Mara leaving for that amount is absolutely incredible Business by the way. Given how short up we are for funds it's also a bit of a godsend - especially if ABK is delayed or cancelled.

All that happened quite quickly, when I left yesterday there was an unknown move for a CM, but now Mara is off, the Chelsea guy is the CM and we're buying Archer.

The Chelsea guy was very highly rated when they signed him, £23-30m they paid. One of those 'top prospect' French DM's at the time. Never got a game at Chelsea but that's to be expected. If he can get back to the level he was at France we'll be laughing, he's huge.

No idea what to make of Archer.

Expand

He got 13 games and spent a lot of the season injured so not sure that’s fair. One of their best players this pre season too so it’s classic Chelsea they are loaning him out.

Yep, far from it. We're weak all over the pitch in truth, but creating opportunities for whoever we have up top is vital.

Lesley - very shrewd signing. Good strong player who will protect the back four. Cameron - bit underwhelming but filing under ‘well I guess it COULD work’. Still very nervous about the dross we have in goal. Could be 4-0 or more tomorrow

So BBD is a unit if we decide to go long he has a great first touch and linked well with Taylor.

However if we continue to piss about with it in our box and McCarthy doesn’t look left as in Lazio game it doesn’t matter who is up top from goal kicks!

I doubt it. We can't keep a players cost on the balance sheet and release the deferral over the whole four years if we sell him after two, I would expect to release the balance when he's sold.

Expand

St Chalet is correct.... In his scenario the balance (Net Book Value) on the Balance Sheet would be £5m as in the previous two years we had written down £5m (£2.5m cost to the P&L each year) of the value.

So in this case when we sell for £10m we would recognise £5m of profit in year which helps with FFP or whatever it is now called.

Of course in real terms that doesn't mean we are £5m better off as we sold for what we bought the player for plus we would have paid 2 years of wages etc.

Right. She’s a northern lass called Lesley, saying to her mate, whose turn it is next, “you go, chuck”, whilst making a “w” sign with her arms and a “u” with the rope. Took me a while, but I got there (stupidly thought you meant Oliver Skipp for a while 🤦‍♂️).

may even feature tomorrow then?

I'd say rb, CB maybe, dm and possibly lb if kwp stays is good enough for 17th. Cameron Archer might be enough along with BBD in their positions but that still leaves gk, wingers and AM (possibly bednarek at CB too) which is basically half the team.

Hmm, not sure what to make of the Archer deal. Not the greatest time at Sheff U, but hard to judge many people in that team, they were just dire.

Did well at Boro and am sure I’ve read he had a decent pre season.

Hopefully not too pricey, thought this might have been a loan but sounds like it’s permanent. Good news is it still leaves a free loan slot, bad news is less money for an O’Riley type.

Hopefully a few minutes off the bench. Imagine featuring all preseason only to get dumped the afternoon before the season starts! Hopefully Archer replaces Maras place. Not sure about who lesley replaces on the bench.

It's a massive IF but if Ross Stewart is actually close to being match ready and stays fit then him and BBD can both play the target man role so we do have options there. RS is unproven at this level as well spending the last 18 months injured so it's a huge risk but in terms of numbers we are ok on paper. I feel we are missing a player with blistering pace and end product. Edozie had pace but lacks end product. Dibling and SAA probably have end product but are not going to stretch teams with their speed albeit both are very skillful so can get away from defenders to a certain degree. Attacking midfielder to compete with Aribo and Smallbone needed. Both Downes and Lesley U can play at #8 as well as #6 but not sure either have that extra dynamism to open up defences.

I honestly don't think you can count Stewart as an option in any scenario. It's best that he is just discounted and we plan around him in my opinion.

He hasn't had a pre-season in 2 years, still no nearer getting any game time, specialists from outside are in to try and help - it's all very damming for his future.

If Lesley is as good as his reputation then he probably should be starting ahead of Jack Stephens in any five man defence set up. Or indeed Shea.

At 6ft 3 he is a unit and going to be fine doing that and being a French u21 international he must be able to pass the ball.

Im happy we’ve added some obvious steel to our CMF.

Archer in Mara out seems straight swop almost publicised in sync.
The Chelsea DM in but no incoming publicised poses intriguing questions.

It is inconceivable to me that we have two top end DM’s as back up to Flynn. Thats one too many- OR  we are going to try play with two at same time - meaning the end ( or at least temporary abandonment) of the Jack Stephens front sweeper role.

For me, the longer it goes without a named outgoing ( Shea or Jack gets dropped)  the greater the likelihood that this aspect is part of a connected purchase or loan - the most public one being MOR.
Which, if any of those lives of thought we end up going for anyone’s guess. Indeed - knowing how highly Shea is rated, it may just be we may still just keep Shea and have extra cover in the DMF position. Probably not a bad move given we are likely to be having to defend a bit more than last year I’d imagine!

which is best though?

Expand

I'd  like to see Ugoghukwu pay alongside Downes to make our midfield stronger and more physical. We need maximum protection for the defence. The Chelsea lad looks very decent on the ball as well as his obvious ability to break up play. Don't see what we gain by playing one or the other. We need two good defensive dms and an attacking one.

Sad truth is we simply can’t compete for genuine PL quality strikers in this window. We don’t have the money or the reputation.

A gamble on a young up and coming player like Archer may backfire. But it’s also probably our best option in this crazy market.

a team of;

New GK

Stephens, THB, Bednerak

Sugawara Downes Lesley KWP / Taylor

Aribo / Smallbone

AA BBD / Archer

Looks a hell of a lot more solid, but also looks we'd struggle to score any more than 10 goals next season.

DT, There is not a keeper in the history of football you have said a good word about LOL. AM is not a world class keeper but he does save shots unlike our ball playing keeper who is injured. AM will come for the ball and that was important in games eg WBA  and Leeds. His command of the area took pressure off the defence and we did seem more solid. As for Ramsdale, dont forget he has been relegated twice when being the keeper

Put Ramsdale in goal, confirm KWP at LB and put an actual goalscoring midfielder in the Aribo/ Smallbone role and that XI actually looks like it might have a chance of staying out of the bottom 3

We are all agreeing on doubts over our ability to score goals, because we seemingly all doubt Adam Armstrong’s ability to score goals at this level. However, he was our top goalscorer, so I guess the hope from the club will be that he will be again, and BBD/Archer can add to his goals rather than replace them. If (a big if) Arma can hit 10/12 goals then the numbers BBD/Archer put up last season wouldn’t be far off being what’s required with us this season, although you’d hope BBD in particular could add to that given that he amassed them in only 14 games.

An interesting stay is that he hardly scored any last year with loads of games but he also had a pretty low xg. That means either he didn't get in very good positions or more likely Sheffield United failed to create any chances for him. We badly badly need some creativity as our next signing.

I saw Archer when he was appearing in League Cup games for Villa. He was a stand out in those games, and I thought it would be good to have a player like that here. 5 years later, he's still young and has a lot more experience under his belt. I've not seen his recent games, but really look forward to him doing well with us.

I think you will, I doubt Chelsea are loaning him to us so he can sit on the bench and study the further adventures of Captain Jack !

They will expect him to play, and so do I, seems very much in the Lavia mould just a tad older however.

You've started early this season Wade!

If Archer can actually finish and use both feet then he must surely be an upgrade on Adams. I found it frustrating that a professional football player could be so one footed, even in tap-in situations.
