But we we're solid. They had a shot from a direct ball. Alex had a little fumble that came to nothing. We weakened with late subs and turned off for that final minute set piece. All that work on our passing game pays off as we controlled that game. Lots of running. Lots of awareness. Loads of plusses for everyone. Downes an absolute engine; Will in that more forward role making excellent runs and bringing others into the game, cracking goal; Aribo using his strength and while not always demanding it, does all good things when on it; tireless AA using striker instincts with mobility and tracking back too; Brooks a lot more involved linking up well and we should have got a pen; KWP class and a different level of player. THB and Bedders in that solid, unshoehorned partnership; Stephens had the odd pass go astray. But pitched in all over. Thought he was going to shoot late on; Alex in goal looks the better shot stopper, and we weren't troubled passing it out. We tried mixing the range up a bit tonight, which pins opponents back; Fraser put in a lot of work, allowing others to get into positions. Not a match where two similar teams try to get an edge. We controlled that one, and we're clear winners. This all night long

Any game can turn on whether the ball hits the inside of the post and goes in or the outside and is a soon-forgotten goal-kick. Or on whether a block is effective or creates the deflection that is unsaveable. So there can be no guarantees. BUT... we're definitely the better side. And I think there should be a surge of energy and conviction on Friday. I think we'll win 3-1. I just really hope their goal is a consolation, and not an opener. Not sure my nerves can take it. It will be utterly heartbreaking if we the gods are against us. But more likely, we're headed to Wembley, and continue what has been -- when all's said and done -- an exhilarating season. For once, one of my comments aged well...! Happiness is alive and well in New York City.... I might have to fly over for Wembley.
notnowcato
Russell smashed Carlos off the park tonight. Totally dominated, switched between 3 formations, snuffed out their midfield. Stephens was immense, sat in front of Jan and Bellisimo giving Flynn a bit more licence to drive forward. Switched to left back allowing Wee Man to push on. Brilliant game from Shoehorn.

Gloucester Saint
Great result, patient display first half and higher tempo after the break. Superb goals by Smallbone and Armstrong. Brooks very good, should have had a penalty and then one given when it wasn’t (Manning). Downes excellent. McCarthy has made a huge difference in goal, I think we will bring in a first choice keeper whatever the result at Wembley. Wonderful vibrant atmosphere, pity about the underclass baiting the travelling Baggies at the end. Shitty when Derby did in 2007 and 17 years on the armpit of our fanbase does it. Enjoy the win, get excited about Wembley but show some respect and class towards good fans and a good club (WBA).

S-Clarke
We were in control of that from minute 1 to minute 97. The first half was pure domination. WBA played for penalties, they played a low block and closed off all the space. We did go backwards and sideways a lot in that first half, but it was because WBA were so structured and rigid - it needed a mistake or a quick break to turn the tide. I couldn't really complain about the first half though as it was generally incredibly comfortable, we were under no threat at all. In the second half what we needed happened - a giveaway/mistake by WBA when they were in transition, it caught them out of shape and we pounced. Good run by Brooks, good movement by Smallbone and a good hit - I 'think' it took a deflection, it didn't look like a straight shot from where I was...may be wrong though. The game totally changed after that goal, WBA needed to remove their shackles and non-football approach and play a bit - which they did, but ultimately that played into our hands as space opened up, there were gaps in the middle and it was food and drink for us at that point. Downes drive forward into space for the 2nd goal was class, top finish by AA too. The penalty we were given looked iffy, but it doesn't matter because they one we weren't given was the most stonewaller you'll ever see - so we got the just rewards in the end. It was so nice to be enjoying 7 mins of added time knowing it was done, no stress, no panic, no nerves...just a time to take in what's happened and where we will be next Sunday. Note for the fans at the end - load of frigging bell ends. That was one of the best atmospheres I've ever been involved in pre, and during the game - but a bunch of utter knuckle dragging morons put a real dampener on the entire atmosphere with their antics at the end. The club will likely be fined heavily for that as well, personally we should put the bill on them. Edited May 17 by S-Clarke

Maybe I'm overly impressed as I'm not used to our keeper making saves but he unquestionably kept us in the game when it was still level across 140 minutes. McCarthy dealt with the crosses very well and stepped up when he needed to. He definitely provided a calmness at the back today. I think his influence was just as important for us.

SNSUN
Between watching the final stages at home and getting to work WBA scored and there was crowd trouble. Some of our fans really know how to be classless bell ends. Anyway let's take nothing away from the performance tonight, even in the first half despite being blunt up front we were the better team, we controlled possession, didn't panic and most importantly didn't have any brain farts. But that said, WBA didn't look up for it tonight at all. They were the opposite of the team we played at the Hawthorns a few days ago, they looked content to sit back and contain us and, while it worked in the first half, it was only a matter of time before we got through them. In the second half the Smallbone goal was crucial, as it opened the game up and meant that we could get our attacks through. I'm apprehensive about the Final, Leeds will be the favourites despite that fact we've had their number all season. But what a day it will be - I'm only sad I'll be sat here at work rather than soaking up the atmosphere! 90 minutes from the Premier League. The media will want Leeds back up there but we can stop it!

S-Clarke
1 minute ago, saintant said: You maybe need to check your phone or have your eyes checked 🙂 I can see why he'd have said that. First half it was just 90% us on the ball. Second half after we scored it opened up, WBA had more of it, pushed up higher and it wasn't as relentless possession wise as it was in the first half. Ultimately it worked because the space opened up and we caught them on transition twice.

There was never going to be a lap of honour tonight, they did that in the Stoke game. But i agree, the pitch invasion cringed the fuck out of me. Absolute tinpot, it's the sort of thing Plymouth Argyle or Rotherham would do if they reached a playoff final - but for us to do it I was pretty embarrassed.
