I look at that Leicester side and think are we really that much worse than them that they can go and give a very average Spurs side a game, and at least have a go at staying up, whereas we're just a hopeless laughing stock who expect to lose every single game? Our squad is crap but is it that much worse?

No it’s not, and it’s not 10 points behind Ipswich’s either. The 1 point we got from 2 home games against them were criminal and it’s been downhill ever since. Had we beaten Ipswich, drawn with Leicester & 10 man Newcastle we’d probably have picked up a point or 2 elsewhere as confidence wouldn’t have been as low. All ifs and buts and we’d probably still be in the bottom 2, but we wouldn’t be talking about getting 12 points or not.

Amazing to see crosses into the box leading to goals. If only we could get Saints players to do so more often when in attacking wide areas.

They seem to be more robust and organized than us. Our heads drop way to easily and we lose our shape too often.

That Leicester win basically leaves us 12 points from safety due to our GD, and we’re not even out of January yet. What an absolute embarrassment.

Also, I can't fkn stand the love in with the champions league, load of rubbish, terrible new way of doing it too, ugh. Yeah I'd love to be following Saints around in it, but it's still awful.

I watched Barrow v Doncaster instead. 3-1 to Donny, cold night in a proper old school stadium in Cumbria.

He gets down to low shots about as well as Baz does. To think I grew up with Shilton-Flowers-Beasant-Grobberlaar-Taylor-Jones-Neimi

And now we’ve had Forster, McCarthy and Bazanu.

Dave Beasant!  If I remember rightly, when he was Chelsea's goalie, he gave a masterclass of comic proportions by scoring 2 own goals. He was on the transfer market pretty quickly after that. Cue Southampton! 😀

And it was an error v Liverpool kicking across the line that did for him at Saints. Served us well though and a top bloke, kept us in the PL under Dave Merrington in many games that season. Also saved a penalty in Wimbledon’s 1988 FA Cup Final win.

He was a character and no mistake, as was Grobbelaar. Are there any characters like this in today's football?

When we signed Beasant it raised a few eyebrows in a similar way to when Crouchie arrived, both had been, at times, calamitous with their previous clubs but these two did well for us and became popular with the fans.

John 'Budgie' Burridge and Borac were another couple of characters with a good rapport with the terraces. We also had Sunderland's '73 cup final hero James Montgomery on loan for a bit mid-70s, I saw him make his winning debut for us away at Luton.

When we were kept behind at Fratton Park after that testimonial match for their keeper (Alan Knight?) Beasant came out onto the pitch and kept us entertained with his light hearted sense of humour.

Yeah, this is true. The DEF had some heavy artillery out that day and they kept us in for the skates protection. When they heard we might be coming out they started attacking the police as they were so desperate to get away. But you ain’t see any of that in their books.

Over an hour wasn’t it?

I think it was the same occasion. When I got out of the ground there were some police there and one, who was dressed up like a robocop, said mechanically “We   are   going   to   Fratton   railway   station”. I looked at him quizzically and he repeated it.

I had gone by car and the last thing I wanted was to go to the railway station in a precession under police escort as a moving target so I politely declined.

“You’re going on your own sir? Well good luck!”

He obviously didn’t expect me to survive too long. I wasn’t worried. I was an old white haired pensioner in a plain raincoat. When you get to my age you become invisible and nobody even notices you. After 50 yards I had blended into the background. Evidence of a big disturbance was everywhere.

Yes the Skates knew the DEF were being held inside for their safety so in usual skate style started giving in the trampoline behind the safety of the police lines. After about 30 minutes and knowing full well the police would have to let us out to make sure we made the train back and avoid Europes most dangerous crew being stuck in Portsmouth for their night the police started to warn the skates they needed to leave the area. Cue a stampede as they desperately tried to get away resulting in them smashing windows of shops and houses as they tried to find a place to hide, even a few police we attacked in their desperation to escape.

when we finally got out as expected the skates were all safely tucked out of the way with the police lines protecting the few that were stupid enough to still be in the area. An unchallenged stroll back to station. once we were back on the trains surprise, surprise the skates came out of their hiding places and started bouncing around again gobbing off. Those that were there know. If we’d have got anywhere near them that day they’d have been torn apart, lucky for them the police did their job and protected them from am absolute pasting so they had to smash up their own city to hide from us

Yep, with lumps of concrete coming over the wall, and a police liaison PC observing earlier that there were faces there they hadn't seen for years! A very embarassed Alan Knight(?) came out to thank us. My experience was the same as yours as I was driving to the east but as I wasn't stupid enough to wear colours and look the very model of sweetness and innocence (cough..) I was nodded through with the same advice.

I feel like Brighton have lost their way this year, it was always likely though - clubs of that size cannot continue to compete at the top end, one bad transfer window and it's curtains (as we found out). They had a disaster of a window last time out, and they spent £200m - of all that, I'd say only Rutter has been a regular for them. They dumped all their scouts as well.

Their manager choice has been questionable too, I'd say a good chunk of their fans want him gone and have done for a while.

Brighton have started the process of becoming us. Was always going to happen at some point, just like it will to Bournemouth eventually too.

As soon as the media started interviewing their CEO and proclaiming how much 'profit' they've made, you just knew it was over.

Weirdly, just like Burnley, they’ve sacked Dyche and immediately stopped being sh*te. It’s almost as if he’s not the tough, pragmatic, hard to beat, proper old school manager that some like to fantasise about.
