I would not in the least be concerned if AA, BBD, Archer and Stewart never put on a Saints shirt again. In fact, I'd rather we fished around in the lower leagues and found another Rickie Lambert. In fact, I can't think of the the last time we brought in a striker from League 1 or below. 2

I can't think of the the last time we brought in a striker from League 1 or below. 31st August 2024 We have had little need to do so for many years as we've been in the Premier League and the vast majority of L1 or below players won't be good enough, especially those in their mid 20s or older. The only signings we'll make from those clubs will be promising youngsters, for example last summer signing Baylee Dieppa from Port Vale... https://www.port-vale.co.uk/news/baylee-dipepa-completes-permanent-transfer-southampton-0 Edited April 21 by Matthew Le God

Don't really understand why people go on about getting the next Rickie Lambert considering we were a bloody L1 club ourselves when we bought him. And he wasn't some undiscovered gem, he was the top scorer in the division. 2

That's probably because League 1 (and below) are not stuffed with Rickie Lamberts and most players in there are in fact a bit sh*t. Lee Barnard scored 20 plus goals in a L1 season, their current top scorer is currently on loan from QPR. I've no idea who you think is likely to outscore BBD, AA and CA from that league but no names leap to mind. I think Lambert got about 30 goals for Rovers the season before we signed him, he was clearly far too good for that league, even before we banned him from eating takeaways.

I thought it was MLT who was banned from the Big Macs. You're right, there doesn't seem to be anyone banging in goals like Rickie Lambert was doing before we signed him, but our scouts should be looking at the Charlie Kelmans of these leagues and working out if they have the potential to move up a division. If a player has a natural touch and good attitude, much of the rest can be coached and with all the information at the scouts' fingertips, it shouldn't take them much time to build a shortlist of candidates. Like managers, there seems to be a revolving door for players. They have a good few months at a club and they're set for life. We must be able to find players better than BBD, AA and CA. They might also be hidden in other clubs' academies or are overseas but I still reckon we don't look hard enough in the lower leagues.

Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted Tuesday at 17:46 Posted Tuesday at 17:46 I think he has the potential to be very good in the Championship, if managed correctly. From his perspective, he's come to a team where he thought he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet and that hasn't been the case. He hasn't helped himself but then he's had two awful managers that haven't really played the way that suits him. Chuck in a load of behind the scenes upheaval and it's not hard to see why he's unhappy. Pretty much every player in that squad has underperformed this season so he's not alone. A settled manager could make all the difference.

I haven't really watched much of Pompey to give any kind of opinion on Bishop, but on the face of it that's a really underwhelming suggestion. He's the same age as Armstrong but has spent his whole career in L1, apart from one season scoring 11 goals in the Championship. To me that screams, "building a bottom half Championship team," rather than one that'll go straight back up and stay there.

He is an extremely lazy player who appears to rate himself way more than his actual talent levels. The genius who thought recruiting him and BBD from a dreadful SHeff Utd (relegated) team would make all the difference this year shoudl be shot! 1

I always find it difficult to work out if a player is just extremely lazy or downright incompetent. When Archer first played for us, he looked like he had the presence to hold the ball up and could see an opportunity, but his last few appearances have been disappointing in the extreme. He's nowhere near the action, doesn't try and win the ball back and is generally only noticeable by his absence. I think he's just useless. Indeed, just another modern day footballer. More concerned about his hair and looking the part than paying back some of the fortune he steals as a living. 2
Patrick Bateman Posted Wednesday at 09:06 Posted Wednesday at 09:06 I see a good player in Archer. But he is one of MANY players in this squad that aren't trying hard enough and appeared to give up earlier on, going through the motions, seeing out relegation. So along with all of those players, he is welcome to leave the club, in my view. If he wants to crack on, score 18 championship goals again next season then fine but I can't see it happening at Saints right now.
Lord Duckhunter Posted Saturday at 18:43 Posted Saturday at 18:43 Another woeful substitute performance. Complete and utter waste of time. Offers zero movement upfront and just goes through the motions. Useless again… 3
AlexLaw76 Posted Saturday at 18:49 Posted Saturday at 18:49 Made Ross Stewart look decent. Fucking horrific performance. He is simply not a lone striker in this league, but our managers keep sending him out as one 3
