The giveaway was bad enough to begin with, but what the actual fuck was that pathetic attempt to save the shot? He just flopped to his left.

For the love of God, please can we sign a new keeper before the end of the window. And I don't mean a stop-gap loan until Baz is fit again, I mean a new, competent number 1.

All of our good work pissed away in an instant by a player who shouldn't even still be at the club, let alone on the fucking pitch today.

The pass back isn’t a problem if somebody had pointed to him where to play it rather than straight back into 3 Newcastle players.

If he needs someone to tell him where to play it he should be sat at home doing a fucking crossword.

Well, fantastic performance. BUT.....

And anyone saying we overplayed or its "Russball" is a fucking mong. We've just taken the piss out of a top 6 challenger at their place for 45 minutes.

Look, we know McCarthy can't play it out from the back like a modern keeper. We adjusted for that at the end of last season. We need to do that again now and that includes not passing it back to him when that's the riskier option than turning around and passing forwards.

Stephens should not escape blame there.

Let's be honest, there is no one to blame but the club themselves. They've given a terrible keeper a new two year deal and made him number 1, with no obvious signs of us buying a new keeper any time soon. What an utter shit show.

So frustrating because we have been excellent until that McCarthy cock up, and even more frustrating as it wasn't a surprise to any Saints fan.

We can get something from this game. Come on lads.

Good job none of us warned how McCarthy’s shitness will cost us countless points and that the club has a clear blind spot about decent keepers. Oh

Is this the same McCarthy that was so sound at the end of last season that everyone is rubbishing or have we signed another one?

People seem to have been spooked because in a few practice matches he practiced doing a few things he's not very good at and found he's not very good at them  which is what practice matches are for, I thought.

So he won't do them in a league game, I hope.

I would venture that depends on whether or not we go back to 'pure' "Russball" or the scaled-down version we witnessed at the end of last season...? McCarthy is only following orders, after all...

You were saying @Tom & Gerry...? ;)

Goalkeeper should've been the first signing after FD and THB

Wasn't really hard to see, was it?

Played well until then but it's going to be plucky saints losing against 10 men at the end, we all know it

Silver lining - club's desire for a new keeper rapidly growing?

This would be my take from it. Surely to fuck if we were complacent enough not to act before that fuck up they will now?

Blessing in disguise… I expected nothing up here today anyway and I hope this pushes us even more to go and find a keeper.

However we won’t get a better opportunity ever they’ll have been down to 10 men for more than an hour so if it stays 1-0 it will sting.

Russball needs to be sacked off after the 44th minute everyone knows the importance of getting to half time with a cleansheet or without conceding.

So the exact thing everyone was expecting to happen, happened. At least it only took 40-odd minutes to show how easily the weak link in our game is going to be punished at this level.

Management had plenty of warning in pre-season about McCarthy. We all said if those mistakes happened in the Premier League we'd get punished. He can't play that role Russell FFS!

I think the club have buried their head in the sands because we simply can't afford to get a keeper in.

Talksport saying the Smallbone shot was going in as well.

McCarthy can’t play football.  So why force him to.  It’s absolute madness.

This is what annoys me, manager insists the players pass the ball, feel comfortable with it yet pick a keeper who can’t kick a fkin ball to save his life. It’s madness.

In fairness the pass from McCarthy was horrendous but we shouldn't be passing back to him in that circumstance. Stephens was further forward than the fucking newcastle player, just turn around and play it forward.

This. Stephens only has to turn outside and play the ball upfield. He surely knows by now that McCarthy is not a footballer. Totally sloppy and unnecessary.

That was the worst thing about that passage of play to me... Looked like he thought it was going wide and decided not to try and save it. Dire.

Stupid by McCarthy, but, he's playing as he's told. Playing out like that is daft and was/is always going to get us punished at this level. McCarthy has dealt with corners well and looked ok til then.

You can’t blame Martin or the rest of the team. The game to that point was perfectly played. That’s just fucking awful from Macca. Need a new keeper NOW.

You can blame the striker for missing a pretty simple header.

Apart from the horrendous Macca moment, that was very, very encouraging.

Clearly a need for a little more creativity, but still a very good and encouraging half.

Now the question is...... can we get something from the game?

Such a shame. We've been really good here in possession and the thing everybody saw coming has cost us yet again.

We need more chances created in the second half, as expected it's been all from the wing-backs. I'd get Dibling on ASAP.

Apparently SR didn't see it coming. There lies the problem, that and the insistance of playing suicide football in our own box.

Going to persevere though aren't they.

Is that their opinion or do they have tangible evidence? Looked like it was hitting the post at best from the various angles I saw.

Serves us right for being so passive after getting a one man advantage. Could even here Martin shouting "do something with it". Aribo needs to be quicker.

An extra man doesn’t help you if you’re only going to pass it around at the back. With an extra man we should be able to overload them somewhere on the pitch. That isn’t going to happen in our own half.

Fight in the tunnel

Newcastle player grabbing Bednarek by the throat and kicking off

Was it Joelinton? He was squaring up to Bednarek ahead of that terrible FK.

Missing a header doesn’t put you 1-0 down against 10 men.

The system isn’t changing, the personnel NEED to.

I haven’t seen a good angle of it but saw the replay and def looks like it was going wide.

Pay up for Ramsdale or Johnston or it’s going to be a long season. The outfield players have been superb and shown they can be competitive. Hopefully we can get a keeper in next week. I’d take 1-0 v ten man Newcastle away at half time. If saints can keep up pressure we can get a result here. Fuck Howe and Newcastle. COYR!

He shouldn’t need to be told where to pass it.

Really interesting strategy by Martin that half. KWP playing narrow... more midfield than wing-back.  And incredibly effective in that position. Overall, we've really stepped up our passing game. Fast, bolder, a lot more long passes included in there. It looks incredibly good.   Aribo playing better than I've ever seen him. We can't be scared out of this by the occasional mistake.

We miss bazunu, no doubt, but this is very promising for January when he is hopefully back.

And finally, after decades of watching, we finally have a player who knows to go down when you get headbutted.
