Ronnie Edwards

Never seen or heard of the lad, but well thought if it seems. I can only see him featuring in a 3 though. He's 5'11 and loses nearly as many aerial duels as he wins. Great passing stats though, and with 2 more dominant partners, he could give us something. Really interesting signing, and hopefully he can adapt to the PL.

He's honestly a really talented young defender, think John Stones when he was nabbed from Barnsley. I think Edwards is a little older, but it's the most similar comparison I can think of in terms of the rise and type of player.

He will go right to the top. Having two exciting young English CB's at the club is a really healthy situation to be in.

I've always been a big fan of Ronnie Edwards, appreciate I've probably seen a bit more of him/heard more about him than others on here - but to nab him is really good for us.

Smart signing - it’s a risk as most transfers from a lower league are but it’s a risk worth taking. Other Prem clubs have been sniffing around and he seems to have all the tools to succeed. Sure he’s not the tallest as CBs go but plenty of CBs have been a success without hitting 6’, it’s all in the reading of the game.

Welcome on board.

His height is quoted on some sites as being 6' 1"  though Wikipedia has him 5' 11".

He looked as tall as Russ in one of rhe videos I saw earlier., I'm pretty certain Russ isn't 5 11

Never seen or heard anything about him, what is everyone basing their opinions on? You all can't have seen many league one games last season?

Seen alot of him in the championship, that was enough for me to be convinced.

I tell women I’m 6’1” but I’m actually 5’11” and a half. Ok that’s a lie, I don’t talk to women.

Transfermrkt has him as exactly 6’, Wiki says 5’11”. Either way not the tallest as CB’s go but as long as he’s committed, quick and reads the game well, he’s got all the attributes to do well in the Prem. THB, Jan and Wood are 6’2” so we will have some height there.

It may only be an inch or 2 but every inch matters - amirite ladies!?

Des Walker was a similarly diminutive 5ft 11ins and established a hell of reputation as a ball playing centre half on his way to sixty England caps. Let’s hope Ronnie steps up alongside THB, looking forward to seeing him in a three.

...we signed him from City's academy as an 18 year old? How are they comparable.

Because you can see both are levels above both current players ability in the team.

Is it a risk? Let's say we get relegated, he's either performed well so goes for a profit or we keep him in the championship where he will probably be more than capable. I'd say a risk would be something like trying to get ABK to play for us instead.

I've probably seen/heard of him a little more than most, as I know someone quite well who is an avid posh fan. He raved about him ever since they signed him, I've seen him a few times and you can see why.

A proper silky CB, moves with the ball effortsly, very technical - totally wasted in L1. He is one of those players who is good enough to do that double jump of leagues. I think we'll see a fair bit of him in the PL. I'm a big fan of him, it just needed someone to take that punt and a £3m punt is nothing in this day and age - glad it's us, I can assure you we've stolen a march on a few others with this one. He had scouts from Spurs, Brighton, Leipzig watching him last season to name just a few.

I'm still smarting from Charlie Wayman buggering off the Preston North End. It takes a while for these things to settle down before we adapt to new signings.

Insane signing

I came here just to check this. Glad you've cleared it up for me.

In related matters: how fit is his mum?

I'd say all transfers are a risk if you think about it unless you are prepared to spend money on someone like Mo Salah. Even someone like Rickie Lambert was a risk at the time (just an example). Ings was a risk because of his injuries at the price we paid but that turned out OK (also just an example). A CB jumping two divisions to play in the Prem for the first time I'd say qualifies as a risk, even with the attributes he has and praise he gets. However it is definitely a good risk both because of his age and his price and it is definitely one I'm glad we've taken.

I agree this (and the Wood transfer) bode us well for next summer, either they power us to safety, we make money from them or we have good CBs ready for a Championship season. Good decision from the club.

I'm 6'2" standing up, and 6'4" lying down, make of that what you will.

When I lie down, I'm a foot tall. And when I lie down and get an erection, I'm still a foot tall. I'm like Ken from Barbie and Ken.

Fabio Cannavaro was only 5'9. Had a decent'ish career.

It's bloody great signing new players. You get that tinge of excitement that you may have signed the next Saints legend, but obviously with slight trepidation that the player won't cut it.

I'm not sure he is super quick, but if we play with three centre backs that will prevent him being exposed. Really hope we have found a gem here.

1) Or the worry they'll be flogged off for big bucks after a season and you never get to enjoy them properly

2) Possibly why we're also looking to bring Wood on board - for pace.

Watching that video it does indeed look as if he has a good football brain and reads the game well. He seems to often be in the right place at the right time. I think we are full now on the CB position, but I am really worried that RM thinks AM and Baz are enough for a PL season. I think that could still be our undoing.

I'd be even more worried that he thinks Macca and Lumley are enough for half the season personally.
