Superb news. Felt like he has looked a frustrated figure in the early parts of this season, but I'm no body language expert. Should keep him here for the season now with a number of reports earlier about a January bid for him.

Is there a downside here? Release clause, or something like that?

The only downside is for Charly as ihehere for another year 🤣

Seriously though how many of the squad have asked him to get Messi to sign a shirt for them, I think basically all of them.

The previous regime were absolutely dross at contracts.

Protecting our best assets is really important and for most signings you can tell in 6months if they are really going to contribute so when they do and will clearly attract interest then it makes sense to be proactive.

Good to see and I'm sure it strengthens our hand for the next couple of windows as far as he is concerned.

I wonder if he had a clause in his original contract that he'd get an extension if he had an international callup? Timing is quite suggestive

I don’t think clubs would saddle themselves with that kind of commitment off the back of a single international call up. I very much doubt the two are related.

seems odd, only signed very recently. Reckon this is to include clauses that ensure he can move with certain conditions.

With the timing I expect he had a clause in his original contract which triggered better terms if he got an international call up.

This is a very sound piece of business on the club's part, because regardless of any potential fee, we don't need to sell him.

Although Charly has lacked a bit of consistency so far this season, we all appreciate what he can do and a goal and few more good games

- and perhaps even a 10 minute sub. appearance for Argentina - will sky rocket his value and the likes of Brentford won't get a look in.

I'm sure we would all like to think that he loves us so much that he is happy to stay, but he has better quality than playing in the Championship

and the lure of Prem. or even a top Euro salary may prove too difficult to resist in a year or so,  if we are still wallowing around in this league.

IF - he were to move on - then the level of fees we got for LIvramento and Lavia may point the way ahead and we could dictate the fee ourselves

to those " big money " clubs who can seemingly spend money like water.   This new deal is a win-win for Charly ..and the club.

Only just seen this. Gobsmacked in a good way. One of a few genuine Premiership level players we have in the squad signs a new long term contract. Whether it's to shore up and protect an asset, I don't care. I think it is just great news for Saints, the player and the fans. He'll get a great reception today. A real feel good piece of news. Hope he has a blinder today.

Think I head about 4 different songs for him yesterday, the "Morgan Schneiderlin" tune of Charley Alcaraz la, la la la la " sounded easiest to remember.

Back of the Chapel one was catchy as well but didn't quite get the tune.

Did he feature at all for Argentina?

I noticed Saints harvesting the social media content last week with pics of Alcaraz with Messi, good publicity but made our Charly look like he was there as a prize winner.

Anyone else think it was great that Charlie had the self-confidence and audacity to try something different with his penalty kick today? I suspect he'd have gone for something more orthodox had the game been closer, but given we were coasting to victory there was nothing to lose IMO. Always good to see a bit of individuality and flair.  (Of course, I'd have been livid if he'd tried it if the result had been more in the balance!).

Absolutely no.

Self-indulgent.

That's basically what Jo Tessem said on going home with Adam and Joe that it's good to have players who can do something different. Not the right choice here clearly but he has a bit of magic that can be handy if channeled in the right way.

I admit I laughed purely how shit it was and how much shit he will get.  Fortunately he wont get a pen anytime soon so he will learn a lot from that miss.

Keep him away from penalties. A penalty taker should be someone who can thump the ball and find the corners. Those who try the fancy stuff will always miss plenty. Our best spot kickers have been the likes of Le Tiss, Lambert, Dodds and Peach - don't recall seeing any of them try to be clever, just pick a spot and give the ball a hefty whack.

Yes. Shame about the execution but he fooled the keeper. No different to sending the keeper the wrong way and sticking it past the opposite post but it was a shite pen that just happened to be a Panenka.

Loved how Charly expressed his apologies for the penalty f**k up after his goal. A feeling of making amends, self awareness and humility. Admirable traits and provide hopefully an insight into his own work ethic. He is blowing hot and cold at the moment but he definitely fits the Guly-esque cult hero role.

No. Think it was plain stupid, as I do whenever anyone tries something daft like this.

Penenka’s and stuttering run ups should be an immediate fine.

Amazing how some even experienced players resort to this bollocks. Remember Pelle a few years ago in the Euros.

So neither you nor Alcaraz  considered it remotely possible that we could concede twice in about 8 minutes of remaining (injury time)play

That could have been costly.

Sorry if that seems extreme but Middlesborough at home (Dec 2004) in our relegation season haunts me still (2-0 up on 89 minutes ….). Charly possibly not even born then so will forgive him not having that in his mind ..

Exactly. It looks stupid when it goes wrong but a player can just as easily miss a conventional penalty. Fair play to him for expressing himself and trying something

Nope. I thought it was idiotic, immature and cocky.
Missing from twelve yards as an attacking player is criminal.

Would you be saying the same if someone like Aribo or Mara stepped up and did it?

I didn't like it at all
