Saint_Ash Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Excellent. Looking at his preseason he'll be ready to go straight in by the look of it. 2
Saint_Jonny Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Feels like this one came out of nowhere and got done quick! 1
SNSUN Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 That's Mara almost definitely gone then too. Tis a good day. Strikers will likely be Archer, Stewart, BBD and AA then. I still suspect Onuachu will be off but with Stewart's fitness suspect I wouldn't be against keeping him. Unless the idea is still to bring another striker in but I doubt it. 1

sfc4prem Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Not mind blowing but he's young, hungry to improve and looks like he'll fit into the dressing room nicely. Definite resale value.
Sheaf Saint Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Well that all happened quickly. This signing has made me quiver with excitement. 1 1
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Well, I hope I'm wrong about him. Welcome aboard. Should be able to come up with a unique chant for someone called Archer surely?
ChrisPY Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 He’ll have made his England debut by the end of the season.
HarvSFC Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Looking like it's five million to upgrade Mara, happy days. Archer was part of the England Under-21s team that won it and captained by THB, so a link there. He scored the third goal in the 3-0 semi-final win over Israel. A front three, if we adapt our formations depending on the match of Brereton-Diaz - Archer - Armstrong is so dynamic with lots of movement and pace. I'm quite excited by it on paper. At times last season we were predictable to defend against and that's because we didn't have many runners/movement. Everyone was admiring their pass and stayed static and Adams for his strengths, really struggled with his movement, especially when in the box, wasn't really ever on his toes, or mobile enough. Of course, if it does go tits up this season, then these three have all proven that they can score for fun in the Championship. I'm looking forward to those over the top balls we've been playing a few times in pre-season and last season going to a more pacier front man now. His Sheffield United loan didn't go well, but maybe the style of Heckingbottom and Wilder didn't suit him. Carrick's tactics are much more similar to Martin's and he was a success at Middlesbrough and has shown he knows how to find the back of the net. 1

I once predicted Jack Stephens to make an England squad, around the time he was keeping Martin Caceres out the team, so I'm going to keep my mouth shut on this one. Although I think THB isn't a million miles away from the England team. 1
Midfield_General Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Nice surprise out of what feels like nowhere. Welcome aboard
Maggie May Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Bullseye! Happy with that. Upgrade on Mara. 1
Hatch Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 shirt number 50. or whatever it is for a bulls eye in archery

hypochondriac Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Watched his interview. I wouldn't say he's much of a linguist or a stunning intellect but I don't suppose it matters if he performs and keeps us up. 1
LuckyNumber7 Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Pretty underwhelmed if this is our main striker signing tbh, we've basically signed Sheffield Utd's attack from last season. Gives me Rhian Brewster vibes, scored a few in the Championship but struggled in the PL. Anyway really hope to be proved wrong and good luck to him. 1 2

Miltonaggro Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 I think what Armstrong, BBD and Archer provide is a lot of fluidity and movement so hard for oppo to pick up and defend against. Combine that with our new Japanese fullback who can cross and pass at pace, plus hopefully wee man and things could be interesting. 4

Think we’ve lacked height and strength up front, Hoping BBD may offer something to change it, not sure Archer does.
sambosa75 Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Don't know much about the lad but it was definitely an area that needed strengthening. Hopefully he's the right type of player for the team and exactly what we need. Any chance of a keeper please? 1

Whilst I hope you're right it's not a fair comparison. Mara has never been first choice for Saints, and according to the below website he actually was one of the best performing strikers in the championship based on minutes played last season, with 8 goal involvements in 616 minutes on the pitch. https://footystats.org/players/france/sekou-mara Again, not saying you're wrong, but judging number of goals scored by a first team starter against a bench warmer for number of goals scored is not particularly accurate imo. LGTL Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 We are going to have a shit hot team in the championship for 2025/26 at least!
Pamplemousse Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 I think it's a good signing, still only 22 so plenty of time for him to improve, and if he gets even 10-15 goals he goes from £15million to £30million plus very quickly in value.

A poor record doesn't mean he isn't a striker! Unproven, sure, but he's a striker. Whether he's an upgrade on Mara remains to be seen, but here's hoping 🤞

davefizzy14 Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Welcome onboard Cameron Archer 😊 very happy with this signing. He can score goals and he's raring to go having had a strong pre season. In the squad for tomorrow, confirmed by RM 😊 1
M271 Posted 16 August, 2024 Posted 16 August, 2024 Aston Villa forum for him has 266 pages and was started in 2019 when he came on for his Senior debut. They seem to generally like him and wish him good luck. Some comments: Being as objective as possible I think he'll never be prolific in the Premier League. Always liked Archer. I hope he goes on to have a wonderful career. He deserves it. One of the few of our ex-players whose career I will follow with interest. Hopefully he has a sense of permanence in his career now and can score loads of goals. I was never a big fan of the buyback deal, good luck to him in the future. £15m is a little more than I thought we'd get after the non-starter of last season. Hope he does well, he's just not suited to our system. If they play to his strengths he'll get a minimum of 10 goals Good luck, cya next season etc.. joking aside, good luck apart from when playing us! Finally looks like a permanent home for him, hopefully can kick on from there! I like Archer, but feel like he's going to be one of those Dwight Gayle types that has excellent seasons in the Championship and then can't quite make it translate to the Premier League. He has some great natural instincts but he doesn't really have the size, pace or strength at this level which you're never really going to get away with when the standard is so high. He wouldn't be a bad squad option by any means but it's just a move that makes sense given the circumstances.

Can counter that Mara had not shown enough to get into the team in the first place there and had come on to play against tiring players.
