You what? Beautiful headed assist for their 5th yesterday.

I agree but wtf was THB doing, nearly took out Suga and probably the reason he fucked his header back, very similar to when THB clattered into Wood allowing Duran to score against us. I've defended THB in the past but that was one of the worst performances of a cb I've ever seen, maybe being in a 3 they don't know who's doing what

THB is not a premier league defender. No doubt he could be one day - at the moment he's nowhere near the required level.

The fact that Bednarek is still our best centre back after these last 3-4 years is laughable.

Everyone around me was calling for manning to be on the pitch.. shows where we are.. to be fair at least manning appears to be bothered

Another who will look decent in the Championship no doubt

I’m not so sure he will. I can’t ever remember a saints player making as many silly mistakes that led to a goal as Sugawara has. The fact he’s only made a handful of appearances is even worse.

Hopefully he goes back to Europe in the summer. We've had plenty of good full-backs over the years - KWP on his day, Bertrand, Shaw, Clyne, Bale, Bridge. Probably an obvious one I'm missing. He's not one of them.

This, he'll go to the Dutch or French league and be reasonable. Everyone will say "shouldn't have let him go" as his 20 year old cart horse replacement leaves players unmarked and heads the ball into their goal bound path ...

He's sh*te. One calamity after another. What the f**k he thought he was doing for Brentford's fifth I can't fathom.

He was all over the place on Saturday. Someone needs to go through the basics with him and show him where he should be defensively. We don't mind him going forward as a wing back, but make sure you get back quickly. He was ambling like the rest of the team.

Started great first couple of games but has been so poor for a few months now - but i’m still really surprised he hasn’t been the wing back of choice under Juric because I don’t see the intention with Bree out there. If you play 5 at the back you surely need the wing backs to provide the width and attacking support, Bree won’t be doing that. I also think THB is just as culpable for the header to the Brentford player on Saturday, why does he always get so close to our players with the ball - same issue for the Villa goal a few weeks back, follows the ball like a 10 year old.

I genuinely think that he has something about him, but I think that even Lionel Messi in his prime would struggle to look good in our current team/situation.

Makes Olivier Bernard look like Cafu.

He’s giving Steve Baker a run for his money in our worst ever top flight XI and might well have succeeded in dislodging him. Only thing he’ll succeed in all season.

I’ll raise you a ‘Lee Todd’.

(or was he a left back ?)

Lee Todd was a left back. Jones paid £850k for him, sold to Bradford 12 months on for £250k and only played 15 games there, after 10 for Saints. Legend at Stockport but although Dave Jones was tidy in the transfer market, not one of his better deals.

Topical to today, he did play the full 90 in our 3-2 win at Anfield (David James decapitating Matt Oakley near enough for a penalty).

Yes, you’re correct of course, he was a LB, or at least meant to be.

I’ll withdraw him from the RB discussion then, and will bring him out again when we have a Larios themed ‘midget left backs’ thread

only another three years left in his contract....

Perhaps he can find his feet in the championship.

I recall we had similar debates about Yoshida being a mistake a game player when he first arrived. I don’t think he made the glaring errors that Sugawara has made but was playing in a more confident team with better players.

I’m not writing Sugawara off yet, may be okay -going forward anyway - next season but on showing this season it doesn’t bode well

His touch and passing have been very poor. no where near the level I expected from him. Defensively he's not been great either. The championship is more forgiving, so he may look OK next season, but loads of improvement needed.

Not unless you attach them to his arms.

I can't even begin to get my head round why he thought that was a good idea. You might have been able to get away with that in pre-VAR times, but there's zero chance VAR will look at that and say it was accidental. It's just guaranteed to give a goal away really.

Brainless idiot.

There must be very little football knowledge at the club to continue purchasing players of this quality.

Another move on for a loss candidate.

Have to agree , we seem to keep buying duds ever since the loony tunes took us over .

You kind of want to really like Yuki as he's that sort of character, but I just cannot ignore his defending - he just can't defend full stop, there's no argument to be had. All the basics he's bad at, positioning, awareness, defensive intelligence - that can't be coached, that's either there or not. He's an awful defensive full back and that will never change. I can't think of any worse we've had than him, I'll have to go back to maybe the likes of Lloyd James at Championship level to come close.

Another fail for the scouting team that's for sure.

This trend pre-dates the current owners. Elyonoussi, Hoedt, Carillo, Diallo, etc stand out in our long list of failures. Nothing new.

Sadly I agree. Lloyd wasn’t especially quick either, whereas Yuki has a turn of pace so Jon Otsemobor is probably the comparator I’d make. Both quite lively getting forward, Yuki can also put in a lovely cross but defensively you draw the curtains as disaster looms.

Operative word being ‘handy’

If he can get down quickly to his left then perhaps there’s a GK in the making.

One thing that appears to have gone unnoticed is how he played the ball out after his little transgression of the rules.
Presumably thinking he’d got away with his arm control of the ball he then played it back into a key danger area. That for me was as ‘knobheaded’ as trying to control the ball with his arm.
