Nice to see that officially recognised that Tories broke Special Educational Needs. Although very depressing for the poor parents and kids suffering.

It may have, it may not.  The Tories brought in a tobacco and vapes bill in 2024 and it didn’t go this far, it said there would be more on the spot fines for retailers selling to the underage but no general ban. There was talk of bulking it up but it never progressed as we edged towards election.

Good policy this one IMO, goes to tackling underage smoking/vaping and also address the ridiculous concept of 5 millions e-cigs going in the bin every week.

SEND tribunal appeals launced are up thousands year on year. Appeal success rates are sky high as the original decision was wrong, although local authorities to be fair are skint. Not good.

That is true but it is also the case that many experienced SEND applicants know what to write on applications to get it through. Effectively they are competing with each other for the pot of money and it incentivises exagerrations on the application to get further ahead in the queue. It is true that more support is needed though.

Looks like this man is for turning. If accurate, not sure it's the best way to govern the country but in fairness I'd rather they junked stupid ideas whatever the reason for doing so.

All British governments have been floating ideas in the media then acting upon the feedback for decades.

The clever bit is not doing it with major policies, a change of direction on big things looks weak, listening to people on dull issues is sensible, and always has been.

I notice this morning I saw that Reeves was going for another £20Bn tax hike on top 'for the NHS' what a load of bollox and if you lot believe that!! Just the usual cover the tax with the NHS that people cant argue with. You could spend 20bn extra a day and it wont get better. It needs knocking down and starting again, so we can get the money spent correctly. I love the NHS but when I see the staff standing around by the nurse station doing nothing at the General it is hard to feel it is not efficient.

The NHS needs reform for sure - but it needs to sensible and progressive - you won't fix it in one foul sweep.

In my opinion it needs a full process evaluation, issue identification and root cause analysis done to identify where money can be best saved - this is both system and process improvement.

It’s going to need both reform and a lot more money, with the aging population as it is. Reform takes time so it makes sense to increase the funding to try and clear the backlog the Tories left us with.

You never know what the bloke said to provoke him. He might have taunted him about employer’s NI contributions going up and the betrayal if the working man

Not really. The first video of him staggering around pissed up stating “you won’t threaten me again” emerged yesterday morning. There’s absolutely no doubt every single party in the country would have done exactly the same once the CCTV emerged. So it wasn’t particularly quick. 
 

Let’s see how his violent disorder is dealt with…

The NI employers increase is the biggest risk - not just to slightly bigger SMEs and larger firms, but also charities and universities. The extra cost for the latter will be £100m alone and will lead to further job losses in that sector.

That said, Reeves was left an appalling situation, unacceptable, and indefensible, by a party that used to have a reputation for economic competence which was trashed by first Boris and then for generations by Liz Truss.

Finally, as a Remainer, today’s situation wasn’t inevitable but Boris, Farage, Banks and Putin didn’t tell you this was the reality of losing several % of GDP through nearly the hardest possible Brexit. Worst of all, it has actually made taking back control of the UK’s borders harder, not easier.

Lots of positive reactions on here to the budget with what will be the highest tax burden in UK history. I'll be interested to see if this spurs economic growth as ultimately that will imo decide if Labour wins the next election or not.

Ain't that the truth. What we've had today though is refreshing honesty, and a clear explanation that we couldn't afford what we were doing. That said, the budget doesn't really increase the cost to the average punter so in reality they are getting something for nothing. I was dreading armageddon today, and although a massively increased NI bill for my staff isn't ideal, I'm relieved and actually rather pleased with it.
