There was never going to be a lap of honour tonight, they did that in the Stoke game.

But i agree, the pitch invasion cringed the fuck out of me. Absolute tinpot, it's the sort of thing Plymouth Argyle or Rotherham would do if they reached a playoff final - but for us to do it I was pretty embarrassed.

Is it really, it's just a expression of joy. My 13 year old went on and will remember it all his life.

MOTM over both legs: Alex McCarthy.

One thing for certain, he gives confidence to the defence and comes for what a keeper should.

He gives us a little more stability and has maybe forced us to look for a longer ball on occasions which pins the other team back a little more.

It was a controversial call to throw him in over Lumley, but seems to have been a wise one. (So far)☺️

That was great, atmospheres like that make for memorable games. Change of position for us today. Behind the dugout and below 'fan for life' Sunak. Fair go to him though, he was up junping around.

What amazed me was the amount of activity on the bench. They scrutinise everything. When Downes took a knock on the 1st half it was a hive of activity, but they all knew their job. Never really seen that before.

A good win and a strong performance. Downes,   Smallbone, and Armstrong were excellent.

Stephens did well pretty solid and pushed us forward and made some good passes.  However major drawback is that if he is bypassed by a player, he doesn't really have the pace to get back.

However not a night for whining. Have to do it all again on Sunday.

Yeah, saints noticed they should be much closer to the pitch because bro was lobbing rockets last week.

Bro had seriously solid length on him

impressive

Downes and Smallbone both exceptional tonight, their effort on and off the ball won us the game.

id love to give Smallbone man of the match for his goal and contribution but Downes was just so so good.

shout outs to McCarthy for some good saves and solid keeping. Highlighting how far Bazunu still has to come.

Bednarek has been consistently reliable, easily in the top 3-4 performers this season.

Armstrong gets the plaudits but so many around him doing great work.

really happy with the result.

scenes at the end with fans on the bit, especially those goading the West Brom fans was cringingly embarrassing

State of it. Flat caps ... sigh ... anyway, awesome match, very very very managed and controlled, we've seen a very different Russel and Saints the last 3 matches. Now let's finish the job!

Everybody did, it was even the topic of debate by the sky pundits and was also mentioned during the in game commentary.

Incident in the Chapel/Itchen corner, what happened? Was watching from the Itchen and one ‘security officer’ was very heavy handed and aggressive in the situation.

This evening has been the prefect gift 😊 - a controlled and clinical when we needed to be. First half we were patient and that enabled us to push on in the second half and win comfortably. Superb goals from both Smallbone and Adam Armstrong 😊 Adam's second, a penalty was expertly despatched. Flynn Downes was just phenomenal tonight 😊 My MOTM. He is just so so good and the run to set up Arma was top.  Smallbone was class 😊, he was everywhere tonight and such a good goal from him to get us in front. Arma was great, his work rate is immense and two goals 😊 Brooks was class 😊, lovely interplay with Will for the first. He should have had a penalty too, how on earth did the ref not give that! The ref was shocking tonight. Jack was immense tonight 😊, proper captain and leader and it was his run and pass which led to us finally getting a penalty. Aribo is a delight to watch 😊 such a physical presence. KWP, THB, Bednarak and Fraser brilliant too 😊 along with McCarthy who is showing his class and experience in goal 😊 Such a commanding presence and over both legs has made numerous saves to keep us in a good position. Absolutely brilliant from RM and the coaching staff, get in! 😊

Fantastic.

We made West Brom look very limited throughout, they were clearly a threat from set pieces but we handled it.

McCarthy was awesome I thought. Probably top Championship level was always him but I felt he was that extra barrier West Brom had to get past throughout the game and settled the defense.

Massive credit to all the defense (Bednarek was absolutely fantastic tonight) - probably the easiest watch for a while.

Midfield we won it - controlled throughout the game, kept pressure off the anyway excellent defense.

Jack Stephens - our Captain. No misplaced passes and handy in that defense, especially on set pieces - credit where due. I can't quite work out if he was part of a back 3, 2 or a DM but for the first time it worked, he was very good on the ball and gives us some much needed height.

Credit to the boss

Best day out ever at St Marys. Got a bit too close to the Ted Bates statue early on so for a while, everything was just red smoke. Inside the Block 43 concourse, there was a Smallbone looky likey creating great banter and the atmosphere in the ground was superb.

With regards to the team, you start to realise that with Stuart Armstrong out, Che out, Stewart out our attacking options are very limited. The defense were excellent, the midfield were excellent, Manuel Neuer in goal (apart from one moment) was excellent, but up front AA can't play in the centre. Reading back through this thread, I think Coalman spotted there were times when no-one was in the middle for the cross. But the gulf between 3rd/4th and 5th and 6th in this league showed in the end. They didn't have much to offer.

Regarding the end, personally I don't object to people going on the pitch at the end of the season (last time I did it was Walsall), but you don't goad the away fans. That shows no class. Just like the knob that mooned the away fans. Funny maybe but I wish I has my old Enfield 303!

Can I make a plea for my standard "drop Smallbone" suggestion?

Thanks.

Can I humbly retract this please? He was fantastic. The goal especially...but excellent all round. Sorry.

I like Will but I think that he's better in a more advance role. I don't rate his tackling and he's not the sort to get "stuck in". What he is is a very controlled player, first touch is good, passing is good, positionally decent and he has goals in his locker. He's quite similar to JWP in a way, just without the set piece nous and he doesn't quite have the same engine. He's definitely Championship standard but, if we do go up, it would be interesting to see how he cuts it in the Prem now he's more experienced.

Yep, me and my 14 & 9 yo went on for 2 mins, took a couple of pics (nowhere near WBA fans) and left. I said to them about how their fans must be feeling on their long drive home, and mentioned Derby saying it wasn’t a nice feeling.

Not everyone who went on behaved in a despicable way. OTT comments on here generalising the situation.

Watching Will develop his game has been one of the highlights of the season. He's asked to do so many roles, and has improved in all of them, which has boosted his all round game too.

Last night was a prime example. Stephens likes to push forward then pass, taking Will's normal game out a bit. So Will is tasked with that more forward role, but still one where he does tons of link up play. When a previous manager put Will in an advanced role, it didn't work out at all. It's taken a lot of work, with Martin giving Will praise for having to pick up even more tasks, some of which weren't his biggest strengths.

In that role, he's now an outlet for shots outside the box, gets into the box for cut backs but still works back to set up attacks. As always, he's constantly moving to give the side shape. The areas he moves into, depending on the ask, has also got better. That got tweaked again last night in the absence of Adams. It took a little while, but I saw AA and Will picking up a couple of trademark Che drop backs.

Although he got in at least one good defensive tackle last night, that's not his game. It's hard to say if he covers the most distance. But only because we have AA in the side. But he must be up there across the league, even if it's not driving runs that Downes gives us.

The team needs Downes in it. When he's there, Will can then use his natural game. He looked very comfortable and key to how the side ticked last night. Good to see how well he gets on with the others and Martin too.

Great win but the job is not over, dirty Leeds up next.

Going to be step up from the Baggies but we definitely have the tools to get the job done and we know we can beat them. Their 2 defeats to us will definitely be playing on their minds.

IMO the biggest plus in these last few games has been McCarthy in goal. If defence has a GK they fully trust then they can play their own game better. Baz always had a clanger in him. Sets the rest of the team up.

Bring it on.

Nice to read posts like these.
When you have a home grown player “ getting better” in front of your eyes it’s one of the most satisfying experiences you can have as a Saints fan. Will’s goals and performances show he is “getting better” and he always seems like a sincere man in interviews. Jack Stephens is a heart on sleeve captain.

I’d rather play - and potentially lose - with a team of Will and Jack Stephens’s than recruit a bunch of Diego kickaballs next season - and probably still get beat.

Just a bit on McCarthy... I know he's on big money but to me his performances over the last few games have proved what a consummate professional he is. From being third choice basically just helping in the pre-match kickaround to being the anchor of the defence is a measure of the man.

No tantrums, no hissy fits, just getting on with it. Top man.

AA, Downes, Smallbone were out best 3 players IMO

Shouts to the CB paring also....no one was below 7 out of 10.

Smallbone my MoM, but any of the 3 above could have got it. Arma absolutely suits sitting wider instead of straight down the middle, his work rate is excellent.
