We both know that if we go down he'll be proving that he can do it on a cold, wet windy morning in Cobham

with all the other stiffs who can't make the Chelsea team..

You know you have a problem when Raheem Sterling is captain of the bomb squad, and you have committed to paying him another £50 million between now and June 2026.

Don’t think it has translated too well but sounds like their coach appreciates that Mateus Fernandes is a big loss but necessary to keep other players.

Hopefully the financial driver behind this sale is to our benefit and we have an exciting young talent that is going to hit the ground running like Lavia and Tino did.

The way RM talked about him in the press conference and the way that every Portuguese person seems to comment on him suggests that they think he is going to be something special. The Portuguese seem to think he has potential to be one of the stars in the Portuguese national team, and they want to see him progress well.

RM said that they were recruiting specifically for players who really wanted to be at Saints, and not just in the a shop window. For Fernandes and for other players that want to fight for a place in a national team (like Bijlow) Saints offers the chance to play every week, and in the toughest league in the world: Much better than weeks on the bench at a dysfunctional Chelsea or Man Utd.

Thought Mateus had a good PL debut today. Put himself about, good positioning, good layoff for Taylors cross that Archer really should have put away. Not bad for a 20yr old playing his first match.

Agreed, I really liked the look of him. Him and Dibling stood out from what was otherwise mediocre at best.

Yes, he did alright and was obviously keen to put a shift in and impress.  There was one bit on the left where he played a quick one two with someone that didn't quite come off but that was down to a lack of anticipation from the other player (can't remember who) but showed he's good at quick passes around the box.  Also stood up and wanted to take the free kick so he doesn't look the type who will hide away.

Looks like we're going to have to hope he becomes a bit of a standout this season but he'll need a bit of quality in front of him.

Ran the show tonight against Cardiff until he was subbed off on the 60 minute mark - presumably because he will be starting against Brentford at the weekend. The game went very quiet for the following 30 mins.

Dibling set him up nicely for the first goal, but there was still plenty to do, and it was sweetly finished.

Knee slide to the corner flag scored a 5.9 from the Portuguese judge and suggests a player who may have scored once or twice previously. 😉 😁

He set up Archer's first goal too. Exactly the sort of forward ball, through traffic, on the edge of the area that we were so missing at home against Forest.

Consider me sold on that showing. Good touch, thinks and moves the ball very quickly. His involvement in that one touch 2nd goal was sublime.

He could get battered around a bit by some PL CM's as he's not the biggest, but he does look like he can give as good as he takes.

This is what makes him so valuable to us. His quickness of thought and action is a breath of fresh air after seeing our other midfielders labouring and taking so long to spot passes and movement. He must be one of the first names on the team sheet.

He's bloody 20. I know it's still early days but he looks like he's a Rolls Royce of a player for 20. No wonder Sporting fans were sad to see him go, he looks very good already, nimble, vision for a pass, a good touch and finish. Looking forward to seeing more from him.

And this is the key part - will RM trust him enough to start him ahead of Stephens, Smallbone and Aribo? I hope so because those guys are likely to get us relegated.

I think he will. He's been incredibly complimentary about Fernandes and turned straight to him at HT in the last game. I think Smallbone has used up some of his chances with RM now and he'll get rotated onto the bench on the other side of the break

All the hype going to dibling right now but arguably Fernandes even better .. seems to have it all great carrying the ball, uses it cleverly pops up everywhere .. looks a fantastic signing

Thank goodness we don't have to choose between them, both should start over Smallbone and Aribo. If they're good enough they are old enough. Smallbone owes part of his inclusion in the starting XI to being "one of our own" an epithet that he must share now with Dibling. That advantage has gone so life will be a bit tougher for him now.

He should definitely start from here on in. Too good not to and he isn't likely to be here too long like a couple of others.  Mind you he's on a five year contract so we might get to see him play more and get even better but to do that we have to stay up: he'd be wasted in a lesser league.

I think it really has to be a starting 3 in midfield of Fernandes, Ugochukwu (who should be encouraged to play his own game as he's very good) and Downes (who is the worst of the three and probably adequate at this level,  but no more). That is actually a pretty good midfield and left to play football it'll take care of itself.

Downes has been nothing but excellent for us, that’s very harsh
