If we go down by a point we could point to this game and say that McCarthy has cost us.

If we go down by a point we’ll have had a good season.

This squad is not good enough. Zero premier league level talent going forward.

Terrible Goalkeeper error and beyond lacklustre in the final third.

Everything in between that did okay today, probably better than expected. Thought we looked good even before they got the red card.

Hopefully that means even more so that we act upon the two/three glaring holes in the squad, but it feels like such a wasted opportunity today in terms of picking up some points.

Ultimately a frustrating defeat in the circumstances, but plenty of positives to take from the game for me. Upgrade the keeper and bring in a genuine centre forward / goal poacher and we'll be fine IMO.

Very poor last 30 minutes - Alcaraz has done more since he came on than any other attacking player.  SAA with a nice cameo but we are simply not good enough and have no attacking threat.

Edozie is utter tripe.

I think most of us didn't expect us to compete anywhere near as much, that was a lot better than expected.  Showed we can probably get a few wins against the bottom half teams.

Maybe if they go down to 10 men after 30 minutes too.

And they might need to score an own goal for us

We have tried to pass the ball in this half. The subs made us worse. Good moments in the first 45 and you could see just how riled up we made them but ultimately this has been a huge missed opportunity. BBD missed an easy header and Armstrong anonymous. Over an hour against 10 men and we couldn't score. Real lack of quality in our forward line.

If we don't get a new goalkeeper we have no chance.

Mixed emotions here. Fundamentally, we played well. In a game where we could have expected a very, very tough time, even with 11 v 11 we looked the better side.

But, the negatives of the style of play that have seen us do well cost us a point.

Will this prompt us to up our efforts to bring in a new 'keeper? Hopefully. But, as disappointing as this was today, it does leave me feeling more hopeful for the season ahead.

And, great debut for Sugs. Hope he is not injured.

If we play like that every game we'll stay up.  Newcastle defended brilliantly, and obvs we could have used a bit more quality up front.  But every player played well (McCarthy fcuk up apart).  Good to see SAA be aggressive and positive when he came on.  Would have liked to see the same from Dibling tbh.  Suga looked great as well, and disappointing he went off (hopefully a precaution).

Disappointing, but at the same time encouraging, result

P.s why the fcuk is Bruno always amazing against us?? What did we ever do to him?

Fantastic performance. They had one shot on target all match, and that was obviously an aberation.

We had three of four excellent chances and but for some back to the wall heroics and that aberration we could have come away from that having absolutely trounced a so called big side.

Massive credit to Martin and the lads. The folk playing PL for the first time all looked in their element. Need to follow it up with a win as soon as possible though.

My take is that we played well and were the better side against eleven men. The sending off should have meant we'd push on, put them to the sword and take the three points. Instead, we gift them a goal then huff and puff with no plan B and come away with nothing. Failing to get anything against ten men for 60 minutes uses up all the credit for playing well in the first 30 minutes. This is an unforgiving league and we were a soft touch today giving Newcastle 3 points on a plate.

What a load of reactionary tosh.

You’re absolutely right. Not scoring against 10 men for 60 minutes is an extremely positive start to a PL season. Unfortunately, most teams will have 11 for the whole game.

We were nailed on for relegation before a ball was kicked and guess what, we still are. No amount of pretty passing will change that.

Good-ish performance but there are going to be many games like this against mid-table sides. They'll nick a goal and be happy to let us keep the ball, because they know we don't do enough with it.

More quality (AM, both wings, striker?) needed if we're to stay up

Nailed on? Great. Why are you even on this forum right now then? Do something more productive with your time.

Gave a far better account of ourselves than I thought we had any right to against a very good team. AM and GK crucial to survival.

Did you miss that they had ten men for an hour?

Frustrating we couldn’t break 10 men down (we’ve got form for that, recall us failing to do it against NINE at the same venue a few seasons back) but I saw lots of positives there. We might have a chance. We absolutely need to fuck McCarthy off though that’s a point lost today due to him and there will be many more. We cannot afford it.

Some positives.  Not the pummelling I was expecting and Newcastle did not dominate even when they had 11 on the pitch.

Shame we couldn't convert more of the chances - had about 4 on target between 45 and 55 minutes?  Zero shots on target in the first half from what I saw.

We were better before the subs.

Really frustrating result today, one mistake has cost us. Apart from that it was a good performance where we controlled the game for large parts. But we've got something to build on going into next week.

Perfect illustration of why we’re nailed on for relegation. Utterly fucking toothless even against 10 men for 60 minutes.

And a manager who has no idea to change it up, same slow rigid shape the whole 2nd half, no movement, nothing, absolutely out of his depth, pissing around WONT work in epl with our players , it's not that hard to understand,  a shocking keeper who's laughably been given extra 2yrs yet still expected to play with his feet.... he can't... if he's our only choice work our tactics around that, it's not rocket science

So Keeper fuck up and no real quality in the final third as we thought.

Having said that the team probably played as well as they could but how many corners did smallbone put on for their centre half to head away.

Change the routine ffs.

First game of the season - we always lose

St James' Park - we never win

Eddie Howe as NUFC manager - always beats Saints

Macca in goal - guaranteed cock up

Playing 10 men - we hardly ever win

So everything went exactly as it should have done.

We were not disgraced or outclassed playing away to a team with CL pretensions, but the 2 things that are glaringly obvious were shown up in flashing neon signs ; MacCarthy is not a PL goalkeeper, and we don't create as many clear cut chances as our possession and territorial control should deliver.

At least. I don't think Newcastle wouldn't have played the second half the way they did at 0-0. They protected their 1-0 and challeneged us to break them down. Not sure they'd have settled with a point, at least not initially with the expectation they would win comfortably.
