Martin’s comments about SArm, Che and AMc are quite telling.

Scotland teammate Che Adams and experienced goalkeeper Alex McCarthy are also on Saints deals that expire this summer.

Speaking after the match, Martin said: "I know that there will be offers for all of them and probably offers that will pay them more.

"Hopefully, the feeling they have and all that stuff will outweigh financial gain but maybe there'll be other things about it too.

"Whether that is location, club, how they feel about it - but we'll do our very best to try and keep all three."

That quote concerned me too, especially if we're planning to add Lallana and Ings to that mix.

It did raise my eyebrows at the time. They are 3 starters so it's not as though they are keeping fringe players around.

However, the bit about them all probably getting better paid deals, is key. SR will not be pushing the boat out. So if they get better deals then it's an amicable parting of the ways. The same will apply to Inga. He won't be back for a pay day, which suggests he won't be back here at all.

If we are being prudent and wise with wages, that would surely make the signing of Lallana on any sort of playing contract rather odd, as it clearly is unecessary and wouldn't benefit us in terms of weekly PL football performances.

So was Adam Armstrong. Guess he has little business in our side these days

I get your argument but one main difference is that Stu is 5 years older.

I made the point earlier that a key issue is whether RM has improved players or whether it is too that we have been playing at a lower level.

I think Stu was particularly poor in our relegation season, but if he can play at this seasons level than he good behaviour useful.

However, his fitness and work rate let us down previously and so, a year older, I would be concerned.

He has ability, and seems a positive popular player to have around, so could be a  useful squad player.

We need to be aiming for better in our first choice 11.

Don’t know if been mentioned in thread but wot about calvalho who was on loan at hull last season ?

would love to see him here if Stu Armstrong leaves ..

he’s young dynamic and very talented.. was Hull’s best player last season & if I recall motm at st Mary’s .. troubled us from the off and scored i think .. would be worth a loan with an option.

I'd offer him a short term deal to see if he can come back from injury and have an impact as Martin clearly likes him and he does add much needed experience, but truth be told, his days here are numbered.

Confirmed leaving

https://www.southamptonfc.com/en/news/article/mens-retained-list-published-for-2024

Having helped Saints return to the Premier League, Stuart Armstrong will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

The 32-year-old arrived on the south coast in 2018, making 214 appearances in six seasons at St Mary’s.

Scoring 25 goals in that time, the Scotland international featured 45 times in 2023/24 as promotion was secured via the play-offs.

The club would like to thank Stuart for his commitment and effort during his time as a Saint, and we wish him the very best in whatever comes next.

Long-serving goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and striker Ché Adams are also approaching the end of their contracts, with talks ongoing regarding potential new deals.

Outside of the current first-team squad, the club has also confirmed the following players on professional contracts will leave this summer:

Jake Vokins

Dynel Simeu

Matt Carson

Luke Pearce

We would like to express our thanks to each of those players and wish them well for their future.

One of my favourite players over the past few years, hope he gets a good move back to Scotland or that Fiorentina one I’ve seen mentioned.

Great player on his day, legs are on their way out but a great signing for £7m(?).

Gutted for him that his career here ended in injury, great servant and unplayable on his day. Great song too (for the few who don’t get flummoxed by more than 2 lines)

Sad end to his time here, but one of my favourite players in our 'less than stellar' period. He had an amazing spell under Ralph during the empty stadium games and start of the following season, he was at the peak of his powers and one of if not our best player. Didn't he hold a crazy record that we didn't win without him playing?

Sadly time caught up with him and injuries and a gradual slowdown has enormously impacted his game.

I have nothing but gratitude for all that Stu has given us during his time here, but I feel that this was a natural point to have a parting of ways and allow both sides to explore something new. I hope he gets a good move.

Been a decent player for us for a few years, wish him all the best with whatever he does next. Being pragmatic though, we’re going to need some much better, fitter players next season to avoid going straight back down.

Sad to hear, not the best player we've ever had but he was nothing less than commited. This season without his Indian summer we certainly wouldn't have won games we did, he was key to that unbeaten run especially that free kick. I did think we've miss him for the run in and play offs but thankfully Aribo stepped up and Will hit form. Another bit of good business from the Scottish Premiership.

From his point of view (injury aside) a great way to finish here. He probably expected to go last summer and instead was integral in winning a promotion and leaves on a high.

I hope he experiences playing abroad, when so many British players seem reluctant to.

Good signing, seemingly a popular guy within the club and good character - glad he leaves on good terms!

Shame to see him go, been one of my favourite players of the last few years always felt we were a much better team with him in it. Always seemed a decent guy too. In truth probably right for him and us to move on now though

Such a class player and a great servant to the club.  Certainly one of my favourites. Will miss Stuart's driving runs and quality on the ball 😥 he has played a massive part this season in getting us back to where we belong. The highlight for me was his free kick earlier in the season 😊 honestly thought a new contract for at least another year was in the pipeline. Wish him soo much luck for the future and at the Euros, he deserves it 😊

Think he wants/wanted to play abroad before calling it a day, and had at least one offer in Serie A last summer. Was one of the players who was reported as being talked into giving it another year to try and get the club back out of the Championship. Respect, Stu - hope he has a good Euros and gets the move he wants next

Disappointing but not entirely surprising as age (and of course his recent injury) weren’t on his side.

He’s certainly been one of my favourite players in recent years, at a time when there haven’t been many that we’ve been able to identify with. Haven’t read or heard anything negative about him in his time here.

Have enjoyed watching him play, and especially some of his “belters” ; my personal favourite v Coventry in the cup.

Good song too, although like Gabbiadini that might continue after he’s left.

Had hoped we might see him for another season, but not to be. Can only wish him well, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up in a DoF role somewhere in the future.

Really liked Stuart Armstrong on and off the park, a class act, intelligent footballer and always seemed to add balance when he played, terrific hair as well of course - a bit like Anders Svennson in that respect, but an upgrade. Looks like Fiorentina after the Euros, a well deserved pre-retirement gig and the rare opportunity for a Scotsman to get a bona fide sun tan! All the very best Stu!

What's our best hair XI? I'd start at the back with Gazzaniga. Lovren's probably in there, so are Stu, Anders and Pelle, obviously. Licka maybe....

If we’re having one of those then Ivan G is in there for me!!

Right time for club and player to move on. A good servant of the club leaving on the high of promotion having had a good season and will be remembered fondly.

Can apply the same statement to McCarthy and Adams who we should also be looking for better than this summer.

Consistently been a top performer at the club over the last 5 years, loved the way he drove forward in attack and made things happen. I hope he does well at his next club, wherever he ends up.

This. Although impacted post covid, he got back to being a starter in this squad. While others were learning to be flexible in Martin's system, Stu already had everything needed. He support others, could go on direct runs and was one of our technically best players.

Wishing him the best for his future. And wherever that future is, wishing it has a slight breeze ruffling that amazing hair.

For 70’s perms it would have to be KK.

80’s perms - Glenn Cockerill

80’s mullet - Mark Dennis

Sure their selection isn’t influenced by their other halves ?

He was one of the few real quality players in that era, didn't we have a long period when we only won when Stu Armstrong played? Probably right to move on but shame to see him go.

Not much to add to what's been said already. Really liked him as a player and he scored some great and important goals. Seemed like a really lovely bloke too.

He's a genuinely bright bloke as well, did a law degree in his own time, who knows we could see him next in the courts representing our Russ in the case of Swansea v Martin breach of contract

For lovers of curls, Eric Martin and, for the Brylcream lovers, Ron Reynolds.  And Kevin Keegan of course.

Late 80s Jimmy Case and early 90s Terry Hurlock forming a formidable and hirsute central midfield partnership in that side

Not sure I really appreciated how good he was until we went down. I don't know which game it was, but he came on and injected some much needed pace into the game, having the ability to control and pass at a level (and speed) far exceeding whoever he replaced. Not sure of the outcome of that game, but it showed me the difference between a Prem player and a championship player.  I am not sure he had a great season, but our midfield was pretty strong all season thanks to having players like him bolstering the squad.

During the Prem years he was an enigma. His work rate and lung busting runs were a tremendous asset, however his direct dribbling and attempts to break through the lines often led to the ball being lost and our defence being left exposed. His efforts meant he also tended to run out of steam and we never seemed to get better when he went off. In the right system he was great, although he certainly had his limitations.

Wish him all the best in has next endeavour. Hope we can get someone in better than him. Not sure that will be straight forward.
