spyinthesky Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Big shout out to Mark Dennis for his rousing pre match speech. Really got the crowd fired up and didnt go down too well with the Baggies fans as MD was a Birmingham player before joining Saints. MLT also hit the spot at half time when he suggested that WBA hadnt come to play football after their time wasting efforts first half. 17
Elmore Saint Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Mark Dennis. Absolute legend. I’m told that the only thing scarier than him in his pomp was Mrs Dennis!! 4 1
OldNick Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 I wonder if there is any footage of his speech anywhere

Dimond Geezer Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Loved him as a player, and after last night, love him even more as an ex-player, proper rabble rousing stuff. He was the original "Psycho" long before Stuart Pearce nicked his moniker, as hard as nails with an impressive collection of red cards. He was a classy left back, but overlooked for England because of his discipline issues. I have 2 abiding memories, one is the massive scar down his thigh, the result of surgery to repair a dead leg IIRC, the other is him sprinting the diagonal of the pitch to bail out one his teammates who had got himself involved in some fisticuffs. Fortunately for MD one of our players, maybe Case or Cockerill, stopped him halfway, saving him from another, almost certain, red card. 4
Wade Garrett Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 As well as being a hot-headed character, he was a very good defender. 8
LuckyNumber7 Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 As a player he's before my time but he was brilliant last night. Even though I barely heard a word he said.
Saintsmick Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Mark Dennis was a guest speaker at a corporate day I went to last season at st Mary’s, I spent ten minutes at the bar telling a young lad (16/17 yrs old) how great a player MD was, saying he was a legend and hard as nails. MD finished his speech and walked towards us, the lad looked at him and said “ grandad this bloke reckons you’re a legend” he hugged me gave me a kiss and said thanks mate appreciate that. Made my day.😂 6 2
washsaint Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Some great memories of MD at Saints - and the protests when Chris Nicholl suspended him. Also remember him driving his car round the car park at the pub looking to knock people down! Absolute character, nothing like the iodine 'characters' in todays media age
Turkish Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 What a player. If his disciple was better he’d have been an England international. Kenny Samson was a very good left back but no better than prime Mark Dennis 3
Fabrice29 Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 That behind the scenes footage Saints uploaded today has shown him up. 3
trousers Posted 19 May, 2024 Posted 19 May, 2024 Somewhat disappointingly, I thought this was going to be a thread about Rory Reid's cat...

Badger Posted 19 May, 2024 Posted 19 May, 2024 Dennis remains in my view the best LB I’ve seen in my time following Saints (1960’s). Many will make a case for Bridge, but MD met every criteria of being able to defend, tackle (sometimes over enthusiastic) , and cross the ball ( remember the Wallace overhead kick). Cult figure in his time with us. 2

Absolute character, nothing like the iodine 'characters' in todays media age In hindsight his dispute with Chris Nicholl and subsequently the club, is the blot on Dennis time with us. I didn’t think protests got going as they might have done as the next home game with protests planned was postponed (as I recall) due to a waterlogged pitch. I arrived in a pub in Southampton after a two hour drive to be told it was off. At the time I suspected Chris Nicholl had been up all night witn a hose. It was unfortunate as it came to a head after a press article and the episode meant we sold one of our better players and it damaged Nicholl’s popularity for a while.
