Nathan Wood - Official: Signs Four Year Contract

Recommended Posts

Swansea fans on their forums seem happy to have got rid of him but at 22 for low money with his attributes when he'll be back up for us, doesn't sound like bad business long term.

for £2.5-3m, you cannot really complain about it. Is he going to be better than Lyanco? I'd be utterly flabbergasted if he isn't. That's all that matters really, he adds depth to the squad.

Another young English player too - a really strong British core through the side. THB, Edwards, Wood, Taylor, KWP, Downes (hopefully), Smallbone, Armstrong - and then a sprinkling of young English talent in Edozie, Charles etc.

I think we've sorted out the back 4 area - now need to see some focus on the attack, that's what will keep us up at the end of the day. We'll concede goals whoever plays at the back for us, so we just need to make sure we're potent enough down the flanks and up top (We're nowhere near good enough at the mo). Excited to see who is up next, we seem to be moving rapidly.

I'm gonna be the miserable bastard.

I think we're signing great football league players but not premier league ones. My concerns about Martin not respecting the gulf in quality between Prem and championship looking more and more valid with every signing.

So far, I think we're coming straight back down with little fight.

So far, I’m kind of with you. Taylor should be the bottom end of the quality we’re trying to recruit, not the (so far) best of the lot. It’s not panic button time because there’s plenty of window to go but Lallana, McCarthy, Wood…. Eehhhh.

It's incredibly impressive to write off a young players ability to make the step up to the premier league before they have played 1min of a game, holgate was an established PL CB who couldn't play in the championship .

As we see every season great coaching is more impactful that great players, Brentford have established themselves in the premier league buy young talent from championship and unfancied leagues.

I get it, especially as there’s a noticeable lack of quality in our side and we may be losing KWP and Bednarek, and relying on AA and Smallbone to have a good seasons, neither who have yet proved they’re Premier League quality. It definitely looks like we have one eye on the season after next. That said I’m excited by the Edwards signing and I do think we have a lot more to come to improve the quality of the first team once a few more outs are confirmed. Signing Downes is key but there is a lot of work to be done yet.

Shea Charles is English, born in Manchester. Chose to represent Norn Iron because his Mother is from there.

Smallbone is also English, born Basingstoke, but represents Ireland, again through his Mother.

Did you see Holgates games in the Prem? Using him as an example is pretty desperate.

It’s not before he’s played one minute of a game though, he’s played many minutes of over 70 games for Swansea and their fans aren’t too impressed, even a league below. That’s what’s concerning.

Lots of potential, lots of attributes to be coached, the kind of young player we were spending £10-12 million on from Man City with less experience and more risk.  Current squad building is interesting and pragmatic. Will need proven quality in key positions, particularly GK and up front, but Championship a better bargain basement for depth than price hiked Euromart.

PL level players should excel in the championship. Wood didn't excel there. He's plainly back up though, and I can't imagine he'll offer any less then Lycano.

Had his beat season(s) under Martin and was wanted by Arsenal at this time. As we know, Martin is a system manager and certain players play better under him (Downes), so I'm happy.

If Arsenal had wanted him, then he’d have been their player by now.

He may have been linked with them, and they may have watched him, but for whatever reason they didn’t take the plunge.
Can only hope it’s a case that the Arsenals etc want to see how he does in making the step up, and they come back in when he’s in the £40m+ bracket

At the price we’re paying, probably worth the risk rather than paying the ‘Big Club Premium’ for the privilege of taking one of their cast offs.

To be fair to Dragan this board appear to be learning, learning on the job, but learning all the same.

Wood was highly rated a year or two back under Martin, but hasn't been standout the last season or so since he departed, so would be interesting to see if he can get back up to top form and progress. Not expecting him to start, but heard rumours that Bednarek might be off, which would be an issue without an experienced replacement - even if we do go 3 at the back, we can't really have Harwood-Bellis, Wood and Edwards all playing who are all young and none of them been in the Premier League before.

Hopefully they're not assuming Stephens will be in with two others, as we did try to replace him a couple of years ago for a reason. I don't mind Stephens, but his lapses in concentration do get punished at this level. Heard the same on Wood, but hopefully with a bit of time on his side, he will cut that out and become a good player for us.

They made mistakes and learnt from them. Nothing wrong with that at all. Look at the number of big clubs who mess up at board level, fortunately for them their failure is not getting into Europe whereas for clubs our size it can equal relegation.

The signings we are making are the types who would likely stay with us if we get relegated. If they do we'd have a very strong championship squad.

Flourished under him! Haven't all of RMs teams let in a shit load of goals as he can't set up a defence

Defence did alright during the playoffs when it really mattered.....

That's OK then as long as we have 3 good defensive performances out of next 20 epl games we'll be happy , gotcha

You said he cant set up a defence, but he clearly can. Our record with a back 3, which we may employ next season, was pretty good

We don't need to have a huge step up in quality - we just need to be the fourth worst team. That's the goal for next season.

Managerless Leicester and Ipswich are obviously in the mix to go down, Wolves, Forest, Everton, Brentford didn't exactly light up the league last season either. A number of teams will have points deductions too.

We don't need to light up the league, and I think our cup game against Liverpool with a weakened side shows that we've got the tools to give it a decent go.

Leicester have appointed Steve Cooper.

I stand corrected, although I'm not sure that's an improvement on being managerless.

Ipswich are signing Greaves and Philogene from Hull are they preparing for championship again or like us just signing good prospects?

I wish we were Ipswich.
