I've lost track of the current situation, but are we actually looking to sign a striker - we just spent £15m on Archer - and if we are, does it have to be a loan?

I didn't think so, but our link to Yuri Alberto suggests otherwise - he is an out and out number 9.

Stuttgart have signed a CB, presumably means they are now totally out on ABK too

I wonder if there is any other interest in ABK? His PSV loan move came a bit out of the blue last time, so there is still a chance he will depart.

He can be annoying, yes, but you suggesting (or raising) that he's autistic was bang out of order and completely unnecessary.

How is simply raising a condition bang out of order? Unless you think that having autism is in some way bad which I assume you don't. If anything understanding context makes things easier to explain why posters are the way they are.

I think we were hoping for $$$$ this summer from him, but I reckon it'll be a last min free loan somewhere in Europe - just to get him out.

Yeah, think you may have misread my post.

MLG disappeared because the hate on here was pathetic, shallow and showed a complete lack of empathy - which is ironic.

It was people posting about how annoying they found his pedantry and suggesting he stops doing it. I fail to see how point out something obvious like that is either pathetic or shallow.

Most likely. I doubt we will let him go for something below 8 million and I'm not sure we would find a suitable buyer at this stage.

I think you need a bit of self reflection if you feel the need to ask that question, and despite what you now say was your intention, it didn't come across that way.

Anyways, I have no interest in bogging the thread down on the possible issues of a poster so feel free to have the last word.

Did you not watch him when he was with us ?   And you didn’t think he was composed or fast ?

I’m not too bothered about what happened since because he’s been at Chelsea which isn’t a easy team to break into

he’s still only a kid and the potential is super high

Er....he went to Fulham in Feb I think.

I don't care how you believed it came across to you. Given the lack of empathy you've shown others I don't need a lecture from someone like you given your prior disgusting language. Like you say better to pass by my comments if you're going to project onto what I said what you think I said rather than what I actually did.

Back to transfer talk please.

Hard (for us) to score with the ball.

The underlying theory of Russball is to reduce the time that the other side have the ball to score by holding the ball. Since that if we try to score we would end up losing the ball, we wouldn’t encourage our players to try to score.

Surely we should go in for him.....

He doesn't want to come back. Or at least didn't at the start of the window.

Move on from Ings.

Do we know why Ings "doesn't want to come back"? Is there an interview / article somewhere that explains his thinking? Maybe it was a reason that could change over time? Or maybe the reason was set in stone? Who knows....?

If they're terminating his contract you'd doubt he'd have many other options at that point.

And there’s the problem.

He'll stay or go, based on that single-mindedness. Unless it goes fundamentally wrong, he's pursuing a career around it (see Kompany last season?)

The theoretical pluses are that we know who to recruit for, as SR are aligned to it.
He does adapt within it, but within levels the scouting can look for.

SR can focus their resources along those lines. Having half an eye on how the likes of Man City use it, helps by parading pound signs across their eyes too.

There are positives in having a very versatile squad, and a system that changes based on opponents/ circumstances. It seems that SR are keen to focus on a certain style. An issue is that there have now been a few, and we have surplus to requirements players as a result. Some of their economies have been false ones.

I keep thinking of Nathan saying that now it was going to be his way. Or Ralph being demoralised with the changes that came into his system, with the resources he had.

I guess I'd prefer Martin's approach to rapidly changing managers or those not buying into changes. If it doesn't work, we're more likely to know why, and learn from it.

The deal is perhaps structured in a way our insurers like.

After Stewart they might be looking at the risks we take in signing players, hence the 20 games.

I’m surprised we can still get insurance on our players…..!

Getting Ings back strikes me as a bad move even for free (and probably on huge wages).

32 year old who scored 4 goals in 50 or so appearances for his last club who deem him surplus. Would he really recapture his form and score the goals we need? It seems doubtful.

Honestly, I couldn’t give less of a toss if we sign someone or not.

Quite simply, as a club we’re not in a position where we can spend £30-40m on a single player.

I’d rather the club were cautious in their approach then full scattergun pissing money up the wall.

Could it be argued that instead of spending £15-£20m on "average" players we'd be better off spending £30-£40 on half as many "very good" players...? (i.e. ye olde quantity vs quality debate). That's how I used to build my Fantasy Football team anyway.... ;)

If you’re expecting stupid money to be spent per player like Brighton, Villa, Forest, Bournemouth etc - you’re deluded

Stupid money?? It's the going rate for decent Premier League level players these days. No wonder as a club we are still paying the same fees we were paying for players 15 years ago with comments like that. We are never going to compete when we are shopping in that price range. Even fuckin Bournemouth have a bigger transfer record purchase than we do.

That's was addressed by RM today. We can't at the moment as it will damage the wage structure. But he also said it was a choice to do it this way. We will see come May whether this way was good enough. Even if it proves it wasn't it doesn't mean that buying 3 or 4 at 30m+ would of worked either. Ultimately it's the combination that matters.

this strategy arguably diminishes our potential return on investment which is crucial for us to be sustainable.

SR are focused on keeping the individual wages as low as possible. I think a 30-40m player, makes keeping within that difficult.

SR are also keen on the sell on. Others like Brighton have moved on to the level of buying in more expensive players destined for big things. I don't think we're going to be near that for a while.

So, that 15-20 level might be as far as we can go. And imagine that's after scouring for talent running down their contracts, or on frees that would also fit their plans.

I much prefer your fantasy football way though.

Taking that the full circle, play ten defenders and stick the ball into the back of the stand. Both equally stupid and unsuccessful unless the team is full of £100m players as per MC. Doing what we are doing playing keep ball in our own last third eventually hands an easy chance to the opposition and by present standards will relegate us. Cut out the crap and compete. The aim of the game is score goals not keep the ball. Doing what we are doing is neutering our goal scoring ability. If Martin is too frightened to play the game the way it was supposed to be played then just stop trying to con the supporters and leave. We were promoted not because his football did it, it didn't. Until he changed for the last league game at Leeds and cut out the possession from the goalkeeper we did just enough to get promoted. Now his plan, keep the shape and go back to the trash. It won't work.

I suspected that Ings didn't want to leave West Ham on their terms, and presumably foregoing bonuses and contract payouts, which might have been distinct from specifically not wanting to join Saints. West Ham were quick to leak Ings's stance / incalcitrant rejection of a move - I don't remember either Ings or Saints specifically said he'd rejected Saints. Presumably both parties are now waiting and hoping the other side cracks as the end of the window looms.

I got that but it pretty much sums up our performances especially evidenced by the possession chart and goal threat.

Yep, same... I've no recollection either of any reports of Ings explicitly declaring he "doesn't want to come back"...

Appreciate it was at the start of the window but can you remember where did you heard / read this @Dman ?

Fair enough. Looks like a yo-yo strategy to me. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing given how over-commercialised the PL is. Alternate seasons in the PL and Championship works for me :)

So what you’re saying is that unless we spend £30-40m on a single player, it’s not worth signing anyone?

And why are you so vehemently against the club spending lots of money “pissing it up the wall” in their transfer activity - were you expecting some of it to come your way…an inheritance maybe?🤔  Whatever, you seemingly do give a toss, which is fair enough. 😏

I suspect the reason lies with Saints wage structure more than anything else - his expectations do not match what we can offer currently and he knows it, assuming of course there ever was a genuine interest in bringing him back.

If West Ham are terminating Ings contract they will have to pay it off which in itself solves a problem as it takes care of what could be Ings reluctance to take a pay cut. Being a free agent he would then be able to earn even more from another club having trousered the remainder of his contract already.

To my mind, relegation is only "horrendous" if it's unexpected. Given we can't / won't adjust our wage structure so that we're competitive with the rest of the league (on that metric) then relegation is more likely than unlikley, I would venture, and thefore won't be a shock if/when it happens....

As an example, Fraser in the same position as Ings at Newcastle, wants to leave but won't leave without his contract being paid up and made a free agent. Newcastle not agreeing. He either has to stay and not play or take a financial hit.

Doesn't make much difference in match going fanbase. We averaged 29k+ last season in the Championship and will average 30k+ this season.
