Not that I agree with it but that is case apparently. 1
Stripey McStripe Shirt Posted 28 December, 2024 Posted 28 December, 2024 It's Saturday, between Christmas and new year and there is no English football happening anywhere. Which idiots scheduled that? Sure usually at least one of the leagues would have a round of fixtures?

Oh for the good old days, 70’s, 80’s perhaps, when you’d get fixtures in quick succession over Christmas and new year. Plus of course three games in four days over Easter. Wonder what Klopp, Wenger and all would have made of that. Proper football, proper fans, in freezing conditions (Saints at Arsenal, Boxing Day 1970); no dyed haircuts, and especially no mincing about gloves for outfield players or leggings ! (Think Keith Weller at Leicester may have started the leggings trend early 70’s though) 1

Which idiots scheduled that? Sure usually at least one of the leagues would have a round of fixtures? Way back clubs used to play both on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and they were often the reverse fixtures so that both clubs had equal travel requirements. As an example, on Christmas Day in 1913 Arsenal travelled up to Bradford, winning 3-2 and then beat them again 2-0 at Highbury on Boxing Day. Generally morning kick-offs in those days where it was deemed socially acceptable for men to go to the football and pub on Christmas morning/lunchtime before returning home to consume the Christmas dinner their wives had been cooking for them. Christmas Day 1957 was the last with a full league programme. In 1958 there were only three First Division matches played on December 25, and in 1959 just one. The last English League match played on Christmas Day was Blackpool versus Blackburn in 1965. This info comes from https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/football-christmas-day-match-history-victorian-tradition which highlights just how different football was back in the day! 1

Well yeah but he also fouled the Villa player. It's like they just make it up as they go. 2

Lighthouse Posted 30 December, 2024 Author Posted 30 December, 2024 I'm just glad that they're dragging Everton and (hilariously) Man Utd back into the equation. It always makes headlines when big clubs look closer to the bottom than the top, but they'll quite obviously finish in the 50's or 60's come the season end. Top half I expect. 1
Sarnia Cherie Posted 31 December, 2024 Posted 31 December, 2024 Just imagine going to the bookies at the beginning of August and putting a bet on that at the start of 2025, Forest would be 2nd, Man City would have had a run of 14 matches without a win and the Man U manager was talking about relegation. Oh well. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
