Another member of our 1976 FA Cup winning team is selling their medal, this time Ian Turner.  Turner kept us in that final in the jittery first half with reaction saves from Gordon Hill and Gerry Daly. 71 now, I hope he achieves a high price for it.  Pre auction bidding already at £11k - https://bidlive.grahambuddauctions.co.uk/auctions/8939/srgrah10072/lot-details/21134175-05f5-4069-b5a6-b18100f60432

He worked for Exxon mobile in Fawley refinery on a very high salary & on plant turnarounds still has a role there ..I doubt he’s struggling for funds ..

I worked with him briefly there in the late 80s early 90s on a couple of the big projects, when Esso were investing in the plant. Quiet affable bloke.

Great stuff.  I was on a survey round by one of the big vessels with a couple of jocks one time and Ian Turner was working on a pipeline to the side of where we were, about 8 to 10 yards away. First time I'd seen him at Fawley, and I recognised him immediately, but the other two had no reason to.  He called over 'can you lob me over that tape mate' (big roll of duct tape on a bench). I obliged, and it bounced once rolled along the ground and went straight through his legs, perfect nutmeg.  He smiled, but had clearly lost a bit of form from 76 ;)

I also briefly worked with Ian in the Petrochemical industry in the early 80,s. Remember standing around a coffee vending machine next to him and bizarrely Martin Chivers brother, John who was strikingly very similar in appearance to Martin.

Quite surprised to hear Ian is still working at 72,I assume not still as a pipefitter.

I know his nephew (by marriage) - Don't worry, he isn't struggling financially. Don't know what his reasons for selling it is but it isn't that.

Ended up at 15k

Well done Ian Turner! I was there that special day on May 1st 1976.

Also a really interesting website looking at all the football lots that went to auction and gives you what they made.

Yes, decent sports auction site and seems the go to for the ex Saints players. Thought he might get around £18-20k as key role in final. Hope the club have bought it as relatively small beer for them and plenty of space in trophy cabinet even with the big playoff pot in it 😊
