All football transfers are a gamble and just like anyone who has ever had a flutter at the casino will tell you it’s wise to spread your bets.

£30M for MOR for US in this moment is too much of a gamble and I’m glad we’ve seemingly been a little more shrewd in our investment.

Despite all of our wishes we are one of the bookie’s favourites to go down. Better have one eye on the future than not.

Yeah, we needed to spread whatever money we had around a lot of positions this summer, while also securing Harwood-Bellis and Downes on permanent deals to have a chance of staying up. So far I think we're doing a good job. A goalkeeper and another attacker, while keeping KWP would make it a very good window.

Then, next summer if we stay up and all has gone well then we would only need 2-3 additions and then you'd like to see the £30m come out.

Wouldn’t have wanted us to spunk £30M on MOR.

From what I’ve seen of him (which is not a great deal) he ain’t worth it.
for that sort of money I’d at least want some kind of pedigree

too big a risk…..

I know it's not really sensible for us to spend that much on o'riley but it's still a bit of a blow that many of the more 'exciting' signings have gone elsewhere. Ramsdale would be a coup undeniably but I would still like us to get an exciting attacking signing to give me more confidence that we will score enough to stay in this division.

An interesting dilemma for Russell will be how to keep all these new signings on side, and not head down the path Ralph went, two years ago. He appears to have a great relationship with last season's squad, but there will be a dozen new faces who don't have that bond or loyalty, and who will want to be in the starting eleven, in most cases, in most weeks.

£30m is madness on what will be a punt. For every van Dijk there’s an Elyounoussi.

We bought Elyounoussi from Basel, not the SPL.  We've actually done very well out of most of our SPL signings.  Although I agree with the overall point that £30m seems too much for MoR

Come on you know the point being made. It’s not a direct parallel clearly but two examples of where we’ve invested decent money on players who have looked good in lesser leagues for clubs who also have the odd run out in Europe. One developed into arguably one of the world’s best players and the other underwhelmed massively despite his ‘work against the ball’.

All transfers are inevitably risks but this is exacerbated when a player has not played in the premier league or a ‘top’ league as you’re gambling on the player translating ability at a consistently higher level.

Fwiw I think MOR may do well and ultimately look good value but Brighton have the scope to risk him not doing so - in our current position we don’t at £30mil especially when there are more glaring squad issues to resolve.

I think the point being made was that Elyounoussi was very successful at Celtic but terrible here!  There are loads of examples of top SPL player being found out in the premier league Barry Fergusson being a prime example!

Current PSR status for each PL clubs. We have a £83m cap apparently which means we probably need to offload before paying more transfer fees.

We are probably looking at a couple of plans I'd imagine. Seems like that's the deal on the table for Bijlow with obligation to then buy.

Expand

Yeah looks likely the keeper will be a loan. Then we'll have to offload players and see if we have raised enough to buy another attacker or whether that'll have to be a loan as well.

Judging by past experience RM will integrate new signings gradually. He'll include them on the bench and give them some minutes until he feels they are ready. He does not normally throw new signings straight into the side. If we sign a goalkeeper that might be different but I doubt we'll see any new signings in today's starting line-up.

Going from RM's pre match press conference it sounds like Lesley needs to do a fair bit of learning where as Fernandes might be a bit more familiar with the style of play. RM did reference how important the number 6 role is so it would be more risky to throw Lesley into it early on (not that he'd start over Downes anyway unless RM wanted to go with two CDM's in certain games).

Certainly hope so he offers an attacking threat we don’t have many of those that’s why would have TP too.

But get we don’t want them injured before transfer

I think they’ve signed four players for in excess of £30m this summer. Credit how they’ve got there remembering they were at the Withdean when we played them in L1.

As HarvSFC refers to we can hope we increase our transfer levels over a season or so. But one things for sure we won’t if we continue to buy sacks of shit that we then struggle to offload (and break even on).

With us looking to eek out a limited budget it makes the £15m on Archer the more surprising.

Miovski went for £4.5m , at that level probably worth the risk. £15m on a player with Archer’s record is a greater risk.

Shame about Clarke, as that looked affordable.

Can't disagree. We've also put a heck of a lot of pressure on Fernandes. He better be something special to use that much of our budget on him. We'll be expecting a lot of assists and chances created.

The £ on Archer and Fernandes would probably have been enough for a deal on O’Riley if he was a main target.

Again, we put too much emphasis on buying potential, rather than the here and now. As you say, we can only hope Fernandes delivers quickly, a tall order for a young player in a new country.

But even if he creates chances we’re still lacking someone (with a record) to finish them.

Hard to know for sure but if we do go down and Ipswich stay up that would probably be a major criticism at the end of the year. I'm not entirely sold on our transfer business at the moment - accept we have another week.

Posted

An often overlooked element re O'Riley is that surely even if we had the cash he would have picked Brighton anyway?

Perhaps thats as much a reason as any why we moved on?

Regardless, just adding BBD and Archer in attack ic clearly not enough so lets wait and see and hope Alcaraz moves and perhaps someone is mad enough to drop 7 or 8m on ABK?

Why, due to a medical ?

I agree we need a new striker. While BBD might contribute around 10 goals, both Archer and Arma are still relatively unproven at this level. Arma deserves a chance, but I haven't seen anything that convinces me he can step up. My concern is that RM's tendency to favor certain players might end up costing us results. The decision to substitute Sugawara, a genuine attacking threat, while keeping Stephens on the pitch and playing him out of position, seemed more about player preference than sound tactics. Similarly, if Alcaraz doesn’t fit into RM’s system, I’m not sure who will effectively link the midfield to the attack—because Aribo certainly isn’t the answer.

I don’t think there’s such a thing as passing a medical. Physios / Doctors run the rule over the player and make a recommendation on fitness to the club. It’s the club that then decides whether to proceed or not.

Gary Lewin said this on a podcast - am sure it related to Marc Overmars.
