I take your points. Just wanted to highlight that we had 3 other midfielders.

That said I would love to see JWP return just so that the PL free kick record is achieved when he is wearing a Saints shirt

Going by something I read on the weekend seems that’s over the last season (and the Euros) JWP’esk free kick goals from outside the box are no longer in fashion.

Matt Targett on a season long loan - Graeme Bailey.  If true then KWP is probably off.

Sun reporting interest "hotting up" in Jack Clarke with us and West Ham interested.  Could see this happening.  Sunderland want 25M but have a reported 25% sell on to Spurs.  Fee would need to come way down but someone suggested yesterday offering Edozie on a loan which probably works for both parties.

also means we wont be signing Ramsdale as that'll be our same league loan quota used up

Apparently both Lesley and the Fernandes guy are good at putting through balls in behind the defence, its pretty clear that our strategy involves avoiding any sort of congestion in the box based on the profile of forwards we've signed, a lot of goals like the one that Adam Armstrong got against Leeds in the playoff finals. Its basically hedging their bets that teams are not going to play a low block against a promoted side so we either get the jump on them or cause an overload on the edge of the box if the opponent's defensive line has to rush back.

Expand

Personally, I think its why we should keep hold of TP (unless someone wants to offer us half decent money).

He offers us something different. If we come against a side who are going to sit deep (almost like Newcastle did after the sending off), with Suga's crossing ability from what I saw saturday, having TP in the box would be a right handful.

I genuinely couldn't think of a worse deal that this one, if it was to be true.

Even if KWP leaves, we don't need a bang average LB. We have Taylor & Manning already, we shouldn't be eating up a loan slot on Matt Targett.

Expand

Yeah, does beg the question why we bothered with Taylor if we bring another LB in.  Also puts the boot in on the idea that we'll be using the loan market for a high profile starter that can't get a game at big club.  Probably bollocks though.

agree with that. Might be handy to come on for 15 minutes if we're chasing a goal against a packed defence. If nothing else the size of him would occupy a couple of defenders.

Could see it happening if we go a goal down against a side like Everton, Leicester under Cooper or Forest, so I tend to agree with that sentiment somewhat but I still feel teams will try to give us the burnley treatment for the most part rather than sit back completely especially as fans don't enjoy watching their team sit back.

Losing kwp at this stage and replacing him with someone bang average will be a big blow and it would then be a fair argument to say that our defence is worse than last year.

No idea why anyone thinks we woukd get jwp back. We are literally just signing a box to box player. Not going to happen.

Matt Targett would be a very, very strange choice. In an area of the field we have already added someone this transfer window, and besides, Matt isn't up to much.

I see our areas of need as GK, MF and and perhaps another Forward.

100% this, Targett is probably ‘better’ than Taylor but just completely nullifies the Taylor signing and takes up a loan slot. We need a complete embargo on signing anything else other than putting all our resources into a GK, AM or better ST.

Oh I know, I was just saying that it's a bit harsh to judge that player (Keita) on stats like assists and killer passes when he's a defensive mid who's primary job is to put his foot in and break up attacks.

Anyway like you say I suspect that any rumours still going around of Saints being one of the clubs interested in Keita is based on previous interest, and probably isn't actually relevant anymore now we've signed Les.

Prowsey shouldn’t have left, but that £30m fee will have helped massively with the financial situation. He’s a PL quality player and I’d take him back without hesitation but not for anything like what we sold him for.

Feel with the moves we’ve made this window, the club won’t see a spot for him and I’d rather loan a decent keeper for this season than any other position.

I think this depends on the state of the finances. If there's enough to cover our primary needs (GK/AM) and some spare it wouldn't be a bad move in terms of future planning. Brining him in as an understudy to Les and Downes ahead of next year might be the thinking with him.

In a long line of strange decisions, signing another average left back would be up there, when there's about 3 or 4 other positions which need strengthening first. Taylor is good enough for us, and if we're playing a back 3 / 5, then if Larios gets back to fitness (good to see he played in the U21s!) then he'd be a good option as a pacy, technical player. Lets see, hopefully the Targett rumour is nothing.

It’s probably one of those aggregator Saints X accounts that have badged it up as news. Ignoring the fact that it references Brentford, Fulham and Forest as well, with no substance behind it whatsoever.

Shame we couldn't bring him on temporarily each time we get a free-kick in "JWP territory"... something we could import from Amercian Football maybe....?! :)

In all seriousness, his free-kicks can win games or salvage points. The lame free-kicks we had in good positions vs Newcastle being a case in point.

Some might say it's a bit of a luxury having a free-kick specialist in your side when he's "pretty average" at everything else... But given our usual 'goal-chances' vs 'goals-scored' ratio, I would say he offers a side like us much more than a team with clinical finishers...

Of course you'll have a chance to play, if you re-sign Mr Meghoma. You're practically on the pitch already. Just behind KWP, Manning, Taylor, Bree, Larios, Stephens, Targett and Fraser are on their way too. Oh, and Mrs Miggins, the tea lady is left footed. 🙂

This chart shows him being a bit of a Primeira Liga rockstar except for touches in the box, non-penalty goals and aerial duels. So for me he is probably more of a Lavia than a Bryan Robson. But I agree he is more of an 8 than 6. He would be Morgan, while Big Les plays the Big Vic role in a double pivot. But where does that leave Flynn?

That is great.

I saw his name mentioned in relation to Targett and the left back postes and as I was scrolling down the thread I was just wondering whether we might have to pay all of his wages to get someone to loan him (maybe that is happening here). If he and Charles can get 30 odd starts this season, we might see some improvement. Hope they both happen and they work out. It would be great if they emerged as genuine Prem players (I have my doubts) and that gamble on youth paid off (to some degree).

What about if we signed targett in addition to the other signings we needed? Someone like Fernandes looks to me like a decent signing but whether he's a good one for us or not will depend on who we get for the other positions that we need more

Possibly, but aren’t we already well stocked on the left hand side for FB, or WB ?

I’d have been content with Targett when his name was first mooted on here, but as things stand it’s not a position to prioritise with limited money and time.

(Seem to remember Targett was a good crosser of the ball. Not that we’d make use of that skill of course).

Wonder if City would consider selling McAtee? Could he be an MOR alternative?
