SaintsFan86 Posted 14 January, 2024 Author Posted 14 January, 2024 Joe's a CM, who can also play DM. Seems a very strange loan deal, always good to add depth too.
Colinjb Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Defensive midfield cover it seems. Never heard of him either.
Convict Colony Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 seems to have wheels - a bit of pace in midfield
revolution saint Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Seems like a decent player from the video although it's not a position we lack for in numbers. Decent skill on the ball and at times looks like a fat Lallana.
Matty's Caddy Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Doesn’t look very defensive 😂. Looks like a younger Stuart Armstrong with less goal threat, but what do I know? 2
Barsiem Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 That's 5 loans we have, and I believe we can only have 5 in a match day squad, so this may affect moves for Brooks et al. We can get more loan players in of course, but at least 1 wouldn't be able to be picked. Guess Holgate may make way in that case? 1

SaintsFan86 Posted 14 January, 2024 Author Posted 14 January, 2024 Wonder if Rothwell coming here also persuades Brooks further. He'll have a mate here for his potential time at the club. 1

Wonder if this means Holgate will indeed return to Everton and Shea Charles will act as 4th CB cover if required ? Barring injury there is no way THB, Downes or Fraser arent in the match day squad. If Rothwell comes in and another loan that'll be the 5. Edited 14 January, 2024 by beatlesaint
hypochondriac Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Just had a look on the Blackburn forum. A few of them putting him in their best 11 since 2012 noting his skill and pace. Said he played on the right before moving more central.
trousers Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 (edited) Purely speculating, of course, but maybe Downes' underlying health issue is more problematic than first thought and thus we need an experienced player to step into Downes' boots whenever he's unable to play? #thinkingoutloud (No idea if he's a similar player to Downes though) Edited 14 January, 2024 by trousers 1
Long Shot Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Not impressed with him at all. I hope this is bogus info. Much prefer Brooks

Lighthouse Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 I guess it’s possible Stu is off, given his contract situation. Seems somewhat unnecessary if not, with our wage bill already being so high.
Bad Wolf Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 (edited) Strange one. Someone must be off. Stu being cashed in on before he leaves for nothing? Downes being recalled? Charles going out on loan? Edited 14 January, 2024 by Bad Wolf 2
Markyruk Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Must be cover for someone leaving, but who is it? From the looks at his “show reel” on You Tube my guess would be Stu.

No disrespect to Shea but he's young and inexperienced at CB. Going in to the latter part of the season with only 3 specialist CBs (one who has just returned from a long injury) would worry me. Additionally we have our back up RB Bree playing LB (when he's not injured) so Holgate provides us with a back up RB option. Personally I hope he stays. It does make another loan player tricky though - maybe we can sign Brooks on a permanent? 1
Toussaint Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Stu maybe off. I did post elsewhere that he is still on Premier league wages which is an issue for the club.
Barsiem Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 I'd be surprised if we're selling Stu. He's over 30 and less than 6 months on his contract so unlikely to get much money for him. We're better off keeping him and letting him go for nothing imo given how class he's been this season. I guess if he's pushing to leave it makes sense.

I know but he isn't the finished package and surely he'll be better off starting every week than coming off the bench for 10 minutes every game? Clearly a brilliant talent so if he can play more games, it'll only bode well for us.
hypochondriac Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Worth a read. Certainly changes opinions from the start of the thread to the end. https://www.brfcs.com/forums/topic/34579-joe-rothwell-a-myth-or-a-prospect/page/5/#comments
ErwinK1961 Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Maybe Charlie is off, someone willing to offer sizeable cash and he doesn’t really play much anymore?
hypochondriac Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Sounds like he linked up well with Armstrong too.
trousers Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 (edited) How about this hair-brained theory? SFC to AFCB: can we have Brooks on loan please? AFCB: yes, but only if we can have Stu Armstrong in return SFC: ok, but we'll need someone else to replace Stu. Got anyone who might fit the bill? AFCB: how about Joe Rothwell? SFC: ok, deal (Yeah, I know, load of old tosh from Trousers as per usual) Edited 14 January, 2024 by trousers 3
CSA96 Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 I have a mate involved at Blackburn, so sent him a text earlier for his opinion Loved watching Joe for us. An amazing dribbler and possibly quicker with the ball than without it. Very exciting player and big mates with Arma, so no surprise with this move. You'll really enjoy watching him play. 11
HarvSFC Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Interesting one, another that's came from nowhere. Don't know too much about him, but think he was part of the exciting Blackburn team when they wouldn't draw matches. I guess we could and my preference would be to upgrade on Smallbone in the centre of the pitch, rather than an S. Armstrong, or Downes fill in. But I thought we'd look to replace Smallbone in the Premier League, as he does a job in this league. Aside from Stewart, due to injury we didn't do too badly with recruitment in the summer. Manning's looked good in recent games and Holgate was always signed to be a backup, so I suppose we trust the process.
Wade Garrett Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Looks pretty decent. Wouldn’t want to lose Stu though. 1

Badger Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Noticed he was an unused sub in their cup game at QPR. Presume he’s not cup tied having not made it onto the pitch.

Hardly a move where a player will need a mate to settle. * less blue rinses in the population of Southampton though. 1

His shooting stats for the last couple of seasons are actually slightly worse than Downes' stats so far for this season, albeit in different divisions of course. When he was last in the championship, his shooting stats were indeed far superior to Downes. I guess that means that Bournemouth have used him in a completely different role to the way Blackburn did.
