player. Only recently turned 20, he's going to be very good. Has to start on Saturday.

Amo-Ameyaw, had a really good first half, doesn't always come off for him, but he took his goal brilliantly. Very quiet in the second half, but did a lot more than the other winger!

Edozie, if we sign another winger before or on Friday then he needs a loan out as it just isn't coming off for him at the moment.

Archer, didn't do a lot, but stuck the ball away twice with instinctive finishes. Something we've been missing for a while. Hopefully he can do it in the Premier League also. Supply him in the box.

Subs:

Bella-Kotchap, whether it was to give him 25 minutes to show other clubs that he is fit, or to reintegrate him back into the side then he had a successful showing either way. Would be handy if he could have the Bednarek redemption.

Lallana, if he was 10 years younger... He'd probably be scurrying off to Liverpool and playing out wide. But, tonight he looked decent. Wonder if his son can do those spins, I don't think there's another player in world football who can twist and turn so successfully like he has throughout his career and he hasn't lost those.

Akachukwu, can't remember him doing anything.

O'Brien-Whitmarsh, welcome to double barrelled fc, great showing.

Larios, great showing.

Overall, it's given Martin a few more things to think about, which is what you want from the second string side and hopefully Martin will look to the 4-3-3 formation going forward. I really want to see a BBD - Archer - Armstrong front three. We still can't defend playing the formation without Downes, however.

And final note, we're signing a player with a very good chance of being England's new number one, so happy days all around.

Reassuring to hear...

"We’ve worked a lot the last few days in training that when the two 8s get the ball, they should drive forward in the middle and have someone run on that top line, and Cameron did that brilliantly tonight. He is going to be an outstanding player for us."

Who is better than Big Les in midfield? The choices seem to be Aribo or Smallbone.

That was truly shocking. He might even be worse than Baz.

But he made up for his earlier gaff with a game saving stop when the Cardiff player was through on goal.

The other two gls oawere unstoppable.

It is true he also went off at the same time as Fernandes. I thought he was later.

I had been thinking of a more gradual change, with it being Downes, Will, Fernandes Or Downes, Fernandes, Aribo with Les off the bench.
