I keep dreaming it’s gonna be 5-0 or 5-1. And it won’t surprise anyone. That’s the bad part.,

I think the first scoreline is a bit surprising, in that it means we're keeping a clean sheet. 🙂

Newcastle beat Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening day last season...

So what you’re saying is Champions League is still on should we get battered?

Haven't popped in this thread until now, good to see everyone's feeling positive. I don't think it will be as bad as everyone's fearing.

We’ll play pretty well and lose.

Think that’ll be a pattern for a fair few games.

Think this is more likely than the 4 or 5 - 0 doom forecasts. Teams are quite tentative for first few games.

Dibling has been one of the standouts in the pre-season friendlies. Again at Millwall he looked good. Wonder if Russ Martin will do with Dibling like he did with Sam AA last year ie. give him a couple of sub try outs and then maybe even a full game to show his worth. Otherwise, who stands in the middle and please don't say Adam A?

Going to this one. Fully expect a spanking but enough about my Saturday night out in Newcastle. We live in hope that Geordies are over confident.

At least we all seem pretty prepared for a hammering this time. That Sunderland result came out of nowhere and was a complete shocker.

Difficult to see past a rubbing at pleasant. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised and we look better than I think we will. Most likely a brutal welcome back.

Personally a good rubbing isn’t a bad outcome 😉

Inverted wingbacks, high line, pissing around at the back, shit goalkeeper(s), no spine, stubborn manager..... what could go wrong

Might end up promoted much to the annoyance of you.

At this point it’s a bit difficult to predict given potential incomings. I think we’ll lose, but not sure it’s going to be the huge drubbing everyone’s predicting… probably 4-1.

Newcastle really have our number at their place, so far from confident, but looking forward to seeing us play again.

Why would I be annoyed getting promoted , just because I can't really stand RM, but fair do he got us promoted , a lot of luck involved as with GB in goal we wouldnt have the promoted,  the cards stacked nicely and we changed how we played with AM in goal, he won't learn and we will go back to this pissing around at the back and he'll be gone by January, I hope he wont be as it would indicate we are doing ok

I highly doubt we will get rid of Martin even if we go down.

We pissed around at the back to score the goal that got us promoted btw.

The same "pissing around" that cost us automatic promotion in the first place...? ;) #banter #twosidestoeverystory

As things stand, that is to say with no new first class signings in before this match, I fully expect a drubbing of some sort, 6-0 has been on my mind but like many on here have already said, first games are often not as expected. Newcastle may not be full on, we might come out fighting like dogs and end up losing like 2-1 or similar. If we get even a point I will be amazed. But then again, we have all seen those amazing opening days scorelines, often by newly promoted clubs. Could it be our turn?

Yes, if you like. It’s almost as if just saying ‘pissing around at the back’ as a thing that makes or breaks success is daft.

Wow! Am I the only person here who has that 'new season' hope feeling?

I'm going for a 1-2 Saints win, Armstrong and BBD to score.

Then we'll lose at home to Forest 😁

We're gunna win 3-1, Stewart will rise from the dead to score a hatrick off the bench and we'll all lose our minds.

More chance he'll get a perforated eardrum from a few murmerings of "fuck off you mackem twat" and be out for 6 months.

6-0 they will pummel us and we won't get close to their goal.

Hoping you’re wrong obviously. Bloody long journey home after a shit show. Sunderland was bad enough.

Not sure what is worse to face, the journey home, the jubilant home fans, or smug glow off of Eddie Howe which  will radiate  high into the away end.

Let's face it, for some reason, Newcastle are a bogey team for Saints. In our 22 visits to St. James' Park, Newcastle have won 16 times, Southampton have won just twice, and there have been four draws. In our last six matches with NU (home and away), they have won five matches, and there's been one draw. Yikes!

We used to always beat them at home - not so much since they came into big money.

Our recent record against pretty much everyone in the Prem is going to be shocking, with the exception of Chelsea and Arsenal oddly. Even Leicester and Ipswich who both did the double over us last season.

I've avoided coming on this thread up until now because i guessed it would be mostly doom and gloom. However with a week to go before the big kick off and still 4/5 signings away from being a competitive Premiership side i have to say I agree with the majority posting on here and think we will get battered on the evidence of the pre-season games so far.

Newcastle 6 Saints 0

We did the double over Leicester the year before though

Eddie Howe does not need 100 hours of video analysis to know how we are going to play. In particular our GK.

Putting a good spin on it I’d say saints fans need prepare to endure many a  statement defeat if you like - to show how wedded we are to becoming excellent at a certain style of play. No matter interim results along the way.

Sadly I don’t think this current team is going to score as many goals from Alex to the back of the opposition net in 10-30 cute passes as the opposition will from Alex accidentally passing to them in our own penalty area. And the latter is gonna happen all season long.

So relegation is almost a certainty - unless FFP rules hitting other clubs saves us. Get accustomed to that and the season may become more bearable.

At this EPL level, with these current, mostly, barely EPL level squad players, we may score 5-6 supremely beautiful goals playing our way - but the cost of playing our way will be we also concede 30-40 from essentially losing possession in and around our penalty area.

I’m going to have to convince myself that it’s better to get beat most weeks playing this stylish and brave way looking to crack the genius level code for possession football than get beat most weeks looking like a poor no identity no spirit football team. Which is what can easily happen ( see last time around).

Apols if that sounded depressing. I’m positive about Saints and always will be but it does help if one’s expectations are in the right ball park!
Simply not getting relegated would be a massive result this year. 😇

That is a worry. It doesn’t matter who you have in goal if you try to keep the ball as near to your own goal as possible and as far away from the opposition’s then you’re going to concede a lot.
