Welcome to Episode 286 of the Total Saints Podcast, your home for all things Southampton FC. This week, Jono Holmes, Steve Grant (Saints Web), Alfie House (Daily Echo), and Glen de la Cour (League1Minus10) take a look at the first game of the season.

In this episode, no points for Saints in the opening game at Newcastle but has the performance left us feeling optimistic for the season? As the transfer deadline approaches, we take a look at the potential incomings and outgoings. Plus – We preview of the Forest home game next weekend with Michael Temple of the Forest Focus Podcast.

*We had some wifi issues in the livestream this week so the video playback is a bit laggy in places. The audio podcast will always be a more polished, enjoyable experience over the stream playback.

I always enjoy listening to TSP, but I was surprised today that there was no real mention about the elephant in the room, RM's tactics of playing it around the edge of the box. Yes there were vague mentions about tactics, but not specifically about what is driving most of us nuts. Not only are most here on SW ripping those tactics to pieces (see Russell Martin and Brentford match threads), so were the match taters and many pundits. I'm not saying any of you should agree (in Alfie's case he probably needs to be diplomatic), but I was hoping you'd discuss it one way or the other.

Has Glen been fired? He can be outspoken so maybe he would have given his opinion!

I concur. Thought this episode was pretty bland noting our continued suicidal set up, and with the “narrative “ comments from Martin,.

Personally felt it was a sensible, reasoned discussion where it was acknowledged that we have made too many errors leading to goals and need to improve fast by cutting out the mistakes and changing the setup to provide more passing options and have players in a role they know and are used to.

The panel are there to provide their own views so I just assumed what they said was what they thought, and it seemed reasonable to me.

They didn't address why those mistakes were being made (in all three matches), namely from the passing around back and forth and slow walking out from the back when under pressure, and the almost universal condemnation from fans and pundits alike. As I said, they don't have to agree with the criticisms, but I would have liked to hear their views on the matter. As I said, I am surprised they seemed brush it under the carpet. I'm sure they are well aware, especially as Steve Grant is one of the them.

Did I listen to a different episode? I feel like they did address it?

Steve even spent a bit of time talking about how a lot of the issues are caused by a lack of pace on passes in our own third which then invite the opposition, from what I remember, and the importance of upping the tempo and zipping passes into people, the midfield being more progressive to alleviate pressure on the defence

They also spent a bit of time discussing Ramsdale’s distribution, his tendency to play a bit longer when pressured and his ability to break the lines and find pockets of space in midfield with mid-range distribution / throwing

They didn’t go on a rant about ‘pissing about with tippy tappy at the back’ or anything like that if that’s what people were expecting, but if we’re saying that it was an elephant in the room and wasn’t discussed at all then that’s just not true from my recollection. Alfie House also shut down the ‘narrative’ comments from RM by saying it’s not narrative, it’s what is actually happening and we can all see it

They did talk about it, nothing was "brushed under the carpet".

Don't really know what you were listening to or what you were expecting them to say.

You probably missed it because they didn’t use the term ‘Wankersen’ or ‘Lego Head.’

I don’t want to get into a tedious argument about this. I’m not criticising them, it’s a great podcast and they can discuss whatever they like. All I’m saying is I’m surprised they made no mention of most fans and pundits condemning the way we play out from the back.

But they don't really ever discuss what other pundits say.

Pretty much without exception they have usually been to the game themselves. They are a primary source, not a secondary source chatting about what other people say.

Always a great listen and largely spot on with the analysis. Was chuffed to see it be nearly 90 minutes last week, the longer the better.

I’d rather listen to a Saints related podcast than your generic 606 or Sky “Top Six” love in. It’s boring hearing “Boehly out” or “ten Haag out” every two minutes.

Thanks to everyone for the discussion after our last episode, we try each week to provide balanced, informed analysis and discussion. Martin leads the conversation but beyond that the panel don't get told what to think or say, it's just their opinion, whilst Alfie has to be diplomatic he's certainly not a mouth piece for the club or RM and we feel openly talks his mind on almost every issue. As @CB Fry says, we aim to be a primary source, not a secondary one. Not saying we get that right every week, but that's our aim. If there's ever a talking point you feel we're missing or would like a little more on, there's a live comment section on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch every Sunday at 7pm alongside the episode, we're always happy to hear from anyone there.

The TSP crew are usually quite cautious and diplomatic about the manager, but I get the impression even they now seem to think that it's a matter of not if, but when, RM is terminated.

It would be great if everyone on the podcast didn't have the same diplomatic and cautious opinions on everything - there's no real debate about anything just a whole lot of agreement and fence sitting

Usual entertaining fayre. Would be nice to have a little bit of niggle between them as they all agree. Need a bit of rival opinions to liven it up a bit lol.

Very gentlemanly and very accommodating like Saints defence at a set play.
