I do like the look of this guy. Guessing we don't have an option to buy included if he's highly thought of at Chelsea.

The reports are that there is no option to buy. Seems less able to play on the turn than Lavia; so presumably that will still be Flynn's job. But he does seem to have the destroyer element to his game like big Vic had.

We've really been missing a tall, strong, athletic CM player for some time.

He may not come back but he doesn't play in the same position as Fraser so I don't see how.

I should clarify, I was referring to the squad number. Not that squad numbers hold *that* much importance. But if there was a chance he was returning, we'd have surely given Ugochukwu another shirt...

Russell Martin on Lesley Ugochukwu: "It is the number six position mostly where he will compete with Flynn Downes or play alongside him, but it's a big position with lots going through it so it takes a bit to learn."

"They [new signings] have only had a couple of training sessions but we are delighted they're here. This is their opportunity to be here with us in the Premier League, I have been impressed with them. The challenge is to force their way into the team."

Fair enough.

Good player. A type of body we've missed and it'll be really important in certain games to set-up with both him and Downes in midfield.

Feel like they could compliment each other really well.

He could be the big midfield unit we've been missing for so long. Covers the ground rapidly with his long stride so can snuff out danger. He's a tidy passer and is capable of breaking forward and carrying the ball. Just what we need and I feel he should start on Saturday alongside Downes and Fernandes. However, I doubt RM will be so keen to change two in midfield so we may only see Fernandez which would be a pity.

All his touches tonight against Cardiff. Big Les bossing it.

Lavia crossed with Wanyama - you love to see it

Some silky play there laced with power - the guy is a tank and will be better than Wanyama was for us. Like Fernandez he spots a pass quickly and plays it. With these two our midfield will have a bit about it and move the ball much quicker.

The good thing about having another defensive midfielder on board is that Smallbone can operate further forwards, which is more his thing. But with Fernandes and Les on board, with Dibling pushing hard too and Lallana looking like he has something to offer, Will and Joe have their places in jeopardy right now.

Hope we can get rid of both, and utilise the two loan slots.

Tempting to bring Charles back, but probably better for him to stay at Weds.

Would like a new central defender and goal scoring striker, but we will probably end up with another left sided defender we won’t use, and an injury prone striker 😉

He's looked crap every time I've watched him - get rid (and Cornet).

He probably isn’t crap, I just don’t think we need another uppity player in our position.

Cornet, he is a proven player, is he fit, is he confident? I wouldn’t judge him on the Stoke performance. Apart from a few shoe-ins, the others just don’t get a run. It must be extremely difficult making the odd cameo and feeling you have to set the world alight to get another go, that is extreme pressure.

Would have liked to see him in a double pivot with Downes as I think we'd have seen the best of him. Unfortunately RM is not one to try different formations and I don't think he's ever experimented with 4-2-3-1 which the vast majority of the best teams play. Russell knows better I guess.

Apart from all the different formations he's tried.

The ‘U’ shaped one with our strikers stood next to the linesmen was my personal favourite

Maybe time to try the one that most successful teams use then - or is that too obvious or not left field enough for clever Russell who is determined to prove he can reinvent football for clubs outside the top ten - not working is it?

He's proper shit......couldn't trap a bag of cement and has ideas way above his station (at least currently).

Laughable how everything is Martin's fault accordin tgo many on here.  Blame Martin for the many issues we have but I'm surprised the haters on here are not blaming him for the trerrible budget, war in the Middle East, etc.

You do realise Martin approved this signing right?

Cornet and this lad, further evidence that recruiting with SR is fucking appalling

Agreed on those. But I find Fernandes has been a superb bit of business, Harwood-Bellis has great potential for a young CB and Ramsdale was a proper signing, Downes as well. Some awful business but a few that deserve some credit as well.

He makes Carlton Palmer look accomplished - that’s how rough his touch and close control is.

At least Carlton had a decent motor on him (cue Vauxhall jokes) as did Victor (Vauxhall again..) Wanyama later on.

Lesley by contrast runs in treacle. The sporting director who mugged Chelsea off for £22m for a bog standard League 2 big lump CM needs watching to replace Rasmus though. Very shrewd selling.

Cornet was quality at Burnley. Not sure what happened with him?

Not sure if he had injuries but certainly lost his way at West Ham and didn't make an impact, he might be better off in championship or foreign league like Belgium where he'd get more space

Downes is miles off it in this league unfortunately.

Big Les has been a huge disappointment - no formation in the world will make up for such a lack of physical presence for a big lad, or playing the game at a pace about three times slower than everybody else. Was really hoping we’d found a great partner/cover for Downes, but the search goes on.

Not a popular view on here I know, but I still think Shea Charles is the long term answer as partner/ cover. I certainly don't think Les is any better than him and I wonder how their wages compare, with a loan fee etc as well?

I think he's been stretched and asked to cover too much at times especially when the likes of Lallana offer little in tacking but certainly wouldn't say he's miles off it, he's a good player in my opinion who would benefit from more energy around him.

Big disappointment as he seemed a decent addition to the squad.

Did Chelsea pay a big fee to sign him from Rennes(?)

If so, just as well as our talent spotters didnt recommend shelling out a tidy sum to sign him up.

Agree with this. Manager is letting Downes down.
He needs help but we have a fucking imbecile in charge who can’t set up a midfield.

As for Lesley… absolutely horrendous. I know he was rated at Chelsea so I’m not sure what’s going on…Is Martin playing him out of position, or is he just worse than anyone thought?
He really has been abysmal so far. Can’t decide if him or BBD is our worst signing.

Might be good in a few years with some loans to league one / champ.. but currently he’s an absolutely woeful footballer at this level. NOWHERE near ready to play in the PL.

Slow, clumsy, can’t tackle, doesn’t track

Absurd that we’ve brought him in over Charles

Thought he did ok against more experienced players and was playing on his own there at times.

He wasn't as bad as Aribo but he gave away a very clumsy penalty and lost his man for their goal that was disallowed.

He just isn't consistent enough at the moment and to play him in a two with Aribo was basically suicidal.
