S-Clarke Posted 1 January, 2024 Posted 1 January, 2024 Walsall just destroyed last season's giant killers, Grimbsy, 6-1 at their place. Not one to take lightly! 7

We saw with the West Ham cup game just how breaking winning momentum can have long term effects. We have seen many times also, just how after an international break we are sluggish. It is not like an extra game. It is in place of a normal Saturday game. Play your strongest tea, replace loads after an hour if we are 3 or 4 up. This game worries me, because if we struggle with a totally second string team, I truly believe we will lose momentum. I know we are not going to win the cup, but we should treat this as another league game and keep the confidence high. 5
The Cat Posted 2 January, 2024 Posted 2 January, 2024 I'm sure there will be a reasonable number of the first team squad involved.ย Stephens will play as he doesn't need a rest. Same for Fraser, Smallbone and Alcaraz. Adams and Mara up front too.ย

We shouldn't be throwing away our unbeaten record by just slinging in every reserve and teenager we can think of. If nothing else it doesn't really give young players the best chance to shine if the whole team are reserves/kids. I'm sure there would be some changes but we don't play again for a week so I don't get why we need to "rest" huge numbers of front line players. 3

Sheaf Saint Posted 2 January, 2024 Posted 2 January, 2024 I've never understood why almost everyone advocates playing our backup keeper in these kind of games. Why? The keeper is the one player who doesn't need resting/rotating and I would much rather let Baz continue to build confidence.ย If we want to rest players but still put out a team likely to win so we can keep our momentum going, it seems like an absolute no-brainer to stick with our first choice goalie.ย 5

I guess the flip side of the coin is that there's a case for giving the 2nd keeper game time in a match that isn't 'mission critical' so that if/when he's called upon during the league campaign then he at least has some experience of playing with the first team rather than coming in completely 'cold'. Dusic Posted 2 January, 2024 Posted 2 January, 2024 (edited) IMO, and obviously if fit: -------------Lumley------------ Abu--Stephens--Holgate/Awe---Meghoma -----------Charles-------------- ----Smallbone-----Alcaraz----- Sam Amo--------------Dibling --------------Mara----------- Back four have played so many minutes there is zero point involving them and if Dibling doesnt play at home to Walsall when will he? He's still developing so any additional game time is a positive. His distribution is such an important aspect of how we play, so keeping him in with whatever other changes we make outfield will maintain some stability. Bringing in a completely untested keeper just for the sake of it, along with wholesale changes to our outfield players, is just going to cause more unnecessary disruption IMO.ย Edited 2 January, 2024 by Sheaf Saint 1

In 1921/22 we followed the unbeaten run in the league with a win in the FA Cup (3-1 v South Shields) but then lost our next league match (Brentford 0-1). So Walsall makes no difference to our unbeaten league run record. But as you say it would be a shame to mess the run up now. I'm sure we can put a team out that can take care of Walsall, and it's not like we have another game soon after so plenty of rest and recovery time. Kenilworthy Posted 3 January, 2024 Posted 3 January, 2024 I really want us to get through this tie. Weston Super Saint Posted 3 January, 2024 Posted 3 January, 2024 I have a nasty feeling this might be our banana skin.
