Yeah he has, but if you go back to 2018/2019 the most consistent factor with our awful defence has been Bednarek. Bar a couple of purple patches here and there, he's been involved in it all. Both 9-0's, the 5-0's, 6-0's etc. +60 goals conceded in every season he's been a consistent part of it, I include last season in that as well.

He's definitely redeemed himself professionally since his stomp off to Villa, but he is one of the reasons we leak goals as he's so incredibly limited.

It's a pretty low bar. He's had Stephens, Yoshida, Hoedt, Vestergaard, Salisu, Lyanco and ABK as competition.

Yep, very true. Our CB recruitment is leading the way in crapness.

Only we can go from Fonte and VVD to Yoshida and Stephens less than a year later. The Southampton Way of doing things differently I guess.

And yet, the Stephens-Yoshida partnership under Puel was probably the last time we looked defensively solid. 

Obviously not at the quality of what went before, mind.

Didn't Juric say that Bednarek turned down a large offer during January, so someone must rate him ( assuming it's true) ?

THB has been a disappointment and appears a bit overweight to me and at times it looks like hes running through treacle.

Like a lot of the squad he's struggled with the pace and power in the PL

Most of the team look as if they are running through treacle. That's when they aren't standing still. It would be interesting to see what their training sessions consist of.

Don't think he's increased his stock that much this season.

Always liked his attitude. Last season, when he had time on the ball, he could see a pass and seemed to cover well. This season, the game in the premier league the game is faster and he's not had time to make his floaty passes or get back in to position and has looked off the pace. Don't know with the right fitness regime  if he can physically get quicker (he looks to be carrying an extra few pounds) but I'd like him to stay.

Although all three will most likely leave, Fernandes, Ramsdale and Dibling are the only three players I'd be keen to try to keep hold of for a season next year. Everyone else including THB have bkotted their copybooks for me and I'm unconvinced that any of them can play in theprem.

It would need to be a minimum of £25mil I reckon. We signed him for £20 million and having won an England cap since, had a season (albeit in a terrible side) in the Premier League, and us knowing how good he is in the Championship, they'd be no point selling for a loss or the same we bought him for.

£35-40m, England cap, still young for a CB, and City probably have a sell on clause. West Ham wouldn’t stress about our season, they will know 5 at the back doesn’t suit him and you need pace alongside him. John Terry wasn’t the quickest over ten yards so doesn’t stop CBs succeeding in the right structure.

I think the £30-35m Joachim Andersen went for in the summer is a good benchmark for what we should expect for THB, with the added English tax.

Yep, 100%. West Ham and Villa are shopping at that £30-50m level for first choice centre backs, Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford £20-35m. Not hard to see why paying £20m for THB without a high quality loan signing alongside him instead of kids for the future hasn’t worked. Much as I like Ronnie Edwards, it’s for next season and beyond. We didn’t use our loans well at all.

25 would do it I reckon you're correct. We won't have a strong negotiating hand after relegation.

Depends how much the other assets go for. If there’s an auction early on for say Dibling that may change the picture, or Fernandes. Ramsdale will be a late August sale I reckon when a PL side’s first choice gets injured/starts badly. But if we don’t get an early sale then THB’s hand improves.

That's probably true. I could see us getting a Dibling sale in early for say £60 million and then driving a harder bargain for the others. I expect all to go eventually but hopefully we identify what we need early.

Must admit, I can't see us getting anywhere near £60m for Dibling. My guess (and it is a guess) is more like £30m for a teenager who has got a lot to learn and frankly looks a bit cumbersome.

As to THB (who also looks a bit lardy), I'd be happy if he stays but offers over £25m will be given serious consideration.

I'd say given inflation, the fact he's English and a youngster who has been one of our only bright sparks this season I'd be expecting 40 million as a minimum. Maybe I'm over inflating it and 60 probably is a stretch.

Man City have a buy back clause, not sure much but that should be the starting price for any negotiations with any teams.

 

West Ham are known for overpaying anyway so I suspect they'd be willing to stump up £40M plus

Just going to point out that West Ham paid £40m for Max Kilman last summer. 27, no England caps and not particularly great, dependable.

Considering we bought THB for £20m, no way should we be selling for a loss. I'd probably sell for anything over £30m.

I don’t think he’s shite overall and can be PL level, but has been disappointing this season. Certainly not comfortable as part of a back 5, but with proper DMCs in front of him screening, and some pace with him he could be a good PL centre half. I don’t think he’s that sluggish but partnering Bednarek who isn’t the quickest and gets caught out of position plus the lack of midfield screen is a brutal combination. Adding the pace of Wood didn’t seem to help THB (eg Villa mix up) and Wood isn’t ready yet to be part of a PL back 4.

Put Romeo in front of him and he’d have been fine.

He's contracted until 2028 which makes our negotiating hand as strong as it gets for a relegated club. Who knows what's in his contract though.

Unless he has a relegation release, we still hold all the cards, but then it's down to our financial situation. God knows what that looks like, but in the summer of 2023 we seemed to set significant valuations on players and then seemed to stick by them.

The TSP on YouTube reckoned our financial situation was better as the (mostly) crap Rasmus signed in January 2022 has rolled over on the 3 year basis for PSR plus the non-Lavia transactions from summer 2022, which was a restriction last time. So no talk of stupid spending but that there would be more than last time and selling valuations would be stuck to even more so. 

If Dibling and Fernandes, the two most in demand, go early for good fees, the club can get maximum for THB or even hold onto him.

Yes, the one thing SR have done ok with was holding a line on their  valuations at the end of the 22/23 season.   Lavia, Tino and JWP all going for the “right money”.  Dibling is the obvious first saleable asset to cash in on, even if some of the shine has come off lately.   Fernandes should attract a sizeable fee, though whatever he goes for it’s likely to be a “bargain” given the scope for further improvement.  Would that then provide a chance to keep THB to help the promotion push.   I suspect anything north of 25 million will be too tempting for SR.

Surely Ramsdale will be in greater demand than Fernandes.
