That's 5 loans we have, and I believe we can only have 5 in a match day squad, so this may affect moves for Brooks et al.

We can get more loan players in of course, but at least 1 wouldn't be able to be picked.  Guess Holgate may make way in that case?

Wonder if this means Holgate will indeed return to Everton and Shea Charles will act as 4th CB cover if required ?

Barring injury there is no way THB, Downes or Fraser arent in the match day squad. If Rothwell comes in and another loan that'll be the 5.

Purely speculating, of course, but maybe Downes' underlying health issue is more problematic than first thought and thus we need an experienced player to step into Downes' boots whenever he's unable to play? #thinkingoutloud

(No idea if he's a similar player to Downes though)

Or… are we making Frasers deal permanent…?

Strange one. Someone must be off. Stu being cashed in on before he leaves for nothing? Downes being recalled? Charles going out on loan?

No disrespect to Shea but he's young and inexperienced at CB. Going in to the latter part of the season with only 3 specialist CBs (one who has just returned from a long injury) would worry me. Additionally we have our back up RB Bree playing LB (when he's not injured) so Holgate provides us with a back up RB option. Personally I hope he stays.

It does make another loan player tricky though - maybe we can sign Brooks on a permanent?

I'd be surprised if we're selling Stu.  He's over 30 and less than 6 months on his contract so unlikely to get much money for him.  We're better off keeping him and letting him go for nothing imo given how class he's been this season.

I guess if he's pushing to leave it makes sense.

Zero chance. He cost big money for this level.

It's probably competition for Stu.

I know but he isn't the finished package and surely he'll be better off starting every week than coming off the bench for 10 minutes every game? Clearly a brilliant talent so if he can play more games, it'll only bode well for us.

How about this hair-brained theory?

SFC to AFCB: can we have Brooks on loan please?

AFCB: yes, but only if we can have Stu Armstrong in return

SFC: ok, but we'll need someone else to replace Stu. Got anyone who might fit the bill?

AFCB: how about Joe Rothwell?

SFC: ok, deal

(Yeah, I know, load of old tosh from Trousers as per usual)

I have a mate involved at Blackburn, so sent him a text earlier for his opinion

Loved watching Joe for us. An amazing dribbler and possibly quicker with the ball than without it. Very exciting player and big mates with Arma, so no surprise with this move. You'll really enjoy watching him play.

Interesting one, another that's came from nowhere. Don't know too much about him, but think he was part of the exciting Blackburn team when they wouldn't draw matches. I guess we could and my preference would be to upgrade on Smallbone in the centre of the pitch, rather than an S. Armstrong, or Downes fill in. But I thought we'd look to replace Smallbone in the Premier League, as he does a job in this league.

Aside from Stewart, due to injury we didn't do too badly with recruitment in the summer. Manning's looked good in recent games and Holgate was always signed to be a backup, so I suppose we trust the process.

Sounds like he could be our Steve De Ridder for the promotion push.

Wonder if Rothwell coming here also persuades Brooks further.

He'll have a mate here for his potential time at the club.

They’re coming from Bournemouth not Brazil, Ecuador or Latvia so won’t need to uproot or face a cultural change*.

Hardly a move where a player will need a mate to settle.

* less blue rinses in the population of Southampton though.

He’s not similar to Downes, far more attacking.

Stu maybe off. I did post elsewhere that he is still on Premier league wages which is an issue for the club.

Expand

But we’ve only got to pay premiership wages for a few months, by which time his contract would have ended or we could be back in the Premier League anyway.

Stu is important to our chances of promotion so it would be madness to offload him on that basis.

or he is just another player...Martin makes the point (a few times) that although we have a strong squad, it is small

Far more attacking than Downes means he shoots to be fair.

His shooting stats for the last couple of seasons are actually slightly worse than Downes' stats so far for this season, albeit in different divisions of course. When he was last in the championship, his shooting stats were indeed far superior to Downes. I guess that means that Bournemouth have used him in a completely different role to the way Blackburn did.

Flynn Downes this season so far at Saints:
