Mateus Fernandes

Recommended Posts

Have never heard of him. But Adam Blackmore is retweeting Fabrizio Romano so it seems likely to happen.

I have a Portuguese mate who is a big Sporting fan. Have asked him for feedback. In the meantime the chap above seems to be a genuine Sporting fan.

Think this guy could be similar to Schneiderlin - a real dynamic box to box CM with fantastic physique. We needed someone to open up stubborn defences in the final third and equally have the balls to fight and re-gain possession in our half - this is that man by all accounts. Does that mean the end of O’Riley - not according to the CoT thread?!

Sporting fans love this guy -

Kill me, whyyyy. He's going to be a top player, this is pocket change

Amorim confirmed Mateus was close to leaving after today's game. This comes seemingly out of nowhere...

We're probably doing it to avoid selling starters, but I wouldn't do it. Mateus' potential is sky high, elite modern B2B in the making.

He has a ton of potential as a box to box, he's always running and is good on the ball and he's good defensively as well. Treat him well for us

He's the Sporting academy player that's got me most excited since Palhinha, and somehow more than Palhinha.

For fuck sake, this one sucks.

I'd have said Ugochukwu would be competing with Aribo and this is Smallbone's competition. All barring Smallbone hopefully able to cover Downes in a time of a need also.

Our last transfer from Sporting Lisbon was Cedric and he was a bit crap despite having an incredible agent. Hopefully this turns out better. Our only other dealings with Sporting were for a defender named Marco Almeida, but he was before my time. His Wikipedia page reads:

"After impressing in pre-season friendlies he made his first-team debut as a 71st-minute substitute for Claus Lundekvam in a Premier League match against Arsenal at the Dell, on 19 September 1999: within eight minutes, he was alongside fellow substitute Thierry Henry just outside the Southampton area, when the latter received a pass from Tony Adams. He stumbled while trying to clear the ball, allowing Henry to wrap his foot around the ball and send a rocket of a shot into the far corner of the Southampton net, in what was the Frenchman's first goal in English football.

Although Almeida made a few appearances for the Saints' reserves, including scoring in a 2–2 draw with Chelsea on 22 September 1999, he was never again called into the main squad and, in December, the loan was cancelled."

Really? What do you base that on? Fonte was a Euro Champion winner too. Was he awful as well?

Couldn't cross, couldn't shoot, couldn't tackle, constantly out of position, slow as anything.

But yeah, he won a European Championship. Nathan Dyer won a PL winners medal and a League Cup medal.

Shit arguement fella. Think you'll find that Dyer never started a game for Leicester that season, Cedric was a regular starter for Portgual.

And? He won a medal. So he's great or something.

What did Cedric actually do well on a regular basis?

Yeah, that's bollocks.  Personally I always thought Clyne was probably a bit better but Cedric was decent.  All about opinions obviously but I'm filing yours under "clueless".

I think you're being incredibly harsh on him. He was a relatively solid player in my eyes, nothing more, nothing less.

You don't become a regular Portuguese international player by being shit.

I'm not bothered what he did for Portugal. I'm asking what he did well for Saints, on a regular basis.

OK, if being a Portuguese international isn't enough for you, he also was part of the teams that finished 6th and 8th for Saints.  Koeman thought he was decent enough and he's probably a better judge than you.

*Mateus

I really like the look of him. He has everything in the toolbox to become a complete box-to-box CM. For me, after bedding in he goes straight into the team ahead of Aribo, Smallbone and Alcaraz as an 8. But, he may need a bit of time to adapt to England and the Premier League.

I saw some here saying they hoped Ugochukwu was the next Lavia. Personally, I see Ugochukwu as an almost carbon copy of Lavia's Belgian teammate Onana - tall, rangy and very defensively minded. However, watching clips of Mateus at Estoril last season gave me serious Lavia vibes.

He was playing CM in a double pivot last year, like Lavia did for us, and the way he was able to receive the ball deep with his back to goal, turn and drive up the pitch was very similar. He also is able to make those line-breaking passes from deep that Lavia did when he got into his best form.

Unfortunately, I don't think Aribo or Smallbone are good enough to start in the league regularly. To me, this is a very necessary transfer in a weak area of the side. He seems to have every quality Martin would look for in a CM. My only concern is how slowly Martin will integrate him given his age and inexperience.

Is Mateus the Stu replacement? And if so, will O'Riley be the Alcaraz replacement?

Cf saint who's posted on here before, is an Estoril Praia season ticket holder (where Fernandes was last season). Hopefully he turns up on this post to give us his verdict.

I remember seeing him drop a comment on the main transfer window thread... quoting it below to save others digging

Rare there is a player I can actually comment on but Mateus was a real stand out for Estoril last year.  I can’t say I have seen anything of MOR other than the highlights stuff so impossible to compare but Mateus is good.  As with anyone from a league at a different level it may be hard to adjust but he is physical, technically good, hard working and great vision.  Pretty pleased he will be a saint.

My Portuguese mate has got back to me. He supports Sporting:

“Mateus was lined up to be on the main team this year, and he was loaned to Estoril (mid table) He played well for the team and was their best player all season. Sporting fans were expecting him to come in and stay, but with Morita, Hujlmand, Bragança, Pote, Santos and Araujo coming in Sporting ran out of space in the midfield.

If anything could be said against him it was that he always came across that he thought he was the best and should be treated like so. I hope, for Portugal sake, he gets humbled a bit, and grows a bit too.”

When you look at the midfield of Lesley, Downes, Aribo, Smallbone, Alcaraz and Charles (with Charles rumoured to be going out on loan), it does look very light.

Unfortunately, I can see this will reduce Alcaraz's chances to becoming a regular player for us even less. Just hope Fernandez is one of those players who can see an opening because creativity is an issue.

This thread shows 3 really quality through balls. Hopefully there are a few more where they came from. I can imagine Arma, BBD and Archer thriving on these passes.

Surely this puts to bed any deal for O'riely..? We're a little stacked in midfield as it stands..

DM / 6: Downes / Lesley (I think this is a really solid set of options)

CM / 8's: Smallbone, Aribo, Fernandes, Alcaraz

Downes is going to start every game hes fit to, which will probably be about 70% of the season all being well. Lesely hasn't signed to sit on the bench for 70% of the season, so realistically leaves 4 people fighting for 1 spot atm..

Obviously Alcaraz is going to leave, I wouldn't be surprised if Aribo left as well tbh. Could see him going somewhere like Saudi.

I do fear that given our options, whislt I think we'll be defensivley a load more sound, there is not much goal threat.

Did we end up signing that Portuguese kid we had on loan last season? Seem to recall there was a report saying we’d bid 4m euros or similar. Only reason I ask is that I hope we can integrate Fernandes without the same problems Charley had. If he doesn’t speak English then I don’t think we have another Portuguese speaker on the playing staff.

Edit: Ussamane Djalo was the player I was thinking of and appears we didn’t

Unless I'm missing something this clip shows a series of repeats of one pass?

We're going to need a selection of good quality midfielders to cover for injuries and suspensions otherwise, as Harry used to say, we're down to the bare bones.

I hope he can bring that to Saints. So many times on Saturday Arma made the out to in run off he ball and no-one attempted to find him.

Like the sound of this signing.

Another one of those "promising young player" signings that sounds superb on paper (and on YouTube). Let's hope this one can hit the ground running on grass too...

lol. If you look at the full thread on Twitter it has a number videos each showing off a great pass. I don't think OP meant just that one video lol.

The full thread is a very good read/watch from and English journalist who covers Liga Portugal. He seemingly rates him very highly and expected Sporting to be starting him this season.

I saw in his comments on another post that he was completely perplexed as to why Sporting are selling him. He seems to think that one year at Sporting and he'd be getting sold for 4 times as much to a massive club. All very high praise.
