I've noticed it seems very difficult to get awarded penalties in the Championship - it's almost as if referees act the same as in the Prem where they can rely on VAR - without it few penalties get given.

I think you're right. Especially when you have refs that are used to reffing in the PL where they know they have VAR as a backup, it's like they forget when they are reffing in games without VAR that it isn't there, and forget that they actually have to make decisions on their own.
