skintsaint Posted 6 July, 2024 Posted 6 July, 2024 Another painful watch but still in it so can't complain too much. Dutch will be tough but hopefully we keep that formation and play a bit better.
SaintsBarry74 Posted 6 July, 2024 Posted 6 July, 2024 Southgate’s murder ball will sort out the Dutch.
Jimmy_D Posted 6 July, 2024 Posted 6 July, 2024 Ouch. Pedri apparently out of the semis and the final if they get there with a stretched ligament.

Despite so many people saying that Southgate needed to change things up, he stuck to the same formula. He will argue that it has gotten us this far but luck rather than skill and good tactical decisions is responsible for that. Expect more of the same in the semi! He didn’t stick to the same formula at all, he changed the shape!

That's quite an understatement! Prior to Southgate almost all England managers have viewed penalties as a pointless exercise to prepare for, considering them as just a lottery, and didn't bother to practice ("What's the point, you can't recreate the pressure of a real match", "Ok lads, it's penalties. Who fancies taking one?") The only exception was Venables, who had 5 players prepared (which led to our only success, against Spain). Unfortunately he didn't consider the possibility that it could go beyond a 5th penalty, and we duly lost to Germany (ironically Southgate missing the 6th). If England had been as well prepared as we were today then we probably would've had more major trophies than that solitary one 50+ years ago.

Colinjb Posted 7 July, 2024 Posted 7 July, 2024 England's run so far reminds me a bit of Portugal in 2016. Just doing enough. Hopefully, a good omen. 3
Whitey Grandad Posted 7 July, 2024 Posted 7 July, 2024 My son has just alerted me to Jordan Pickford's water bottle. It had all the Swiss players on it with their usual penalty preferences. Some papers are calling it a 'cheat sheet'. I'm not. https://www.goal.com/en/lists/akanji-dive-left-jordan-pickford-water-bottle-england-goalkeeper-penalty-heroics-euro-2024-semi-finals/blt107183bc0958aeee

Same was said about us for times last season. Came good in the end though, -especially the approach in the play offs- hope it does for England over the next two games

Saint Gifford Posted 7 July, 2024 Posted 7 July, 2024 Good chance of another Final. Need to pull the rabbit out of the hat against probably Spain though. IMO this tournament for every team is up there as one of the most boring, lack of any quality euros for a long time. Turkey, Austria, Georgia could come away pleased. Apart from that utter b?,.cks. I guess the record books won’t show that however, just whoever wins it. Come on England……….

sadoldgit Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Didn’t see that coming! Spain should have been one up but missed a similar header. Game on!
Jimmy_D Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 France likely to be extremely difficult to break down now! Have I missed Cucurella doing something? Crowd seem to be right on his back?
Jimmy_D Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Oh! German fans over the handball penalty that wasn’t given against him apparently, been a big part of the German reporting after they went out.
Toussaint Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Cucurella is nowhere near the required standard's for this level of football imo 1
whelk Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 BBC commentary team shocking. Fawning from the first whistle
S-Clarke Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 What a fecking goal that was, amazing. No stopping that. This has been a great game so far, Spain have been miles better.
whelk Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Put money Yamal more likely to take Messi’s crown than Mbappe

Jimmy_D Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Ok, maybe not so difficult to break down (Although that is due to two incredible goals.)

Jimmy_D Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 Interesting game now, Spain likely to keep attacking you’d think, but they’ve also looked vulnerable on the break, perhaps not surprisingly with the players they have out.

Baird of the land Posted 9 July, 2024 Posted 9 July, 2024 German fans are idiots (holding a grudge over a penalty appeal that was a pile of nonsense) love watching Spain, if there’s any justice they’ll win the tournament.
