Sounds good to me!

Russell Martin said: “Mateus is a player we have been monitoring for a while and someone we are really excited about. He brings great energy, retains possession well and always looks for the forward pass.

“He is young and full of enthusiasm to come and play for Southampton. With the ability he has to drive forward from midfield, we think he has some key attributes to really help us – not just in the future, given his age, but here and now in the Premier League.”

Sounds like the o'riley alternative to me. Non scoring though which is a bit of a worry still.

Sugawara obviously a very good player, so hopefully there has been some amendments to the recruitment team from two years ago and this can be another gem. Downes, Ugochukwu, Aribo, Smallbone and Fernandes all vying for the three spots. Good competition when in previous years we've had to keep the same midfield game by game due to having rubbish like Diallo as backup.

Now, onto a goalkeeper and a Tadic like creator.

Jack Clarke for me. Think we have been in discussions with him all summer

  • Lighthouse changed the title to Mateus Fernandes - Official: Signs 5 Year Contract

I seem to remember the forum (myself included) was sniffy about Rafa Silva when he was at Braga because he'd only scored 5 senior goals during his first two seasons. 77 league goals and 71 assists after he moved to Benfica suggest we were probably a little hasty. Hope Fernandes kicks on with us like that.

Just listened to his Estoril manager Vasco Seabra talking about him to the BBC:

Talking about him is easy for me, he's a humble, hard working boy with a lot of talent. It's never difficult to speak about a player with as much talent as he has and I think the characteristics of this player are so well-suited to English football.

He's a very aggressive player with great ability to cover a lot of space, he can run a lot of kilometres without tiring and he is happy to play closer to the defence to help create the first phase of constructing an attacking move. We used him a lot to come back and help us to begin the attacking phase of play.

He can also play closer to the goal. He always listened and asked his teammates how he can help them. I believe that the Premier League is the right step and the ideal championship for him to continue his growth now. His target needs to be to reach the Portugal national team now and have the high-level career that we think he can have.

He's really strong, the way the competition goes in England is better for him because he always take a step forward, a step forward, a step forward. He's really aggressive and strong in his body and he plays with a lot of intensity. In Portugal, he fought against Benfica, Porto, some of the most famous and best teams here in Portugal and he wants to take a step forward against them.

Here in Portugal, everyone compares him a lot to Matheus Nunes [Manchester City]. Fernandes has characteristics that are similar, you will see that. He is capable to play in more spaces than Nunes though, he can play in the first phase or close to the goal, but at the same time, if you want to play with inside wingers who come between the lines, he can help you with that.

Somebody kindly reposted what I said on the main transfer window thread, that I thought he was a good buy.  To add to that, when looking at stats for last year, he was mainly the guy that broke the initial press and got the ball forward.  Estoril under Vasco Seabra played 5 at the back with two very high wing backs.  One of those, Gomes is now at Wolves.  So Mateus was one of the DM albeit a bit more forward looking.  So the lack of G/A could be both position played and the fact Estoril are not a big side.  Of course a bit of a gamble but I think probably with the greatest upside of anyone we have signed recently apart from THB.

I received some complimentary WhatsApp messages this evening from my Portuguese (Sporting fan) ex colleague. I'd not spoken to the guy in three years but he was so gutted to have sold Fernandes that he reached out to say what a fantastic player we've signed.

I'm taking that as a very good sign, he knows his football, so I'm very curious to see what this boy can do.

I'm really excited by him. He looks like he has everything you could want in a CM. Scans frequently, has high technical ability, is two-footed, very athletic and aggressive defensively. Out of everyone we have signed, in my opinion, he is the first that could be bought by a super club within a couple of years.

His ability to receive the ball and dribble past pressing defenders is something our midfield lacks currently. Very Lavia-esque in that regard.

After a bit of bedding in, he's ahead of Alcaraz, Smallbone and Aribo for me. Looks like an excellent fit for the system.

Another Juanmi, waste of wages.

Brilliant signing, this will push us forwards to becoming a stable a Premier League club again!

Just getting a post in early for 2 years down the line… I’ll edit out whichever hasn’t applied in that time!😁

Seriously I know nothing of this player but it’s always telling when the club losing a player are gutted he’s gone… so welcome Mateus!

Another potentially very exciting addition to the squad. From his clips he is a player who is adept at playing killer passes to his forwards so hopefully the likes of AA, Archer and Brereton Diaz will thrive off his service. Looks a real prospect for his young age and is likely to get some game time judging by RM's comments. The squad is taking shape but we still need a goalkeeper and striker

Looks a top prospect, have to view it as a good deal for us and on a five year deal a solid investment.

But...key question...are we going all in on the " "Fernansh" pronounciation?

I think the cherry on top of the cake would be a glowing endorsement from those two Reading supporting farm hands, if it’s a thumbs up from them, we will then know he’s the bees knees 👍

With the Mara fee and a new keeper seemingly on the way, more chilled about this signing now. It leaves a loan space free to get the attacking midfielder or winger we need. Mateus looks a promising prospect, let’s hope he adapts and makes a good contribution this term and beyond. If he goes on to a top 6 outfit for big bucks then it’s a good bit of business. His use of the ball in tight spaces might help us particularly.

Sounds like he's in the Bryan Robson\Michael Ballack mold from yesteryear. If he's anywhere as good he'll be a great player.

His stats suggest few goals, and few assists. But you can see how his play would create plenty of chances ie the pass that creates an assist

Sat on a beach in the Algarve (it's 35 degrees in the hot sun here), but anyway......  I have already had 2 people having seen my Saints shirt say what a great player he is and how lucky we are.

The Portuguese seem to think we have a real star in the making.
