Fulham sign

ESR from Arsenal for £35m

6 starts in all comps in the last 2 seasons

23 years old

Likely on a decent wedge

Talented as he may be, he’s unreliable in terms of fitness

Quote

Assuming he's fit, where does he play for Fulham? They already have Andreas as their attacking /creative midfielder

also

Fulham sign

EXCLUSIVE: Fulham agree deal to sign Ryan Sessegnon as free agent, here we go! After training with Crystal Palace for weeks, former Spurs LB will join Fulham. Agreement in place as Fulham beat competition from several PL clubs to sign Sessegnon.

he basically spent 76% (great stat) of his time at Spurs injured.

He’s played there before. He’s not quick enough in every sense of the word.

he was just a passenger the last time, but he's had two seasons in the championship since then. Also he has dropped back a little, as he played mostly in the attacking midfielder role when he came on as a sub in Prem games. So hopefully he will be able to hold his own.

I think it's fair to say that there are doubts about every single one of our players in the Prem. Even KWP was shite in the season went down.  Hopefully some/most of them can do a job as we can't replace them all this summer.

I appreciate Will may not currently seem impressive top EPL quality as an attacking midfielder because he’s never done it before at that level but he clearly has had an excellent championship season and developed a great understanding with fellow first team starters like Flynn, AA and THB. I’d find it incredible if he was not a starter v Newcastle and given the opportunity to show he is that EPL quality.

Writing “ one of our own” off before he’s even kicked a ball in the EPL is wind up stuff.

If ESR can put his fitness issues behind him that's an excellent signing for Fulham, he's a champions league player.  Big if though.

Smith Rowe wasn't injured at all last season.

Just saw some highlight is Lavia in a Chelsea shirt. Boy could we do with adding some of that kind of quality...throughout the side.

Just had a read to see if there Is any realistic option of us being able to loan Lavia for the season.

Chelsea played him for 32 minutes in one game in December during the whole of last season. Ankle injury and hamstring injury seem to have been the issues.

He is fit now, but unfortunately for us played a blinder in Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Wrexham yesterday. Bugger.

Flynn & Romeo together in a 4-2-3-1 would have been very nice to have 😔

It really isn't. It's fine margins as it is in any sport. A half-decent championship player, with the right support, coaching and team around him can easily become and be valued as a decent Premier League player. Sure, there might be gradients and certainly a ceiling for some players, but it's a fallacy that only the very best and most talented individuals make it to the top, luck plays a huge part as does support and development at the right time from the right quarters.

Carlton Palmer piping up about Saints again here. Stating that Jack Clarke should choose Ipswich over us as they are a ‘more attacking force than Southampton’ and the he ‘thinks they have a better chance to stay up than Southampton’.

As a former player, can’ anyone explain why his comments on Saints are always so negative? He openly said he wanted Leeds to win the playoff final over us and here he is backing a much less established side over a team he has played for. Did we treat him badly when he was here?

The Ipswich comments are strange, but he played over twice as many games for Leeds than he did for Saints so might have more affection for them.

I find it refreshing that he'll give his honest opinion and not be swayed by previous allegiances.  I also think he can go fuck himself.

Chelsea have brought so many players over the last few years. Here is a list of current players, not mentioning all tkhe youth talent they are stock piling.

LAVIA listed at 35mil. But another fire sale in a few years could see his price drop?

Some decent prices on some of them.

FFP has put pressure on all teams to balance their books,  clubs looking at big clearouts of over bloated squads. Wondering if we can take advantage late in the window when clubs and players start to panic? 🤞

Jeez…6 CF’s! How many have we got? A crocked player in Stewart and Onauchu who nobody wants? Something needs to be done this season to address this deficiency once and for all.

Absolutely it is ruthless.  Smallbone’s performances have merited him the opportunity to test himself on the top league.

If he’s not good enough, he won’t play.

As a former player, can’ anyone explain why his comments on Saints are always so negative? He openly said he wanted Leeds to win the playoff final over us and here he is backing a much less established side over a team he has played for. Did we treat him badly when he was here?

He’s a c**t.

I've just read the article and it's not really that bad.  He thinks both clubs would be a good place for Clarke and he thinks maybe Ipswich are a better attacking team and maybe stand a better chance of staying up.  Sounds like exactly what it is, which is ex-pro is asked for an opinion on something he doesn't really know or care much about.

Agreed. He's also a moron. Saints outperformed Ipswich as an attacking force last season, and equally Ipswich had a tremendous amount of luck to make the automatic spots in multiple games - not least vs us (twice) and Leicester.

Don't get me wrong, i think they'll make a fist of it next year as they've got a lot of momentum and financial flexibility, but saints will do just as well as them. At the end of the day, very little separated the top 4 sides last year - and our squad has a lot more depth and prem experience - two critical assets in the premier league.

In what way did "Saints outperform Ipswich as an attacking force last season"? How were Ipswich lucky to make the automatic spots yet got 9 points more than we did and we only made 4th place? 🙄

Perhaps this one is a little tame but he’s been a regular negative nanny when speaking about saints for some time. Guy clearly has beef for some reason.

I guess he doesn't show the usual ex-club bias towards us but who really cares?  I was more shocked at what the cast of Eldorado look like now.  I couldn't believe my eyes!

This analysis of BBD backs up the report of him before he went to Villarreal: he is not a typical goal-scoring CF but he excels on the ball and can certainly hit the back of the net.  I personally doubt, though, that we would sign him AND a CF.  BBD and AA would make an effective front two and BBD could possibly perform well enough as a lone target man.  Do we know how well he did at VR and how he was used there?

Statistical Analysis by EPL Index: Ben Brereton Díaz

Unpacking Brereton Díaz’s Performance Data

The comprehensive performance chart from Fbref for Ben Brereton Díaz over the last 365 days, aggregating 1593 minutes of play, offers intriguing insights into his abilities and areas of development. Central to this analysis is his performance relative to other forwards, with data encapsulated in a multifaceted radar chart that quantifies his attacking, possession, and defending metrics.

Attacking and Possession Prowess

Ben Brereton Díaz’s performance in attacking metrics demonstrates a mixed bag of outcomes. Notably, his non-penalty goals (npG) and expected assists (xA) lie in the middle range, indicating a solid, though not outstanding, contribution in terms of direct goal involvement. His 36th percentile ranking for non-penalty goals might raise questions, but this is balanced by his stronger involvement in creating shots, where he stands in the 54th percentile. This suggests that while not always the finisher, Díaz actively contributes to building offensive opportunities.

In terms of possession, Brereton Díaz shines in maintaining and distributing the ball. His passes attempted and pass completion percentage sit impressively in the 79th and 86th percentiles, respectively. These stats underscore his reliability and fluidity in the play, making him a pivotal figure in maintaining team dynamics and offensive pushes.

Defensive Contributions and Mobility

On the defensive front, the chart points to a less involved role, as expected from a forward. However, his ability to contribute when necessary is noted in his clearances and blocks, although these stats are relatively lower, highlighting his primary focus on offensive duties.

Brereton Díaz’s mobility is evidenced by his rankings in successful take-ons and progressive carries, placing him in the 78th and 76th percentiles respectively. This mobility is crucial, allowing him to manoeuvre through tight spaces and advance the ball effectively under pressure.

Overall, Ben Brereton Díaz’s performance stats from Fbref present a profile of a forward who is both a facilitator and a potential finisher, capable of impacting games beyond mere goal scoring. His ability to blend passing accuracy with effective ball progression makes him a valuable asset in the attacking schema of any team.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

The news of potentially signing Ben Brereton Díaz brings a surge of excitement. After witnessing Adam Armstrong’s rollercoaster performances in the Premier League, the prospect of pairing him with a player of Brereton Díaz’s calibre is thrilling.

Brereton Díaz’s stint at Sheffield United, though in a relegated side, showed his knack for finding the net under pressure. His adaptability across the front line could also provide Southampton with multiple tactical options, making the team less predictable and more dynamic.

Imagine the boost to the team’s morale and the signal it sends to our rivals. Bringing in a player with Premier League experience and proven versatility speaks volumes of their ambition to not just make up the numbers, but to leave a mark upon our return to top-flight football.

Lamine Camara is just what we need to beef-up our midfield.  €15-20m would be needed, though; can we afford him and BBD?  If so, certainly no other CF incoming, IMO.

Would be great but Guardiola been bigging him up recently so wouldn't be surprised to see him playing more for Man City

Do we think we’re trying for both Lamine Camara AND Matt O’Riley? Or might it be just one of them?

Those two plus Downes is a pretty strong middle 3, with Lallana, Smallbone and Aribo in support. I could see Alcaraz leaving in that scenario.

BBD, Ramsdale and Rak-Sakyi all appear to be loan targets.

I would be happy with those 5 to complete our business but would rather loan a CF than Rak-Sakyi due to limited loan slots.

Camara and O'Riley seem different skillsets to me. Camara no real history of goalscoring whereas thats what O'Riley should bring in theory.

Alcaraz will likely go IMO, Martin not overly positive about him in Adam Blackmore interview and if he couldn't get in our Championship team he won't get in the PL side.

He doesn't really seem suited to a Martin team, which is a shame as I like Charly - he's a bit of a maverick, luxury player you could say - the problem is that he gives the ball away loads.

I noticed that in the Bordeaux game as well, constantly giving it away. He's a moments sort of player rather than someone you can build a structure around and I'm not sure our style allows us to have 'luxury' players like him tbh. Sulemana is probably in the same mould.

We outperformed them on xG. Yet in the league, they're +14 on goals scored vs xG (which is the best in the league and far and away ahead of the other promotion sides). So much luck its unreal. Defensively they were beyond jammy as well. Take the last game against us, multiple clearances off the line where their players didn't even know where the ball was before blindly hacking it away, and scoring a winner from the worst touch/shot you'll ever see that afforded the player a tap in afterwards. That one game alone is a 6point swing. Nice story sure (if you turn a blind eye to their man city level spending for the 3rd tier), but jammy as hell to go with it.

I don't see him as an attacking midfielder. He's not a defensive/deep lying midfielder either. He's just a central midfielder, that we need to get up and down the pitch.

Got to agree with you though. I think he needs to be given a chance to show if the last two years and slight change of position has created a footballer able to hold his own in the top flight. Yes it's a dog eat dog world, but it's nice to gain some sort of affinity with members of the squad through them being here more than five minutes.

Interesting stats- and for the punters out there might explain ( and justify) why they are more favoured than us for instant relegation.

The Ugly Inside have a post suggesting we must be loan favourites for Aaron Ramsdale. Newcastle have 5 goalies including a fit again Pope and an aging Dubravka + Arsenal wouldn't want to strengthen a direct rival.

The is also a reasonably strong case that no other PL team is really in the market for a goalkeeper. Couple that with geographical proximity to his Bournemouth links and there might be something in the rumour. 🤞

no chance he's coming here then.
