VectisSaint Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 Just found out the sad news that Mel Blyth has passed away. Great player for us and of course part of the 'Class of 76'. RIP Mel. 1 14
Winnersaint Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 I saw this on other social media yesterday evening. RIP Mel, reunited with Bobby.
Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 Upset by that. RIP Mel, you're a Saints legend, part of the only Saints team to actually win a first class trophy. I believe Mel sold his FA cup winning medal a few years back to raise some money for his kids.
Holmes_and_Watson Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 Our thought are with his family and friends at such a sad time. It still comes as a shock thinking of another of the '76 team have gone, even if it was now such a long time ago.
Miltonaggro Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 Mel Blyth, class act and one of McMenemy’s first thirtysomething ‘leader’ signings. Cost us just £60k and player of the season in his debut season. Great paired with Jimmy Steele. RIP Mel. 5
Andrew Watson Posted 13 January, 2024 Posted 13 January, 2024 Mel Blyth was a very cultured and classy defender. RIP Mel. 1
Badger Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 Sad news but a reminder that time moves on for us all. Mel is one of Lawrie’s immortals etched into Saints history from 1976. RIP

After relegation in 1974 we were expected to bounce back with Channon and Osgood leading the charge, but looked defensively frail in the early weeks at times. In September Lawrie signed Mel Blyth and the defence started to improve. In hindsight he was the first signing to transform us from a relegated team to Cup Winners. I’ve got a nagging recollection that he signed the day we played and beat Pompey 2-1 at The Dell ( recall picture of him signing that morning appearing in the Sports Echo). Perhaps Fitzhugh will confirm or correct me if not the case. If it was that day then timing couldn’t have been better as Jim Steele was sent off and suspended for a couple of games. 1
Morse Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 The entire cup winning side of '76 were like gods to me growing up. To lose another is so sad. RIP Mel 3
BARCELONASAINT Posted 14 January, 2024 Posted 14 January, 2024 The 76 side are and will always be heroes in any Saints fans eyes that were young enough to witness that incredible day in May 1976 when the much fancied Man United were humbled by Division 2 Saints. I was only 11 years old at the time but my god i can remember that day and the next day waiting for my heroes outside the Saints pub in Millbrook like they were only yesterday. RIP Mel and thank you for making a kids dream come true. 4
