Is this the same McCarthy that was so sound at the end of last season that everyone is rubbishing or have we signed another one?

People seem to have been spooked because in a few practice matches he practiced doing a few things he's not very good at and found he's not very good at them  which is what practice matches are for, I thought.

So he won't do them in a league game, I hope.

He was trying to earn that new contract he was after. Now he's got it he can take his foot off the pedal again.

I would venture that depends on whether or not we go back to 'pure' "Russball" or the scaled-down version we witnessed at the end of last season...? McCarthy is only following orders, after all...

Thing is if you remember the game when Bazunu got injured against Preston, we played a really high line. It looked like everyone was scared to pass back to McCarthy and chose not to.

The following three we reverted to passing back all the way to the keeper.

3 straight losses. Conceding 8 and scoring 1 over those 3.

I resolve to get huge pleasure each time we successfully pass the ball out of the back and break forward. There will, I predict, be at least three embarrassing losses of possession, one of which will lead to a goal, but if there's enough of the other kind (courage, be our friend!), I'll take it. I actually love the experience of seeing 21 triangles lead to a zip-zing and we're away. I like Russball. It's entertaining as hell. And the tension is part of that. Miss Bazunu, but still...  we have to try to see if we can hold onto the system we've been practicing for a year. It served us pretty well last year.

One key thing to look for. Can Smallbone cut it in the premier league playing the role he's embraced? He's looked v elegant as the escape ball master. Every time he does something impressive today I'll be cheering. (And of course counting on Downes for his brilliant break-up play.).

Fantasy moment:  we're trailing 1-0 in the 70th minute. Tall Paul comes on and scores a headed goal from a perfect Sugawara cross....  It can happen, friends. It can happen.

Totally agree with you. Could we improve on McCarty, yes ... is he a rubbish PL keeper, No. I think he is a decent, PL traditional goalkeeper who  is focussed and good at the unfashionable things ....  like stopping the ball going in the back of the net.

How does that work then how does he take the foot off the pedal and why

Do the other team members know he is doing this

Sems a bit far fetched to me

I've just got this feeling, deep down in my scrotum, that we are going to see another 9 today. A real 'we are back baby' statement loss

We are an unbelievably open defensive side and Newcastle an unbelievably ruthless pacy attacking side. It could get nasty.

Maybe you are trying to grow some balls in that empty tingly scrotum?

First minute goal for us. SJP gets on the Magpies' backs. They throw everything at us but we stand firm, breaking clear to seal the game 2-0 in injury time.

Then you turn FIFA off and get ready to watch the game on stream.

Team exactly as predicted. Interesting no Edwards or Charles on the bench. Good to see Alcaraz there.

Wasn't Edwards one of the most impressive in pre-season?

KWP in the shop window or we've settled on keeping him now?

Why wouldn't he play? JWP played before we sold him last year.

Am I the first to say it?

Why the fuck is Jack Stephens starting?

It does surprise me that we've not looked to improve our starting CB options considering how many goals we conceded last season against lesser opposition.

It's hard to see us getting anything today, I just hope there's some hope and we don't get absolutely thrashed.

Resigned to it now.

Fair point, but we barely used KWP all pre-season because he was up for sale.

A injury to THB and we have a back three of;

Wood - Bednarek - Stephens

Not great.

RM got a new shoehorn for his birthday?

I'd much prefer Taylor or Edwards there if I'm honest. I like Stephens as a leader, but that's where it ends.

I’d argue that Bednarek is as important if not more so that THB at the moment,  but your point still stands.

You could have been the first to use "shoe-horned in" this season.....big chance missed!

A coach shouldn't ask a player to do something he can't do. Martin didn't last season so there's no reason to believe he will this. Martin may be stubborn but he isn't stupid. He wants to win the game whatever he might say about playing a certain way.

We won't lose 5-0 with Jack in the team.

Don't think anyone dislikes him, he's a lovely lad. We just know he can be a liability at this level.

I hope we predominantly play four at the back over the season, we’re generally better attacking teams than trying to hold them to a draw.

But I completely agree with that selection and that formation of five at the back against the tougher teams, it makes complete sense

I was under the impression that woods was a proper backup option so didn't pay much attention to him. If he's the first one on following injuries or tactical changes then I'm concerned.

My heart: We defend with our lives and get to half time 0-0.  SJP is getting anxious they can’t get a goal against us despite dominating. Second half sees a resolute backs to walls defensive masterclass, Lady Luck co on our side. Holding out at 0-0 until we get a rare foray into their half, BBD scores with our only on target shot and we win 1-0. 🤞

My head: We get caught in possession pissing about at the back. Gordon squares to Isak, 1-0 after 8 minutes. We carry on trying to play out. Keep getting caught out and ht it’s 3-0.
Second half we try and tighten up but it’s too late. A kind Newcastle score 2 more for a comfy 5-0 win.
