Steven Davis announces retirement

Brilliant player but the most bizarre "underrated" tag ever. Never seen a player branded with that so unjustly.

- Fans loved him

- Commentators and pundits always talked about how key he was in the game whenever we won

- Press linked him with Liverpool and Chelsea at one point

- Managers pretty much had him start every game available

Who on Earth were these people who didn't rate him? Always thought that was such a weird tag.

There was quite a prolific poster on here who hated him, ripped him apart after every game. Can't think of his name now.

One of those players who was a solid 7/10 every week.

He scored a few of my favourite goals. The brace away at Spurs, the goal at Man City in our first game back in the PL and the opener against Chelsea when we won there 3-1.

Single handedly the best value for money signing we made after Lambert.

Phenomenal servant for the club. Class act. Wish him well. Can see him getting into Management and having a good crack at it.

Tauro hits the nail on the head. Easily the best value for money signing in the Prem.

Incredibly under appreciated by those outside of Southampton. For some reason, the away game versus Spurs will always remind me of Davo.

Wish him nothing but the very best with whatever he does. Punditry or management I reckon.

He always went under the radar with some fans, because he wasn't the most exciting or the most prolific, but that was his job in the middle. He was an easy scapegoat for the fans who mouths dominate their brains, but he didn't get the nickname '8/10 Davis' for no reason; he always delivered an 8/10 performance. Terrific player.

Verlaine.   Outside of his set against SD, he's quite a good poster.

Brilliant player, key cog in a couple of the best sides we've had in a couple of decades. The same can be applied for his country as well.

No thrills but 7/10 every single game without fail.

He and his family still live in the area (his family have never left), would love the club to bring him back in some capacity, if he fancies it. His experience and professional attitude could do wonders for the U-21's or the current first team!

Great player and a fantastic signing. The sort of player every team needs but not every teams fans appreciate. He’s had a great career wish him all the best

Always thought of him as this generation's Jimmy Case, came in with bags of experience and talent but was never a "star". Comfortably pound for pound the best signing we have made in recent times though and made the team tick in a brilliant but understated way.

Was always surprised he was never made the captain as he was exactly the sort of player you'd expect to be captain. Also on the times i met him he came across as a just a genuinely good, and very level headed, bloke.

He's had a good journeyman pro career. I just thought he was a bit dull and predictable on the ball, often not quite as committed defensively as his work-rate boosters would have you believe, and wildly over-praised on here. Hope he enjoys his retirement.
